  1. If a player can be traded while on the DL why can't he be waived?
  2. Though I don't know if he'll get serious consideration given that he's playing half season ball but Tyler Colvin has had a pretty good season at Boisie. Since it's inevitable, I'll nominate Chris Robinson for making a huge contribution to the entire franchise. :D
  3. I just heard on the radio that Glavine's blood clots are not serious and he could be back in a week. That Likely hurts the chance of Rusch to the Mets.
  4. The Shorebirds played Lakeland about 60 times this year. Had I known I would have gone to see Mr. Robinson.
  5. I understand what you're saying but if they are able to play that well with the team they have to they really need an overhaul? The pitching is young and should improve. Hendry has already said he's not going to count on "certain guys" to be healthy. A healthy Lee makes this offense much more potent. Free Cedeno and Murton from the current coaching staff and they should improve upon their rookie year production. This team does have some serious flaws. But the division- which is bad this year- doesn't look to get much better in 07. The Cards have lost their luster. The Astros may lose their 2 best starting pitchers in Clemens and Oswalt. The Reds won't get the kind of pitching they got this year. The Brewers will probably be favord to win the division. The Brewers! In any case it doesn't matter. Hendry's not going to overhaul this team. He needs to win now to save his job.
  6. I think this move has more to do with injuries at Iowa then anything else. Fontenot must be hurt. They've actually put McGehee at 2nd a few times recently. If Gary Cates was Healthey he might have gotten this promotion instead of Patterson.
  7. you just provided the most compelling reason I've heard for his promotion. I'm still waiting for him to call Theriot "The Riot" Actually, I believe he has. I recall him saying "The Riot" twice within a minute the last time Theriot was up. Great, now if he'd only call Pierre Slappy the circle would be complete.
  8. you just provided the most compelling reason I've heard for his promotion. I'm still waiting for him to call Theriot "The Riot"
  9. He's off to a good start. I think he's an adequate replacement in CF for Edmonds next season. You're forgetting how impressed Hendry is by guys that play well against the Cubs.
  10. yes please, I know little as well The Good: He's new, he's studied under Bobby Cox, he's not Dusty Baker The Bad: Hendry likes him so he must be paleolithic when it comes to baseball philosophy
  11. Too bad Detroit didn't need a middle infielder when Izturis was available.
  12. Any time a team has a catcher that can actually hit someone eventually suggests moving them to a different position to extend their career. This idea might make more sense in a couple years when Fox is ready. Until then there's no way the Cubs can further downgrade their offense.
  13. If the Cubs were going to bat Murton 2nd that would make signing Soriano look a lot better Pierre (ugh... but Hendry will do it) Murton Lee Ramirez Barrett Soriano Jones Cedeno/ Izturis Thus with the current lineup the Cubs are able to put some decent OBP guys ahead of Soriano with the exception of Slappy
  14. Played 2nd again last night, at least for part of the game. Was anyone there? It looked like Bynum started.
  15. How can you say that when every 5th time he comes to the plate it's Katie Bar the Door. :D I thought someone might point out that his OBP is so much higher than his avg.
  16. Since Hendry will still be here this off season and will be under a lot of pressure to win now, I don't see any kind of rebuilding effort that most people here would want. Hendry's first order of business will be to sign Ramirez, assuming he opts out of his current contract. Hendry will offer Pierre arbitration and go from there. Some other GM will probably be dumb enough to give Juan Pierre a long term deal. If not Hendry signs Pierre to a one year/ $8 million with a player option in 08 and a team option in 09. With Pierre still in the fold, Hendry will try to strengthen the starting rotation and win with pitching and defense. The difference being that Lee will be healthy, Murton and Cedeno will get better and Izturis or Jones will have a career year. If Pierre is gone then Pagan gets the CF job until Pie is ready. Hendry will concentrate his efforts on landing one starting pitcher through FA and one by trading away some of his young pitchers. Hopefully Veal will not fall victim but he is definitely someone other teams are likely to ask about. Trading Veal this off season could be a huge mistake in the long run but Hendry won't care because he's trying to save his job. Same holds true for Gallagher though he probably wouldn't be as highly sought after. The NL Central is likely to be pretty weak again next year. The Reds should give back a bunch of the wins they added this year- at least from a historical standpoint they should. The Astros lineup is questionable and they lose Clemens and Pettite. The Cards are not the team they once were. They still have Pujols and a rapidly aging Rolen but the rest of their lineup is junk. Milwaukee should be the preseason favorite on the basis of their young talent but they always seem to find their way to mediocrity. As a result, Hendry will not see the need to really do anything overly dramatic. He won't trade Zambrano, Lee or Barrett which is what it would take to rebuild. Purple Monkey ashtray- a Simpson's reference to reflect the fact that no one reads past the first paragraph of a long post. So basically it's going to take improvement from all the youngsters, a career year from a vet and good health to right the ship. Not the best plan to be sure but better than usual for an organization that has always hoped for the best.
  17. I was mostly right except for Barrett starting which moved everyone else down a spot.
  18. With Eyre out that means Howry will have to pitch 15 days in a row unless Baker gets fired before then.
  19. I wonder how many more times Clemens will get beaned this season. It seems like people were afraid to do it because of his HOF credentials and blah blah blah. Now that Mateo has done it I bet Clemens gets drilled at least a few more times this season. At least I hope so.
  20. I wonder if MLB has a rule against the Manager doing play by play?
  21. What happened to Eyre? I heard Len say he hurt his leg but missed that part of the game.
  22. Would the Cubs move Prior to the 60 day DL to open up a spot on the 40 man roster? What if Baker starts Ramirez and he gets another leg injury? Ramirez's season would be cut short thus decreasing the chances of him opting out of his contract. I will be stunned if Neifi Perez doesn't start today's game. Pierre Theriot Ramirez Nevin Murton Pagan Perez Blanco Miller who am I kidding? Switch Perez and The riot
  23. Lost in all the Theriot/ Fontenot discussion is the fact that the Cubs derostered Fontenot and have not seen fit to put him back on the 40 man over seriously consider promoting him. In a perfect world he could replace Perez. Perhaps next season Hendry will be able to dump Perez somewhere but that may be wishful thinking.
  24. After sifting through this thread I think the misunderstanding regarding Hendry comes from the creation of this site from a combination of the ESPN and Cubs.com boards etal. When Hendry was hired, most people were very optimistic about him because he was preceived as the guy who had built what had become a very good farm system. He also managed to distance himself from the disappointing 2002 season. When Hendry hired Baker there was a pretty even split between people that liked the move and people that hated it. Anyone who went by Baker's reputation liked it. Anyone that took the time to research or listen to Giants fans was skeptical. Until this year people have been able to distinguish between Hendry and Baker in terms of their affect on the team. People were willing to believe that Hendry had to be smarter than he seemed because of the one sided trades that he made in 2003- 2004. It has only been since the end of 2004 that most people have been holding Hendry accountable for the teams he's built. In that sense Cubbiechris is right that most people had a positive opinion about Hendry. Since no one is still reading at this point I'd like to add that I went to a water park today and I've decided that I really miss the concept of modesty. It got me thinking that there really should be Bikini inspectors or perhaps a test to pass before appearing in public.
  25. I guess you must have missed The Sex Pistols getting beat by Genesis. Yes, that Genesis. The people that voted chose a mountain of formulaic pop crap over a band that produced one of the best albums ever.
