  1. A 5 year $55 million deal with a $10 million buyout would be nice deal for Sosa to don the Cardinal Red.
  2. I wonder what Theo could say that would make having the 2nd highest payroll and a playoff caliber team already in place not sound attractive to an out of work GM. "Have you heard the way these people talk, They say "Chow-da" for Pete's sake!"
  3. Saw this yesterday http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=citadel-2_458676_260&prov=citadel&type=story
  4. The Sox won the WS. Jimmy crack corn. This doesn't change anything. At least in the process they humiliated a division rival perhaps ruining their best pitcher (Lidge) in the process. At least they got it over with quickly. The only real damage the Sox have done is reinforced the idiotic notion that smallball is a good idea. Hopefully enough people noticed that the Astros also tried to play smallball and their offense looked anemic doing so.
  5. Don't the A's still need a 2nd baseman? What about Walker and junk prospects for Zito?
  6. In this particular case total goals doesn't factor in at all. Also, there was no bench to clear as everyone was on the field since both teams were missing players. As far as not trying goes, I really don't think our kids would have been insulted by the other team not trying though I have no way of knowing for sure. That being said I still don't know how I feel about that other coach. I wish that he had let his younger players play offense instead of letting one of his very talented 9 year olds score 4 more goals when the game was already in hand at 5-0. If he does that and they still score goals then I have no problem. Back ups like to score too. I guess the real question is it really any better losing 5-0 than 9-0?
  7. REally it goes back to 1983. The Sox were good and everyone was excited since no Chicago team had won anything in a long time. I got excited about the Sox that year. Then in 1984 it was the Cubs' turn. A strange thing happened, not a single Sox fan that Iknew was excited about the Cubs. In fact they were very spiteful and delighted in the Cubs' collapse. In 1989 I was in college and two of my roomates were Cub hating Sox fans. I really didn't expect that team to beat the Giants but that didn't stop them from rubbing it in anyway. If the Cubs were to win the WS in the next couple years I can't see myself calling either of them to rub it in. However, I can't help thinking that one of them will call me if the Sox win even though we haven't spoken in about 10 years. Basically it doesn't really matter who wins the WS this year. I don't care about the Sox now and won't care about them next season or ever. Of course I wouldn't mind seeing the Astros win the series 4-2 either.
  8. My son is in a soccer league for 7,8 & 9 year olds. Two of the teams are stacked with 9 year olds. Most of the kids on my son's team are 7. There are 2 that are 8 but neither have played before. The game Sunday ended up 9-0. One of the parents on our team said he was going to say something to the other coach about not running up the score against an obviously inferior opponent. Is it wrong to run up the score on an opponent?
  9. It may be wishful thinking but Preston Wilson seems more like a guy Hendry would bring in during the season rather than the offseason. The speculation about getting Wilson this past season had more to do with getting a bargain deal than Hendry tragetting him as someone he likes. Hendry is a bargain hunter. Wilson is no bargain unless someone else is paying some/ most of his salary. When Hendry says he's going to address leadoff that means Furcal not Wilson.
  10. At the risk of injecting some baseball discussion here I ask these questions: 1) Are the White Sox and Astros the two worst offenses to make it to the WS? (THat is if they advance) 2) Would a Astros- White Sox WS be the lowest rated ever? 3) If the Cards were to win these last 2 games will the Astros ever recover after being 1 strike away from the WS?
  11. One thing I forgot to mention. I have the HR ball that Pujols hit. I was walking from my car to school and saw a baseball lying on the ground with a huge rip in the cover. and by the way. No team can claim to have the best fans. Any team that claims to have the best fans would therefore not have the best fans because the best fans would not by definition concern themselves with having that reputation and would therefore have little need to go around bragging about it.
  12. A few things about this series: Is it just me or is the Astros offense eerily similar to the Cubs'? They have a good hitter that is basically doing what he always does (Berkman for Astros, Ramirez for Cubs) a guy having a career year (Ensberg, Lee) and the rest of the lineup are first pitch hackers. I was flipping channels and every time I flipped back the Cards were batting. The Astros must have the worst hitting approach of any succesful team I've seen. Are the Astros going to permanently ruin Lidge? The shelf life of dominant closers is short and they have a tendacy to suddenly lose effectiveness. Lidge has great stuff but these 2 inning saves seem to be catching up to him. Why does it make sense to play small ball in the playoffs? If the pitching is that much better why give them a free out? Speaking of small ball, Isn't it funny to see teams try to bunt, fail but score anyway when they get a hit? I could have sworn I heard an announcer say that Posednik had been thrown out stealing 20 times this season. That can't possibly be true, can it?
