  1. Not all knock offs are bad. I have a knock off Taylormade 3 wood that I absolutely love. But you shouldn't have to spend $1000 for a set of irons. I need to get new grips. Anybody know where I could get some half cord grips? I haven't seen any out here in a long time.
  2. Sutcliffe was a big part of 2 division championships. Was that worth Joe Carter? Hard to say considering how much 1984 helped change expectations for the franchise. Williams was not worth Palmeiro.
  3. So the Rangers get 3 pitchers for Blalock? Seems like they should be sending something else to Cleveland.
  4. Things you can say to Soriano that are OK: "I find your effort lacking" "try catching the apple, rickets, or we'll replace you with Corncob over there." "hiss"
  5. Is it the helmet? It makes him look goofy.
  6. I don't care about stolen bases but I'd like to see players be able to score from 2nd on a base hit or first on a double.
  7. if you truly believe that, you're in for a disappointing next six seasons. I do and I am. Which is why I've decided to get ahead of the trend and start hating him now.
  8. Without looking it up, I'd say yes simply because The Cubs sent the statuesque Cliff Floyd out there last year compared to Fukudome who has CF type range that alone has to make a big difference.
  9. Something is clearly wrong with Soriano. He's not running well at all. Considering that being able to run is about 35% of what makes him valuable at all, it's worth commenting on. The dart line was a little harsh. Didn't Soriano hit a 2 run HR earlier in the game? I thought one of the announcers mentioned that and Brenly saying something like "He's not out there for his defense and you hope he outhits his mistakes." Did Soriano say anything like "Yeah, I should have had that one. I let the team down." ?
  10. If you get hit by a car, do you get mad at the car or at the driver? Hendry is the one that wanted him and he always gets his man- just a few years after his man stopped being good. They weren't going to play Pie, so Edmonds isn't taking time away from Pie. I don't really care if he takes a few dozen ABs away from Reed Johnson. I don't like Edmonds but he has a long way to go to be the most hated Cub ever. Current Cubs I hate more than Edmonds: Soriano Marquis All time in no particular order: Juan Pierre Paul Rueschel Davy Rosello Larry Bowa Roosevelt Brown Jeff Fassero
  11. They probably would think of the Cards as a bigger rival since they were the 2 best NL East teams during the 80s. Actually, the rivalry could become better now as both teams (hopefully) look to be good for the next 3-4 years.
  12. HRs and fan interference. Nothing else. Have this during the playoffs and get rid of the useless extra umpires that have no idea what they're supposed to be doing and never get in position to make the calls they're supposed to make.
  13. Part of the reason for the defined roles is that a manager has to be mindful of what he'll be able to do the next 2 games. If Marmol pitches 2 innings and saves the game that's great today but will he still be available tomorrow? By pitching him 1 inning in each game he could potentially affect the outcome in 2 games instead of 1. Where I object to the defined roles is, for example, not bringing Marmol in during the 6th inning with the bases loaded because he's the 8th inning guy. Eventually, some team is going to have success with the "closer by committee" model. Old timey baseball types cringe at this prospect but that has more to do with the committee than the concept. Closer by committee worked just fine for the 1990 Reds mostly because they had 3 guys that had great stuff.
  14. Take the money you were going to spend on a new driver and spend it on a couple of lessons instead. Of course it's going to mean trusting that the PGA pro knows what he's talking about and actually doing what he says but in the long run it will be worth it. If lessons are are not a viable option, trying shortening your backswing. This will make your swing more compact and give you more control. Don't worry about a loss of power since making more solid contact will be much better than any loss of distance. Why isn't their a stickied Golf thread?
  15. I was listening to the game on XM radio and the Pirates announcers were saying that Soriano had to be hurt. How deep was Lee's flyball? They seemed sure he'd score if he was healthy.
  16. If the minors are all about player development- as they should be-then stressing the fundamentals should be at the top of the priority list. There's absolutely no excuse for system guys to be weak fundamentally.
  17. Looking at all the OF that have moved ahead of him on the depth chart it's hard to imagine why they still want him there. Add in that they have the croner OF spots locked up for another 4 years and I'm more optimistic that they will move him somewhere, especially with the success of Marmol. Perhaps they think its already too late?
  18. Pujols may well be dead in 15 years if he doesn't get his Medicare shipments in time. Would that somehow prevent the Cubs from signing him?
  19. Death penalty? It is Texas after all. Here it's mostly Oriole and Yankee fans. They don't have much to say about the Cubs sucking these days.
  20. Gary Varsho Lloyd McClendon Terry Francona Rick Monday Mel Hall Rick Rueschel
  21. 1. Anyone heard anything about how Camp looks at SS? A LH SS/ utility inf would be intriguing 2. Why is Colvin not playing CF anymore? If it's because they have Fuld that's a pretty dumb reason. 3. With Harvey demoted to Daytona, does he have a chance to breakEarl Cunningham's record for most years spent in A ball? 4. Speaking of Harvey, if he struggles at Daytona or struggles after returning to AA, do they finally send him to EST to make him a pitcher?
  22. I think Marquis can and will be traded soon. This is the time of year when teams have pitching injuries or know what they have already and what they need. Marquis is a decent innings eater and would actually fill a need for teams like the Orioles, Padres, Mariners and of course the Rangers. On a semi related note, I was watching The Natural the other day and Marquis reminds me a lot of Fowler, the ace of the Knights pitching staff. He also looks a lot like Bivens.
