  1. 40 of 90? wouldn't that be 44% and 41 of 76 be 54%? I'm not the biggest math guy in the world but even at first glance 30 of 90 would be 1/3 or 33%. His percentages are right if you think of those numbers as 40/130, 41/117, and 34/164. Confusing language to be sure. Why would I think of them that way? I read the article and didn't see 40/130 etc antwhere.

  3. How many games under 500 will the Cubs have to fall before you fire Dusty Baker? Who do you think the new GM will get rid of first, Neifi Perez or Jacques Jones? Would you prefer tarred & feathered or ridden out of town on a rail? Has Ed Lynch been giving you advice on how to handcuff the team's future when you know you'll be fired? Has Kenny Williams thanked you for making him look like a genius in comparison to you?
  4. I could see the Cubs going with 11 pitchers to start the season. SP: Prior, Zambrano, Maddux, Williams, Rusch (until Wood) CL: Dempster Howry and Williamson are locks from the right side. Eyre and Ohman are lock and near locks respectively (Ohman since he's LH and Baker will want more than one) That leaves Wuertz and Novoa to battle for the 11th spot. But what happens when Wood comes back or if he starts the season in the pen? Probably they carry 12 pitchers again. In any case given Baker's tendancy to micromanage the pen, I believe he'll want that extra pitcher anyway.
  5. With departure of Macias, The Cubs have 3 MI (Cedeno, Perez and Hairston) if they move Walker. Would they promote Fontenot or Theriot to the ML bench or would they need another SS/ 2nd in any deal for Patterson or Walker? It seems to me that if they trade Walker we're going to really hate seeing Perez/ Hairston or Jones batting 2nd. I'd love to know what it is that Walker does that makes teams run him out of town with such regularity.
  6. My first car was a Geo Prizm. Laugh if you will but my wife's uncle is still driving it and its going on 225,000 miles. Currently, my vehicles are a Pontiac Bonneyville and a Buick Terraza (it's a mini van).
  7. I've been away for a few days and haven't read all the threads on this. When I was in Chicago, I heard there was speculation that the Cubs didn't believe they could sign Prior long term (specifically, Prior wants to go back to CA.) so they're trying to trade him now for another superstar to make his departure look like a positive.
  8. A few comments: until Barry Bonds, the universally despised Joe Morgan was the ultimate moneyball player. currently, black players make up only 10% of the league. Therefore it stands to reason that there would be fewer black moneyball players due to sample size. just to clarify the purpose of this thread- and not meaning to open a can of worms- it seems like the contention is that it's not sybermetrics that's racially biased but James disciples at NSBB that have that bias. If that is the case, I have been here since the beginning and I honestly do not believe that any of the syber guys give race a 2nd thought when evaluating a player.
  9. Or maybe this is incentive for the O's to pull the trigger or perhaps lower their demands.
  10. All work and no play makes BalsaWoodKeyBoard a very dull boy. All work and no play makes BalsaWoodKeyBoard a very dull boy. All work and no play makes BalsaWoodKeyBoard a very dull boy. All work and no play makes BalsaWoodKeyBoard a very dull boy. No TV and no beer make Homer go something something? Go Crazy? Don't mind if I DO!!! "Feeling Fine", well, that's encouraging.
  11. Defensively the answer would be no but I'm guessing you mean offensively. The question we should be asking is will the drop off defensively from Patterson to Pierre be outweighed by increased productivity of Pierre offensively. I'd put that as probably even given the importance of CF defense and Pierre's suspect ability to provide that defense. As far as the BP goes there is one pretty important element that no one seems to mention and that is that the Cubs most consistent relievers- Wuertz and Ohman will not have to bear as much of the burden now that the Cubs have other options for the 7th and 8th. Since Baker is still the Micro Manager, the Cubs are a safe bet to go with 12 pitchers again. CL- Dempster RH- Howry, Williamson, Wuertz, Novoa (assuming Williams is a SP) LH- Eyre, Ohman (assuming Rusch starts the year in the rotation until Wood is ready) The weakest link in that pen is Novoa and he's not that bad.
  12. I just don't see how the Cubs trading Prior or the Orioles trading Tejada and Bedard for Prior makes either team better.
  13. Before signing Jones I would have said Cards. After not only signing Jacques Jones but giving him 3 years it's Cubs hands down.
  14. The advantage of trading Guzman to the D-Rays is that it's almost as though he's not even in pro baseball. As far as Sing goes, he was left unprotected in the rule 5 draft and no one wanted him. Why would any team trade for him now? I'd like to see Sing make the team as a 4th OF/ PH type which might be possible if Hairston is still around to back up CF.
  15. I'm 37 and have heard people say Happy Holidays and Season's Greeting ever since I can remember. Why do people suddenly care? Speaking of other holidays, one of my students last year is related to the guy that invented Kwanza.
  16. Cubs get: Tejada Mora Gibbons Orioles get: Ramirez Cedeno Patterson Novoa Rusch Ryu Or replace Cedeno with another pitcher and the O's sign Nomar to play SS.
  17. How did Roy Hobbs not make this list? Is it the injury risk?
  18. From talking to O's fans, it seems as though they might non tender Matos, which would leave them in need of a CFer. They would also need a SS unless they feel they can sign Nomar. The O's supposedly had contacted Nomar about playing 1st for the O's. Nomar would likely jump at the chance to prove himself at SS. So, looking at their needs, the O's have Bedard, Lopez and Cabrera as the heart of their rotation. They could definitely use one or two more SP and are without a viable closer unless they are thick enough to try Hawkins there. Besides the Obvious Prospects (Pie, Guzman, Williams, Cedeno) I would think the O's would have interest in the following Cubs: -Patterson since he could bat 9th and be a sort of 2nd leadoff without the pressure of the spotlight and a coaching staff trying to turn him into slappy McNostick. - Rusch whom they might insert into their rotation -Wellemeyer (did he actually get traded to CO or is that a rumor?) whom they've seen and seem to like -Novoa who could compete for the closer role
  19. Just because he wants to be traded now doesn't mean the O's are forced to trade him. I would expect them to ask a lot more than what has been offered here. In other words, if you think Pie, Guzman, Patterson, and Williams is overpaying then forget about Tejada -at least for the time being. The O's don't need to clear payroll and it's against their nature to rebuild (regardless of whether or not they should) I'd be interested to see if the O's and Cubs could discuss a blockbuster type deal such as Tejada, Mora and Gibbons for Ramirez, Cedeno, Wellemeyer and Patterson. The Cubs could then re sign Nomar to play 3rd and put Mora in RF, or Put Mora at 3rd and start Gibbons in RF. I look for the O's to meet with him, smooth things over and maybe trade him during the season when he will still be in high demand.
  20. Jay Gibbons who will come over as part of the Tejada trade :fencing:
  21. Neifi and Rubby. Am I the only one that thinks that Rubby sounds like a perverted cartoon mascot for some internet porn site?
  22. So this is Christmas? and what have you done? you've dumped Macias who hit .191 :santa:
  23. Did the Cubs offer Patterson arbitration? Wouldn't they have to if they wanted to retain his rights? I suppose they have as much as said they will offer Hairston arbitration.
  24. I do too. I'm trying to look at this in a positive way, as well. I can see some positives in it, and some negatives. I'm choosing to believe the positives. These positives being? Here's some positives: The Cubs won't be tempted to give Damon a 5 year contract. As long as Pierre stays healthy, we won't see Perez leading off. Now Hendry can concentrate on finding a RF This trade won't destroy the franchise but has a good chance of looking really horrible in 3 years time. Then again what do I know. I thought the Cubs would regret trading Choi.
