  1. Well, they have Khabibulin with NHL experience and they have Raanta in the pipeline. If Raanta played well enough to look like a plausible alternative that would take away some of Crawford's leverage. The Hawks also have pieces that they could trade in order to acquire a goalie.
  2. Yes. BTN is 610 and all the alternate feeds are directly below it, all in HD I'm not sure about every game but certainly most of them
  3. Health will be an issue as well in that the players that would have provided last years depth are either on the roster or gone. The team will also not be quite as fast as it was last year. Chances are the PK will not be as dominant while the PP (probably) still is clown shoes. On the other hand, Pirri has a pretty decent chance of being a better 2nd line center than Bolland was during the regular season. I believe that Morin will be a force on the 3rd or 4th line and Shaw will be better returning to 4th line wing where he belongs. The Hawks will still be very good and ought to win their division.
  4. I'm not so sure Hammer isn't a first pair guy right now. Seabrook brings more offensively but he started and ended last season with some very questionable (if not downright bad) play. I get that it's wrong to use "someone else would have paid him that or more" argument to rationalize a bad signing. That's not what's happening here. This move is insurance against the up and coming defensemen not panning out. Olsen took several steps back last season. Johns might try to become a FA once he leaves ND. Stanton looks to be more of a puck mover.Others might be more than a couple years away or plain old not as good. The Hawks paid less than market value for a known commodity and an effective contributor. If they need to, they could move Hammer in a matter of seconds. The Crawford signing is like giving a "proven closer" with a 1.50 WHIP $10 million for 5 years.
  5. I don't want to sound like I'm defending this deal, because I'm not, but don't goalies typically age slower than skill players? Him being 34 years old at the end of the contract doesn't seem like a big deal. I think it probably seems that way since it usually takes goalies longer to develop and the really good ones can hang around seemingly forever. It will be hard for him to be worth this contract, particularly since it will likely cost the Hawks either Hammer or Seabrook being traded to make cap room to pay Toews, Kane, Leddy and Saad.
  6. Really, is that true? Those two are the gift that keeps on giving for Toronto. Now they get to take postseason innings away from young pitchers. AA got thisclose to becoming an upper echelon GM, then shot his wad a year too early. Going to be tough for him now. no, i was just making a joke because i thought it was bush league that they sent down a 28 year old pitcher with a sub-2.00 ERA at AA so that he could pitch a playoff game for a single A club. I wonder though how many organizations view winning MiLB championships as an important part of development? I know the Orioles have done this in the past when Delmarva has been good (not an issue this year since they have a team full of 22 YOs playing low A ball and still managing to be horrible). I've also heard that the Cards think that it's really important too, though that could just be the big club blowing smoke. Personally, I don't really see it as a player development issue so much as a way to reward the farm teams who probably really need the extra revenue they get from playoff games.
  7. This time last year, fans and media alike were wondering if Crawford would even start. Now he's getting $6 million until he's 34. There's very little to like about this deal.
  8. If he blows away the AFL, it becomes a non zero chance, in my opinion, of him being in our Opening Day lineup. Even with our FO being extremely cautious. I just don't see any way he doesn't start the year in AAA. There's too much to be gained on multiple levels. He may come right up in May after continuing his dominance in Iowa and postponing FA, but no way on Opening Day. Javier Baez has been feasting on LH pitching when he's had the chance to face them .450/.500/.917/1.417 at AA (60 ABs). RHP has "held" him to an .837 ops at AA. That's too small a sample to worry but 100 PAs at AAA would seem like a worthwhile precaution before promoting him. I bet they'd also want him to play 3rd or 2nd base for a while assuming they don't move Castro in the off season. Baez doesn't seem to like playing 3rd very much. I don't remember him ever playing 2nd. Team control will still be a big factor too, though not publicly for obvious reasons.
  9. for those who were unaware, gretzky's mother is former american gladiator, Lace, seen here, below. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ht6Oo_qx5Vc/UYnmL3kqs8I/AAAAAAAAAkw/Wo_R4UwIOuU/s320/american_gladiators_box.jpg They stayed at the hotel I worked at in Champaign (they were in town for auditions IIRC). All of them, women included, absolutely stank of BO. I'm not sure if that was a side effect of steroids or just being so freakishly huge that they didn't care what anyone around them thought.
