  1. They're $585 a piece. That's how
  2. I seem to be seeing a lot of people picking them to lose in the finals. The analysts love the Eastern Conference (more Canadian teams?) and they love the Pens. Evidently Crosby will play either in the 2nd round or sometime in round one- right after their first loss of the series. Good news for Hawks fans: Barry Melrose picked the Pens so that kiss of death has been avoided. I think it works in the Hawks favor to have a little bit of a chip on their shoulder so I don't mind anyone picking against them.
  3. Why hockey? I don't follow the sport so I'm actually curious. Because hockey is awesome, that's why. The NHL just announced a partnership with an advocacy campaign called "You can play" which is aimed at tolerance of openly gay athletes. Duncan Keith of the Blackhawks among others have made ads for this campaign. I'm a little surprised that even hockey fans here hadn't heard of this before. When they made the announcement, someone (forget who, IIRC he was the son of a former coach) was counselling 4 current NHL players in hopes that they would all come out publicly at the same time to take pressure off any one of them being the first. http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2013/04/11/nhl_announces_lgbt_rights_partnership_with_you_can_play_to_support_gay_athletes.html
  4. I'll be interested to see if they can actually lure any free agents here. Has the perception of the team changed among the players? If they offered Malkin a contract like the one Parise got, he'd have to at least think about it. I hope Lumbus wins the draft lottery too.
  5. The East is pretty wide open. You could make a case for 5 of the 8 teams making the finals. The Pens: The obvious choice as #1 seed The Bruins: Lot's of talent, good goal tender and brutal physical team The Rangers: Great goalie and talented players that are just lately starting to turn it up The Senators: They'd have the Vezina trophy winner if hwe hadn't gotten hurt. They don't allow many goals and have gotten key players back. They could be primed for a Kings like run. The Caps: Ovechkin alone makes them dangerous. They got hot at the right time. The Leafs, Habs and Isles could all win their 1st round series which really makes it hard to predict.
  6. Detroit isn't in yet. Puck Daddy lied to me. I guess if the Wings lose in reg and the BJs win they would be out. The Wings have the better ROW so all they need is 1 point from the Stars. Since I'm a fan of chaos with regards to team I don't care about, go Oilers. It would be hilarious if the Wild missed the playoffs
  7. Detroit's in and now Lumbus' playoff fate is in the hands of the Oil, who have to beat The Wild for them to have any chance.
  8. According to legend, there are perhaps hundreds of women that can make that claim. So what?
  9. Welcome to the wonderful world of hating the Red Wings.
  10. It's not even newsworthy. Who cares. They spent a surprising amount of time talking about it on NHL Radio this morning and I keep seeing references to it on Twitter. I think it's just whiny Vancouver folks trying to keep it going. After they lose their series to the Blues no one will care because they will be too busy covering the riot.
  11. I think Dallas might still be alive (barely) because they play both Columbus and Detroit in their remaining games. Detroit is in the drivers seat though because they have a game in hand on Lumbus True and Dallas has more ROWs (20) than Detroit (19) and Columbus (17). If they won the last 2 games in regulation they'd have to hope CLB only gets 1 point or less in their last game and Detroit would only get 2 points or less in their other 2 games. Probably not going to happen but its more likely than I originally thought. The road to the playoffs goes through Nashville who play both Detroit and Lumbus this week. Poor Stars.
  12. I think Dallas might still be alive (barely) because they play both Columbus and Detroit in their remaining games. Detroit is in the drivers seat though because they have a game in hand on Lumbus
  13. That (Kane) talk has pretty well dried up lately though.
  14. Jets-Caps for me. Great game so far. Ladd's been on fire lately.
  15. I saw some Hart rankings article the other day and they had Toews 5th...there was another one (B-R though) that had him 1st, but I don't think there's enough buzz out there for him to win it. i would disagree about the no buzz thing. crosby is obviously the leader, but it's not like toews is some unknown schmo having a career year. yzerman never won the hart, i think that toews could win based upon the idea that he's the spiritual successor to one of the greatest ever who was robbed of the most prestigious award. I think the fact that he's at least 50-50 to win the Selke is what hurts his chances of winning the Hart. Just like Ovie won't get the Hart because he's going to win the Rocket Richard.
  16. Detroit more or less eliminated Phoenix with that win. Riotville clinches their division with their win. Stars vs. Sharks is the game of the night.
  17. In 2010, the Hawks lost 3 of their last 5 going into the playoffs.
  18. It's probably best not to watch these last 3 games if you think that they will be indicative of how things will go in the playoffs or what they mean which is absolutely nothing. Nobody outside of Vancouver cares about the Presidents trophy. Let the Pens have it if that's what happens. The Hawks are the best road team in hockey when they care about the outcome.
  19. Yeah, apparently Emery practiced but don't know if he's ready. And if you aren't going to start Hutton at home against Phoenix, you sure as hell aren't starting him at Vancouver. The boys might play better in front of a rookie now that they don't have any other reason to play hard. Regardless, I'm sure Q wants Crawford to play himself into or out of the starting job going into the playoffs.
  20. I thought somebody did one and determined that it was no more than 3 wins difference but I can't remember who or where that was. IIRC, I think they took actual wins compared to the sum of individual player WARP plus whatever they determined was the baseline for an all replacement level team which I'd assume was somewhere around 54. edit: after trying that formula, the 2012 Cubs had a net WARP of 13.9, so they should have won 67.9 games last year. That would make Svuem a -6.9. Maybe someone else remembers better or would like to apply this to other teams as a comparison.
  21. This exactly. He's just a guy that's cheap and expendable. He'll be gone after this year. All managers should be cheap and expendable. Nobody is worth not being that. And I doubt he'll be gone. And I don't think they hired him as a fall guy at all. They won't fire him this year but I wouldn't rule it out if there's a slow start next year. They might make him fire some coaches this year.
  22. Min- ought to get 3 points from their remaining schedule CLB- will get at least 2 points Det- a lot will depend on whether LA still cares at that point, They get 2 for beating Nash but that last game may be a 1 game playoff to get in Dal- If they win out they're in. PHX- A lot of things have to go they're way to have any chance. They're next loss eliminates them Nashville is the X factor. Do they have enough pride to play the spoiler?
  23. But it's an empty threat and that only makes the person who makes it look bad. If he already discussed this privately and is now going public, that suggests that he may be losing the team.
  24. "What's our record?" "8 and 18" "how'd we ever win 8?" "It's a miracle" LOLLYGAGGERS!
  25. I wouldn't be so sure. He'll porbably win the Rocket Richard trophy so they won't feel bad about giving the MVP to someone else. Also, a lot people just plain don't like him, whereas Crosby is the face of the sport. If Crosby plays this week and scores even 1 goal he wins the MVP.
