Since Hendry will still be here this off season and will be under a lot of pressure to win now, I don't see any kind of rebuilding effort that most people here would want. Hendry's first order of business will be to sign Ramirez, assuming he opts out of his current contract. Hendry will offer Pierre arbitration and go from there. Some other GM will probably be dumb enough to give Juan Pierre a long term deal. If not Hendry signs Pierre to a one year/ $8 million with a player option in 08 and a team option in 09. With Pierre still in the fold, Hendry will try to strengthen the starting rotation and win with pitching and defense. The difference being that Lee will be healthy, Murton and Cedeno will get better and Izturis or Jones will have a career year. If Pierre is gone then Pagan gets the CF job until Pie is ready. Hendry will concentrate his efforts on landing one starting pitcher through FA and one by trading away some of his young pitchers. Hopefully Veal will not fall victim but he is definitely someone other teams are likely to ask about. Trading Veal this off season could be a huge mistake in the long run but Hendry won't care because he's trying to save his job. Same holds true for Gallagher though he probably wouldn't be as highly sought after. The NL Central is likely to be pretty weak again next year. The Reds should give back a bunch of the wins they added this year- at least from a historical standpoint they should. The Astros lineup is questionable and they lose Clemens and Pettite. The Cards are not the team they once were. They still have Pujols and a rapidly aging Rolen but the rest of their lineup is junk. Milwaukee should be the preseason favorite on the basis of their young talent but they always seem to find their way to mediocrity. As a result, Hendry will not see the need to really do anything overly dramatic. He won't trade Zambrano, Lee or Barrett which is what it would take to rebuild. Purple Monkey ashtray- a Simpson's reference to reflect the fact that no one reads past the first paragraph of a long post. So basically it's going to take improvement from all the youngsters, a career year from a vet and good health to right the ship. Not the best plan to be sure but better than usual for an organization that has always hoped for the best.