  13. I'd be leery of being able to sign Millwood in leiu of Hendry bringing in a guy like Kirk Rueter to be that 5th starter. I don't trust Rich Hill, and Pinto and Guzman are probably not ready. Likewise, I no longer have blind faith in Hendry to not sign washed up scrubs or bad players solely because they are veterans. Not to say I wouldn't pull the trigger on that deal, or even throw in extra players to get it done, but I'd be concerned that we're dealing 40% of our expected 2006 rotation. Hendry has already said that he's looking for a starting pitcher so it would only be 20% of the starting rotation that gets traded in that deal. What will be interesting to see is if Rusch exercises his option or leaves via FA. If Rusch stays that provides a little more depth to fill in the rotation and makes Williams more expendable.
  14. First of all, no one is underestimating Prior- or at least I'm not. Fact of the matter is that the Yankees aren't going to just give up Arod. They're going to demand big time talent back so any deal for Arod is going to be very expensive. Second, not one man but two. Maybe Cano is a flash in the pan. From what I've seen he looks like a pretty good hitter and will only get better. I would be concerned about his OBP. Though he only walked 16 times in 500+ ABs he only K'd 68 times which suggests that he could hit for more than his .297 average this season. He has enough speed to bat 2nd and a .350 OBP isn't too much of a stretch. Finally, Patterson and Wellemeyer have had many chances to show what they can do. I still believe that Patterson could turn it around but I also believe he'd have a better chance somewhere in the AL where he could be left at the bottom of the order to figure things out. Wellemeyer has to learn to throw his fastball for strikes.
  15. But they'd also be getting Cano who should be pretty good. Also, the Yankees are going to want a big time pitcher for Arod and I'd rather trade Prior than Zambrano if I had to chose between the two. Patterson and Wellemeyer are nothing. The only part that hurts is giving up Prior. However, considering how good the offense would be all the Cubs would have to do is pull a Cardinals and pull an ace pitcher out of nowhere.
  16. I apologize if this was somewhere in the middle 15 pages of this thread somewhere. When will they get rid of the OF umpires that they add for the playoffs? Those guys are almost never in a position to make a call because they don't seem to know what to do. I don't really blame them. Putting an umpire down the foul line is like playing Eric Karros at 3rd base: little good can come of it and there's an excellent chance things will get screwed up. I hate instant replay mostly because it's based on the false premise that the officials- with the benefit of replay- will always get the call right. In football every time there's a replay the announcers make their guess about the call being upheld/ overturned. The announcers are only right about half the time. A bad call is even more frustrating when it's upheld by replay as is very often the case.
  17. Working with a couple assumptions: 1) Yankees will demand big names for Arod 2) Yankees are not interested in getting younger so much as they are getting back to the WS. Yankees get: Prior Ramirez Walker Patterson Wellemeyer Cubs get: Arod Cano Cubs then re sign Nomar to play 3rd and move Arod to SS. They also sign Burnett. Of course they'll need a LH hitting RF but that's already the case. Fire away
  18. You'd have a hrad time making a lineup with all those LH hitters 2b Grudz R 3rd Mueller S LF Gonzalez L RF Stairs L 1st Palmeiro L SS Gonzalez R CF Matthews S C Miller R
  19. So the Sox are "us" to you? That's like giving Bea Arthur mouth-to-mouth. As the song says Don't worry, Bea Arthur
  20. In general terms, I'd say AL teams could easily afford to carry a position player that didn't look to play much, especially if he was good defensively or had speed. Bacon seems like he could be easily hidden on a roster. The question is whether he's worth the risk, upside wise.
  21. The Sox win and still no one cares. The Cards win and all that BS about their "tradition of winning" actually means something. Go Sox, I guess. Either way their fans are going to be obnoxious. So what difference does it make?
  22. Didn't see this posted anywhere. I guess we'll need a new Daytona correspondent. Changes to Daytona Broadcast Booth in '06 (Scout.com) http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=citadel-2_447484_260&prov=citadel&type=story
  23. I wish the Cubs had a manager that only sucked this much.
