  1. So far I'd say yes. Niemi was a lot flashier due to his style but Crawford's been really good when he's had to be. At worst it's even.
  2. The difference is in the non core players. The depth of this team is a strength where it had been a weakness when they were rolling out the likes Pisani and O'Donnell out there. Comparing the current team to the cup team is a little premature at this point but here's some things we can say with some certainty: The core: 2013 Toews, Kane > 2010 version 2010 Keith, Seabrook> 2013 version Sharp, Hossa and Hjammer are about the same Areas where the cup team were better: The 3rd line depth at center behind Toews PP Campbell Areas where the current team is better: 3rd defensive pairing Corey Crawford PK TBD Is Bickell better than Byfuglien?- I'd say yes Is Saad better than Brouewer?- I'd say yes here too
  3. You only think that because its true. He hasn't been that good all season. That's what prompted the switching of the D pairings in the first place and, ironically, also prompted switching them back. I don't really like Hjammer and Oduya on the same pair becuase of games like last nights. Oduya had some really rough stretches including but not limited to being out of position on the goal. Oduya has had some really good games. Last night was not one. That's true but it seems like Oduya and Hjammer don't complement each other well enough to always make up for the other one struggling. The forwards being committed to their defensive responsibilities covers a lot of that up, as it did last night.

  5. The playoff schedule is completely idiotic. The Pens-Bruins should open Friday night and Hawks Kings Saturday night. Why schedule back to back games for the first 2 games of a series? Makes no sense. It's hard to tell what will happen in the East. Vokoun isn't very good but hasn't really had to be. The Bruins have had the easiest path to the finals of the remaining teams- The Sens were better than the Leafs, the Crosbies are just that good. The key will be Malkin's line vs. The Bergeron line. Not that they'll necessarily go head to head but how productive they are will determine the series. It's hard to cheer for the Crosbies, but I'd rather see their brand of hockey in the finals instead of the talented goons of Boston.
  6. He probably begged off the Hawks since he's worked so hard to not show bias toward them he's repeatedly made dumb statements against them. Heh, possibly. Or it's that ever despised east coast bias. In any case: So we'll have a steady diet of Darren Pang openly rooting against the Hawks. Oh well. Engblom is better than McGuire.
  7. against your historic rival who used to use you as a farm team and otherwise violate the sanctity of your being for years and years and years. so much awesome to this win, it's immeasurable Yeah, the newer fans don't really understand or appreciate the significance of this. It's like the Bears finally beating the packers at the start of the Lovie era or like the Cubs beating the Cards to advance to the World series. To clarify, there's absolutely nothing wrong with being a newer fan, since Dollar Bill Wirtz actively tried to alienate the fan base and players alike.
  8. Saad, while laying on the ice, punched whoever it was in the face, which would constitute roughing. At least I think that was what was called. However, what should have happened was a delayed penalty on the wing player first which would not have ended the play. Unless Saad did something first but it looked like Saad knocked down Zetterberg, elbowkater took exception and drilled Saad and then Saad retaliated. It seemed like the goal was already scored by the time Saad retaliated. No matter. This reminds me a lot of that bad call where the umpire ruined that guy's perfect game (and career in a way) for the Tigers a couple years ago.
  9. screw you and your sulley reverse mojo, BUDDY Ha. I keep bouncing back and forth between supreme confidence that the Hawks will win and horrific visions of a game 2 redux. Regardless, it's a bad idea to start speculating about a next series that may not even happen.
  10. The Hawks have been much better in recent years at forcing game 7s than they have been at playing them. No one should be looking ahead.
  11. Still though, 25 errors through this part of the season can't all be explained away by bad fields and a bad first baseman. If, and it's still a big if, Baez moves off SS that reduces his value at least partially if not significantly. While I agree that his bat will play anywhere, if he can stay at SS he's an elite prospect. edit: FWIW, none of the other Daytona infielders have more than 5 errors.
  12. I like how in the in game interviews Pierre asks Babcock a question and Babcock says words to the effect that "I'm not seeing that at all, we need to ..., ie you're an idiot, Pierre" Fun fact: I had to put my son to bed so when I left it was 1-0 and when I got back it was 2-2. The Hawks dominated the game while I was watching. Bickell is making a case for a top 6 spot next season. He's certainly going to be making more money. I'm curious to see what Babcokc tries this time. I'm guessing he goes back to the trap even though it stopped working in game 5. Anything can happen in a game 7. Hopefully, the better team wins.
