  1. Jody Davis was one of those .... men in blue sing it, Sut
  2. Are you certain about that? I thought the purpose of the rule was to prevent sign-and-trade transactions, not to protect the player. well, it kind of does both. if nomar agrees, he can be traded back to the cubs as soon as he's off the DL. His being on the DL has nothing to do with his eligibility to be traded. The Cubs got Rondell White while he was on the DL as an example. It doesn't happy very often but he could theoretically be traded while still on the DL. But why would Hendry trade for a guy he could have resigned for free? Not that it's a bad idea. In fact it makes sense on a lot of levels. But I don't really see it happening.
  3. I believe it was Dick Ruthven who was the other starter. And an obscure guy by the name of Rich Bordi, who I only remember because I have his autograph. I think I may have the other Rich Bordi autograph
  4. What is the worst collision in Cubs history?
  5. From memory the 1984 Cubs Bob Dernier- had a career year Ryne Sandberg- came 1 HR and 2 triples short of 20 HRs/ 20 doubles/ 20 Triples Gary Matthews- his last days in the sun Keith Czonk Moreland- and we complained about Sosa's defense Leon Durham Ron Cey Jody Davis- catcher without a peer (though I thought it was beer which is a lot funnier) Larry Bowa- and we call Pierre a slap hitter Henry Cotto Jay Johnstone "Young" Dave Owen Steve Lake Richie "The Hacker" Hebner Thad Bosley Ron Hassey for about 5 minutes Davey Lopes for about 10 minutes Suttcliffe, Eckersley, Trout, Sanderson (can't remember the 5th starter, he was #44 Dave something) Lee Smith Tim Stoddard George Frazier Warren Brusstar Can't remember the last guy out of the pen. Chuck Rainey, Rick Rueschel, Dickie Noles?
  6. I may be the only person that believes this but I think Stone likes Kerry Wood and his harsh comments are out of frustration for what Stone sees as a lack of development in Wood. As a teacher I see students every day that consistently underperform and it's very frustrating. At some point it becomes very tempting to challenge them to do better by criticism or even sarcasm. That approach runs the risk of making you look like a jerk but if it works they'll be the better for it in the long run.
  7. Say wha??? I know it's hard to believe. I even looked it up to make sure but Larry Bowa did get a hit in 1984.
  8. I remember the Cubs winning 3 out of 4 at Shea. The Cubs dropped game one of the series and the Mets fans were calling for a sweep. Thad Bosley contributing what seemed like a lot of PH Steve Stone Drinking a Budweiser and Harry Caray smoking a cigar after the Cubs clinched. That time that Larry Bowa got a hit.
  9. If Lee is on the 15 day, no changes are made to the 40-man roster. If he's on the 60-day, teams have the option of making changes to the 40-man. So the Cubs wouldn't lose anyone with Lee on the 15-day. I think you are mistaken. Restovich is not on the 40 man roster. If he is brought up and Lee isn't put on the 60, somebody needs to be taken off of the 40 man roster. The potential to lose someone is there regardless. When Lee comes off the 60 day DL someone will have to be removed from the 40 man roster. Of course by that time the Cubs could make a trade or release someone like Bynum. The way I see it, if the Cubs want to promote someone not currently on the 40 man they have these options: Move Prior to the 60 day DL retroactive to whenever he last appeared. (Is this legal?) Move Lee to the 60 day de roster Theriot or Reyes (the other catcher on the 40 man) release/ DFA Bynum then promote Theriot and Restovich/ Hoffpauir/ Sing
  10. Walker will be fine picking balls in the dirt. Anyone with the hands and athletic ability to play 2nd base should have no trouble with that aspect of playing 1st. The big concern will be with the little things like fielding bunts or throwing to 2nd on a force play. That being said, it's important to remember that 1st base is the place they put people that can't play anywhere else. We'll miss Lee's offense a lot more than his defense.