  10. I don't understand, who cares that Baez is ranked too low? Given the choice, I'd rather he be ranked too low on the off chance that he might use that as motivation or something.
  11. I think it actually has a lot to do with how much of a team and scheme sport it is. There are reasonable arguments that coaches are the most historically significant figures in football. Yeah and the greats seem to have been surrounded by greats. Montana had Rice and vice versa. Payton had an amazing defense, as did Bradshaw. Emmitt had a ton of HOF talent everywhere. Guys like Sanders and Marino have no rings. Its just too hard for an individual NFL player to get enough credit to be considered that far ahead of his peers. Jim Brown and Unitas have an argument because they played when they were actually able to stand out above the talent around them. But I picked Lombardi because there is such an argument for best player. Put the coach with the biggest influence on the game and with the trophy named after him. Paul Brown had more influence on the game than Lombardi. Brown pioneered coaching in a lot of ways. But Lombardi is more universally known. If you asked 100 people to name the greatest coach in NFL history probably 85% would say Lombardi. It does have to be Lombardi.
  12. That's what I thought. If you're going to put a fb player's head on a mountain it has to be a QB and not a very good RB that played for like 6 years. Besides, QBs are pretty. I was thinking of Bronco Nagurski. My bad. If it's going to be a QB it has to be Unitas or Montana. To whoever said Unitas was too long ago, what about Babe Ruth?
  13. I was going to say Charlie Murphy
  14. Olt had a hit to extend his hitting streak to 2 games for a .285/.428/.285/.703 line.
  15. So what? I think he's the best pick. But you're wrong because people think of Jim Brown as an actor/ civil rights advocate that played football as opposed to, for example, Jim Thorpe who was a great football player but isn't really known for anything else.
  16. I'd rather have Borgie unbanned.
  17. None of them think it's *likely*, and neither do I, but I don't think it's completely written in stone that he can't yet. Even if he can't play 3rd consistently, he can still be a useful asset to the Cubs. With Bryant and Villanueva around, Vitters can still become a useful guy that can back up 3 of the 4 corners without embarrassing himself that will be a lot more useful than whatever it is that Olt can still do. I'd like to believe that Olt can still be good. Just the same way that I'd like to believe that Brett Jackson can turn it around. It's not likely to happen though.
  18. Mike Olt and Brett Jackson each had a hit! Rubi Silva with 2 walks! It's a world gone mad Does Shawon Dunston Jr already have more walks as a pro than his father?
  19. Halas gets a lot of credit for inventing the NFL. Paul Brown would be another one. If it was going to be a player, I'd go with Red Grange who really legitimized pro football.
  20. Screw you. It's not coming soon enough. I'm done celebrating. I want to see hockey. Still deciding if I'm going to buy the full season of center ice or wait until after Christmas. Last year I watched all but 2 of the 48 regular season games. Anyone know how much it's going to be this year? I did a survey and said the reason I wasn't renewing was it was too expensive. I feel like they know that too.
  21. I'm going to try to get to the Hawks Caps game in DC this year. Glad they will willingly take my money without any of this nonsense.
  22. What position is he playing? 3b. Olt is DHing. I still like Vitters more as a prospect than Olt As an offensive prospect right now? Yes. As an overall prospect as a 3B? No. There's reason to believe Vitters can hit at the major league level. I'm just not sure where he can play without hurting a team's defense. I've never seen his inability to play 3B first hand, but the reports on his defense are seemingly universal that he is below average. I want to believe that he can gradually make himself average over the next couple years, but I have no evidence to suggest that he will. I see Vitters as being a Dave Magadan type: corner man that can back up 4 positions but not play any of them well enough to start on a good team. Vitters will be a useful player for someone. I'm not convinced Olt-for-4 hasn't already flamed out. He's looking a lot like Brett Jackson these days.