  13. They'll probably lose Emery and Stalberg to FA. They'll probably trade Bolland. Playoff hero Bolland will be hard to replace DILLIGAF Bolland can be replaced in house with Pirri. LeBlanc or Denault *might* be in house options for that second line center. Otherwise, they can still unload Seabrook on some team that still thinks he's a first pairing defenseman.
  14. It's really hard to stay positive about this considering it all feels so familiar: can't score against an obviously inferior team. In a similar situation last year, Q threw Saad out there, Perhaps the time has come to bench Handzus and play one of the black aces. Actually, the time was after game 2 but I've beaten that dead horse for so long I deserve that beating a dead horse gif. The argument against getting a legit 2nd line center has been 1. they're expensive, 2. hard to come by and 3. The Hawks have enough scoring. What last year and this show me is that they can get by during the regular season with the likes of Handzus, Bolland, etc. but it comes back to haunt them during the playoffs.
  15. I'd like to be able to say that we've seen the last of Handzus in the starting lineup. There are plenty of better options. Even Mayers would be worth a look over Handzus. Shaw has got to learn to play with more discipline. The bitter fact is that they probably need him out there centering that 3rd line, especially if/when they bench Handzus. So, if you were Q, would you consider these lines: Sharp-Toews-Kane- Detroit can't stop all three and the Hawks need to open up space for Toews Saad-Bolland-Hossa- The de facto checking line but with lots of scoring punch, speed and talent Bickell-Shaw-Stalberg- this line has to play better against it's opposite number Morin/Smith-Kruger-Frolik- Kruger and Frolik deserve a finisher to make their line an actual threat to score instead of just being a nuisance Other options for that 4th line: Mayers or Pirri to win faceoffs
  16. So Pens fans here are dreading life after what transpired last night. It will be interesting to see what happens in game 4.
  17. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2013-positional-power-rankings-wrap-up/ Cincinnati 86 St. Louis 84 Milwaukee 82 Pittsburgh 80 Chicago 78 Washington 88 Atlanta 88 Philadelphia 83 New York 74 Miami 68 Los Angeles 85 Arizona 84 San Francisco 84 Colorado 80 San Diego 78 For another point of reference, here's BP, CAIRO, and Vegas projections stacked against each other: http://www.azsnakepit.com/2013/2/13/3986514/2013-mlb-projected-standings BP has 3 NL teams with > 86 wins, CAIRO has 5, and Vegas has 3 with 2 other 86 game winners. That has them going 16 over .500 against the AL
  18. The pens have good forwards but their defense is bad and their goalies both suck. It's funny, the Pens fans here aren't feeling good about their team at all.
  19. I feel like people have thought more highly of the RAngers than their play or their record actually merits. Maybe it's because of the short season and people think that this is the same Rangers team that played so well last year. They needed 7 games to get past a Caps team that was not very good. They have trouble scoring.
  20. Hopefully the Sha-arks can at least make a series of it.
  21. ‏@sportspickle 7h Patrick Kane Hoping Lady Byng is a Hot Chick - http://is.gd/yfrfUP Though he'd probably settle for like a 6
  22. if you're near the cap, you're only making money if you're in the playoffs. i can't imagine the first round exits of late have been too kind on the team coffers. that's if you believe what the nhl owners say about the economics of the game, anyway Think of it this way, each home playoff game they sell 20,000+ tickets and the cheapest tickets are about $100. Then add concessions revenue.
  23. Puck Daddy believes anybody else should get zero. at the 0:39 mark, he could have hit him cleanly in the shoulder but seems to miss that on purpose to get his head.
  24. la is by far the biggest threat. if we make it to the finals, we will do so as the clear favorites to win the cup. i'm more worried about boston than pitt Boston survived the first round by the skin of their teeth against the Maple Leafs. Why so much concern? Boston is a team of goons with talent. They also have a *potentially* dominant goaltender in Rask. That's the sort of team that winds up troubling the Blackhawks the most. Teams that try to skate with the 'Hawks usually pay the price. The Bruins won't do that. They'll have Lucic etal thug it up and make it a grind. The Hawks can still win that type of series.
  25. Yaroslava really needs to lose that headband thing.
