  1. Did anyone notice that, at least according to the box score, Theriot played RF the other day? It was probably a mistake but if it were true he'd have a much better chance of making the team.
  2. Even though he wasn't an option, would you rather have Grissom or Restovich? How could I have forgotten Restovich? :-k Is it just me or has he gotten no buzz at all this ST?
  3. I'm pretty sure someone answered this before but why didn't RYU make the Korean WBC team? Do they really have that many pitchers that are better?
  4. I've been impressed with Marshall as well. If he stays healthy, he could be very, very good. Maybe it's time to see what value we could get for Hill in a trade... :-k I'm curious about the bolded part. Baker seems like he's been impressed with Marshall. He could be the source of this story.
  5. If Hendry feels the need to save his job, he'd probably try to trade Murton and others for an established player as building for the future would only benefit his successor. I would hope MacPhail would have fired him by then after having already been down that road with Ed Lynch.
  6. If team USA loses in the first round that should pretty much end the WBC.
  7. There are arguments both pro and con for all three. I left The Riot off the list since he's an infielder and that's a different discussion.
  8. Deep, Dusty....deep. Why not? Because that would mean that Baker couldn't carry the all important 12th pitcher. Duh
  9. Just like they were out of the running last year when they were ~15 out. Or the year before that. But those years, they had Clemens. This year, by June-July, they could be 20 games out without him. This year it mattered. The year before we flat out giftwrapped it for them. We should not finish behind them if they don't have Clemens for half of a season. I'm hoping that they'll hang around long enough to beat the Cards a few times and will fold down the stretch instead of losing all their early games and then becoming unbeatable. Where the Cubs finish in relation to the Astros depends more on the ability of the Cubs to beat the Reds and Brewers consistently than whther the Astros get a half season out of Clemens.
  10. You mean like that homeless guy that said he was there to read the meter? :hammer:
  11. You know the Cubs wouldn't get them. :( Not legally anyways, but since it's Cuba who cares about the laws? This is why we're forming a covert strike team to go down there and take the players that we want. Our elite strike team will be making regular trips to communist countries to extract their best talent and import it to the US under the radar. I think Rocket meant that even if he defects, he'd be a Yankee or Red Sox player. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see some attempted defections, especially if Cuba advances in the WBC But C-U-B-A to C-U-B-S is such an easy transition involving only one letter. In fact, if the Cubs switched to a cursive C-U-B-S it would be hard to tell the difference.
  12. The best argument for Sing making the team over Grissom (other than the fact that Grissom is old, etc.) is that Sing could be optioned to Iowa if/when the Cubs need room for Wood or Miller.
  13. Just like they were out of the running last year when they were ~15 out. Or the year before that.
  14. If he continues to hit well that will improve his chances of winning a gold glove. The GG is more about reputation and star power than anything else. Matheny is living proof that the "hit well enough to win a gold glove" doesn't really apply to catchers. But he is also proof that reputation goes a long way toward winning the award.
  15. I admit I don't pay much attention to the running joke that the GG has become. Did Piazza ever win a GG?
  16. If he continues to hit well that will improve his chances of winning a gold glove. The GG is more about reputation and star power than anything else.
  17. I know a kid who got called on it by his coach in college. Why is it suddenly perfectly fine to do the wrong thing just because so many others are doing it? In college or High school it's a different story. Adults are supposed to know better. Also, I never said it was fine. I was pointing out that if you're going to hold Baker's feet to the fire on this issue just about every other person in baseball is just as guilty. I don't need any more reasons to dislike Dusty Baker.
  18. Who was the 1% that didn't look the other way? I can't think of even one person that called anyone out on steroid use until very recently. Supposedly in the '70s, lots of players used amphetamines and no one talked about it. Why would steroids be any different?
  19. if only everyone was trying to help, including the veteran backup middle infielder who is allegedly part of the onfield leadership of this team. But to be an on-field leader doesn't he need to be playing?
  20. When was this? Bruce Miles article “I see Ronny pressing a little more, I think, than Matt,” Baker said. “Matt didn’t play winter ball, and Ronny did play winter ball. He had a great winter ball. Forget it and go on and be yourself. Every kid’s different. He’s got a lot of people around him who can help him. It’s all part of the learning process. He’ll be fine.” http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/sportsstory.asp?id=163627 That doesn't sound that bad to me, except the part about winter ball which doesn't make any sense. Cedeno's pressing because he had a great winter ball??
  21. Pierre doesn't know how to get a good jump when stealing a base? As often as he gets thrown out, I'd say yes, he could use some help.
  22. Did anyone catch the in game interview with Dusty Baker during Sunday's telecast? He sounded pretty impressed by Sing and "The Riot". I almost get the impression that Baker wouldn't mind having Pagan around. If he could play CF he'd be a decent bench player. He could also teach Pierre how to get a good jump when trying to steal a base. Anyway, the WBC, by taking away Barrett, Blanco and Lee, is a great opportunity for Sing and the catchers to show what they can do.
  23. I could see Florida trading for Soriano if Wash. eats part of his salary and the Marlins figure they can flip him later on.
  24. The Cubs look to have more team speed this season. It seems like they've been stealing a lot of bases so far. I wonder if that's just ST or if the Cubs are planning on being more aggressive on the base paths. More importantly, having a team full of guys that run well (except for Ramirez) should mean more runs scoring from first on xtra base hits.
