  1. Would Syracuse have to change their school colors? Could be awfully confusing in those games vs. Illinois. Nothing against Syracuse but I'd rather see the Big 10 stay predominantly Midwest.
  2. The question is, will Joe Morgan mention Bonds more than he'll mention the great Joe Morgan? If you took a drink every time Joe Morgan referred to his career or the Big Red Machine, how long would it take to get drunk?[/i]
  3. Or the exact opposite is true. If the pen is your strength perhaps it's better to have a pitcher that can perform rather than another lousy bench option. I'm not saying I buy into that line of thinking but Baker might.
  4. But Hendry seems intent on trading Walker and unless they get a middle infielder back that means that Perez will get PT likely at the expense of Cedeno. Furthermore, the Cubs are asking a lot of MUrton in what is still essentialy his rookie year to be a run producer. Maybe he grows into that role but if he doesn't it's going to be a long season watching the parade of garbage vets that will be paraded out to LF this year.
  5. I think those three could be adequate this year in the 2 hole. The problem is none of them are locks, or near locks to put up those numbers, or even get a shot to put up those numbers in the 2 hole. It would be a gamble, but I'd prefer to go w/ youth @ the 2 and get a slugger behind the top 2 on base guys, Lee & ARam. I'd be a little nervous about Neifi batting 2 tho... Oh don't get me wrong, I'm all for one of those three, or a mix of those three getting the 2 spot. And obviously completely against Neifi ever seeing it. My whole hope for this offseason was on getting an adequate middle of the order hitter, so that Lee, Ramirez and X would account for the heart, in whatever order. If the Cubs did trade for Vidro would you bat him 2nd or 6th? I'm guessing that Jones will bat 5th because he's LH. Could a healthy Vidro conceivably bat 3rd with Lee & Ramirez 4-5? I really hate how we're left hoping that Baker won't bat Perez #2 and that Murton shocks the world and hits 30 HRs. Otherwise the lineup is pretty pathetic.
  6. Getting back to the 11 or 12 pitchers angle, if the Cubs do go with 11 then I think they'd be more likely to go with someone like Theriot instead of Grissom/ Hidalgo for that last bench spot. That way when Wood gets activated they can send Theriot down and go with 12 pitchers until Wood stretches himself out.
  7. How ironic is that. Eric Patterson might lose his job to the guy we got when we traded his brother. Nate Spears is the infielder. I'd liken him to a supersized Augie Ojeda. If he really presses Patterson for a starting job that means Patterson isn't very good. Spears may be a good utility player but from what I saw he looks like minor league roster filler. Of course I've only actually seen him play twice. He did have a couple hits in one of the games but it was one of those nights when people in the stands were getting hits off the opposing pitcher.
  8. Jones is obviously the less bad hitter, making Perez the worse option for #2. Of course Perez is the lesser of any two options regardless who the other player is. But wouldn't you want Slappy McNostick batting 2nd to bunt, hit-and-run with Pierre on base? That way Jones could break up the parade of RH hitters toward the back of the order.
  9. Is it worse to be a basketball player with Brick as part of your name?
  10. LOL Ramon Hernandez I thought that was his name but it sounded too much like a set up man or something. As far as their pitching goes, no they very likely don't have enough to make the playoffs. Unless they get good full seasons out of Bedard and Cabrera and somehow find a way to close games. Despite all their high profile moves, I'm still not all that impressed by the Blue Jays. The Yankees and Red Sox seem to be getting older and older. Which is why they could be competitive in a couple years. Which is also why Tejada should shut up and play. It's not like he didn't know what the O's were like when he signed there.
  11. A few questions: Who's a worse option for the #2 spot, Perez or Jones? If Cedeno starts the game at SS and Hairston at 2nd, which is more likely to be double switched in favor of Perez? If Cedeno and Hairston are in the lineup at the same time, which one of them bats 2nd or do they bat 7th, 8th?
  12. We were talking about the O's lineup yesterday 2nd Roberts 3rd Mora SS Tejada C/ DH Lopez LF/Dh Millar RF Gibbons 1st Conine C what's his name from the Padres CF Patterson If Markakis pans out this year that bumps Conine with Gibbons taking over 1st. Is this lineup worse than the 2006 Cubs?
  13. That's like a golfer named Heath Shanks or Paul Hooks
  14. On the way home it occurred to me that if Wood was indeed going to miss substantial time this season then there's no way they would have even considered trading Prior. So either they are playing the worst case scenario card or they never considered trading Prior.
  15. We are not man we are devo
  16. It will be interesting to see what the official word is at convention. I really believe that the Cubs are in fact hedging their bets but do expect Wood back toward the beginning of the season. Either that or they're waiting until after the convention to make an announcement that Wood will miss the whole season so they don't have to answer questions about it ....or get lynched.
  17. Don't breaking balls break less sharply at high altitudes? I thought that was one of the reasons they wanted Wellemeyer in Col. becuase he was a fastball/ change up guy. *If* that's the case then it would have an effect on making contact. On the other hand, it seems like Sosa's problem is catching up to the inside fastball.
  18. I think the league figured out that they didn't have to throw him a strike to get him out. So they didn't. By the time that he started to figure that out and adjust, the league started throwing him the occassional strike which he then started fouling off or taking. I will say this though. Getting traded is the best thing that could have happened to him, unless of course the O's try to turn him into Brett Butler too. Patterson should be able to bat 7th or perhaps 9th and play a great CF. He may not be a great player but the change of leagues could really help him.
  19. Only eight??? thought it was a lot more but for all the people who thought he wasthe next wunderkind, and I warned you not to over-rate these guys before they put three good years in in the majors I am going to say (which I feel is appropriate) I told you so I can hardly wait until were delluged by Patterson/ Pie comparisons the first time he struggles. :music2:
  20. I'm gald Patterson went to the Orioles. If he turns it around it will be for a team I like. Hopefully Baltimore is far enough away from Dusty Baker so he can be himself and swing for the short fence at Camden Yards.
  21. Which is likely what he does with Walker. I'd hate to see him trade Walker before ST just so he can avoid talking about it at convention.
  22. Didn't Bobby Hill go straight to AA after his Ind. league season? Given their ages I would think that's where they should be if they are to be anything else but system guys. BTW, love the signature
  23. Too extreme. How about Hendry wakes up with a bloody sweater vest on the pillow next to him?
  24. Will Montanez start the year at AA and then be promoted if he does well?
  25. It seems to me that some players like the stage and want to be in "clutch" situations while others don't. I can't recall any so called clutch players that weren't already good- great hitters. Actually, there's Mark Lemke but that was such a small sample. In any case, being called clutch is a preception more than anything else. Regarding the who would you want scenario, do you want your best hitter or your hottest hitter up in a clutch situation?
