  1. I've been calling him the Marmot, which doesn't really make any sense, but it does give me the opportunity to say "marmot." And that's pretty awesome in my book. By that criteria his nickname could also be schism which is fun to say. I encourage everyone to use the word schism in conversation with an unsuspecting person.
  2. As someone once said "Everyone's a prospect until they become a suspect" It stands to reason that the lower levels would have more guys considered prospects and fewer system players. There are a lot of talented players in AA but there are also a fair amount of guys like Gary Cates that can be successful at AA but will never see the big leagues. AAA players are more experienced but aren't always as talented. There are more system guys than AA but they are better system guys. There are also a lot of guys in AAA that have high ceilings that are biding their time, working on a particular aspect of their games against more experienced competition. As for players skipping AAA entirely, it's true that it happens more often than it used to but I'd guess that most players still make at least a brief stop in AAA before getting the call.
  3. I'm still afraid that Perez will start against LH.
  4. Did you break your wrist or the bones in your arm near your wrist? Derrek Lee's break is not in the joint but the bones leading to it. From what I've read that's not as bad.
  5. Vance Law, Jim Sundberg and the legendary Larry Biittner are awaiting the call.
  6. I vote for the inanimate carbon rod over Baker.
  7. But even the people that think he's older realize that at most he's 28. That means he likely has at least 7 more years to torment the NL Central barring injury. Our only hope is that the Yankees somehow offer him $35 million per season.
  8. It just occurred to me that there is a silver lining to a Womack callup. If they send down Theriot when they call up Womack they will then have to demote Bynum during Barret's suspension. They will also have to drop someone from the 40 man roster. In short, there will never be a better time to DFA Bynum.
  9. Double True
  10. Other Pink Floyd titles that I find fitting Us and Them Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun Other titles Cubs offense: Cold as Ice (Foreigner) Being a Cub Fan: Time for me to Fly (REO Speedwagon- the bitterest band ever)
  11. So if you were the Marlins, why would you accept him in trade? And unless ARam's season makes a dramatic turnaround, why would he opt out of a guaranteed 22+M over the next 2 years as well as a very good chance of another 11M for 2009 (mutual option vests with 270 games 07-08 ) I do expect him to hit well enough to be an attractive addition by the trade deadline. He's started hitting for more power lately. He'd opt out of the contract because he'd rather not play for a last place team. What GM would give him more money than the Cubs? Much more stupid moves have been made on numerous occasions.
  12. You guys act as though it still matters. I see 3 possible scenarios with the Womack callup in order of likelihood from least likely to most likely: 1 he comes up and does well. We don't have to watch the Cubs lose all the time. Baker gets the extension that he is going to get anyway. 2 He's so bad that even more people will start calling for Hendry and Baker's heads 3 he does about the same as Hairston etal and the Cubs continue to flounder.
  13. Keep in mind that the Marlins could always flip whatever high dollar players they get to another team. Marlins get: Ramirez and Prior Cubs get: Cabrera 3 weeks later the Marlins then trade prior to just about any team for prospects. Even if they can't trade Ramirez- though I'd think they could especially to an AL team- he'd almost certainly opt out of his contract. I'm not sure if the owners really care what the 3 remaining Marlin's fans think but if they do care at all it would be much easier to sell the idea that they were going to trade Cabrera for someone with name recognition.
  14. Allow me to finish that thought: ".....we will suck only slightly less." Imagine for a second that Lee doesn't get hurt. Do the Cubs still lose 15 of 20 or whatever in May? Perhaps not but I don't see why things would be that much better. The Cubs had Lee last year and still managed 2 different extended losing streaks. Give the Cubs Lee all season and Prior and they're still no better than 3rd place.
  15. replace the seta behind the bull pen with a grassy knoll and playground and you have an exact replica of Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, home of the shorebirds. Great thing about ninor leagues is that you're never far from the action even in the worst seats.
  16. which unhealthy, self destructive addiction is easier to kick?
  17. Are you sure you're not Joe Morgan? :D
  18. Geovony Soto, your cup of coffee is ready. So who goes down, Theriot or Novoa? It would make more sense to send down the 12th pitcher but having one less bench option might keep Baker from making an unneccesary double switch. Let this be a lesson to anyone that thought the Cubs bench couldn't get any worse. 10 games before the appeal, how many after? Seems like 6 would be punishment enough.
  19. The way they're going lately, both the Reds and the Astros will be looking up at the Brewers pretty soon.
  20. Then how does it explain his use of the younger Cedeno? He had to use one or the other and Cedeno is faster and therefore more qualified.
  21. With Murton going 0-3 batting 2nd last night I'd guess he's unlikely to ever bat 2nd again ala the 1 game experiment with Bellhorn leading off.
  22. I've been watching a lot of little league games lately. It's funny how little league coaches understand the concept of making the opposing pitcher throw strikes but that concept completely elludes Dusty Baker. Then there's the idea of stealing bases when you know the other team's catcher has no chance of throwing anyone out.
  23. A colleague searched French military victories and Google asked "Did you mean French military defeats?"