  11. How ironic would it be if Baker made all the right moves with the players available but doesn't get renewed because of the garbage that Hendry gave him to play RF? I'm not a big fan of Baker but so far he's been pretty reasonable playing the right people, not messing with the lineup, etc. As far as the lineups go, I can't make up my mind who will be more productive between Mabry and Hairston. I tend to favor this lineup because it has more pop Pierre Murton Walker Ramirez Barrett Jones Cedeno Mabry
  12. In defense of Hendry, this early in the season the list of sellers is very small. Teams are still finding out what they have which makes trades much harder. That being said I'm sure Hendry will be burning up the phone lines to find another bat but he can't really say that publicly. He has to show support for the players that are already here. Also, he has to be careful not to get fans hopes up too much for a trade that might never happen. In short, he said what any GM would have said. If available, Mora would be a great acquisition. He could play 1st though he might be better at 2nd with Walker at 1st. When Lee gets back he could platoon with Jones as well as spell Ramirez and Murton. The only problem is that I'm not sure the O's have anyone else that can play 3rd.
  13. Lee to the 60 day DL would solve that problem. I've seen 6-8 weeks. With a rehab assignment that comes to 60 days.
  14. Let's suppose the worst case scenario for Lee and he's out for 2 months. The Cubs need a guy that has the following credentials 1) can play both 1st and OF 2) bats RH (as a platoon partner for Jones once Lee returns) 3) can hit somewhere in the middle of the lineup 4) plays for a team that needs pitching Besides Wilson, who else meets that description?
  15. I can't see Maddux sticking around at a reduced price. He already has a ring and is a first ballot HOF. Why take a paycut?
  16. 6' 235 lbs Your switch hitting 3rd baseman
  17. If Maddux has a good year, is he a Type A FA? If so the comp pick would be nice. Maddux's future as a Cub also depends on the progress of Marshall, Hill and Guzman not to mention Wood, Miller and Williams.

    Bonds

=D> Bonds started his career saying and acting like he didn't care what the fans thought about him. If he wanted the fans to love him he shouldn't have been such a jerk. Wanting the fans to love him now just makes him look pathetic.
  19. I refuse to post in this thread until the Diamond Jaxx make their logo available for Little League uniforms.
  20. If this injury had occurred in late June the Cubs would have been a lot more likely to call up Pie. Later in the season it won't really hurt Pie that much to ride the bench in the majors for two weeks but right now they probably don't want to interrupt his good start to the season. That's what they did with Cedeno and Murton and it didn't seem to hurt either of them. Aardsma's promotion also seems to indicate that Jones will be playing again soon. Whether or not that's a good thing is still up for debate.
  21. First Dusty Baker fills out a lineup card correctly now Joe Morgan says something that makes sense. What's next? Stuart Scott not being annoying? Rush Limbaugh having lunch with Howard Dean? :gape:
  22. Jody, Jody Davis Catcher without a beer
  23. I was hoping that there would be a fight bewteen the Cubs and the Cards and that Pujols would inadvertently pull off Carpenters arm and use it to beat Perez into retirement which would also result in Pujols being exiled to the D-Rays permanently. Am I a true fan?
  24. Isringhausen looked terrible. Is he hurt? I've never thought of him as an elite closer but he's usually at least somewhat effective. Speaking of the game, what's with Joe Morgan saying something that makes sense. When LaRussa brought in Isringhausen Morgan said he understood bringing him in to face Lee & Ramirez The Cards bullpen has been the key to their success the last two seasons. This was just one series but if their pen doesn't get better they could be in trouble.
  25. I can't see how it being a contract year would make any difference to a manager. The pressure to win is always there. A player can mail it in and perhaps not suffer for it. Managers can't mail it in. That's usually their biggest problem. Poor managers tend to try to do too much and wind up micro managing (Like using unneccessary double switches) and basically outsmarting themselves. I have no way of knowing but perhaps Baker actually feels less pressure this year. He likely has enough talent to win enough games to keep his reputation in tact. So if he doesn't get re upped he can still get a job somewhere else. He won't be seen as a failure because, hey it's the Cubs. There's an entire TV network dedicated to reminding people how bad they are. If he does win then he's set. Much as I dislike Baker, it's hard to deny that he has been the most successful manager since WWII. A lot of that is not his doing but if a manager gets blame for losing then he msut also get credit for winning.
