  1. After all that he didn't come to the game last night. I think the kids have pretty much forgotten about it.
  2. I think people remember the way it ended and forget everything else regarding Steve Stone. Brenly is slowly getting better to where he hardly bothers me, which is all I ask from an announcer.
  3. Doubt it unless someone goes on the 60 day DL. He's not on the 40 man roster. They'd probably prefer one of the LHP. Of course they could always DFA Marquis.
  4. What round did the Cubs take Theriot? It sure beats having to pay bench guys $2-4 million for what a homegrown guy can provide for league minimum.
  5. It seems like he's been playing mostly 2nd base. Last time I checked he was hitting .295 but I'm not sure about the important stats. updated line .314/ .354/ .477 .831 2 Hrs 9 BBs 38 K  Those numbers aren't bad but is the PCL a huge hitters league again this year? The walk/ K ratio needs to get better.
  6. Though he might have been in a position to overhear a conversation between piniella and someone else about Pie. You'd be surprised what you overhear as a waiter. That's how I learned that Ted Kennedy lacked character.
  7. If you play a lot, spend the extra money for a good pair. Back when I worked at a Golf Course and played 4-5 times a week I had a pair of Dry Joy GXs that lasted about 5 years. They were very comfortable and legitimately waterproof.
  8. Did Spears come over from the Orioles org.? If he's the guy I'm thinking of he was blocked at Delmarva by another SS "prospect" who also played for Tenn last year. As far as Spears' defense, if its the guy I'm thinking of I saw him play about a half dozen times and saw nothing particularly noteworthy about his defense good or bad. I thought he filled in a little at 3rd at Delmarva but I only saw him play 2nd.
  9. Yes, that's his primary defensive problem. AZ Phil hypothesized that he was ok unless he had time and thought about the throw. If that's all it is, it's not a big deal imo. I would call this Dylan Johnston syndrome...he had the *exact* same problem at SS...the powers that be tried to fix it for 2 years, then gave up an moved him to the outfield. Sounds more like David Kelton.
  10. It's a simple formula: be lefthanded+stay healthy+get some people out= long MLB career if you're not lefthanded: pitch lots of innings+ stay healthy= long MLB career
  11. I wasn't trying to guilt him into anything. I was letting him know what would happen if he didn't do what he was supposed to do. We're 3/4 of the way through the season. He's played and batted in every game. By now he knows that he's supposed to bat when it's his turn. I didn't know if he realized what would happen if he didn't do what he was supposed to do, what he had done and done somewhat successfully (he did have 1 hit and has drawn his share of walks) for over a month.
  12. If he wants to play I'm going to let him. I wasn't mad at him at the time so much as disappointed. I'm willing to give him another chance. However, he does, I think, need to make peace with his teammates and convince him that they can count on him.
  13. We bat all the kids that show up so we don't have any subs. The coach of the other team could have helped a lot by letting us just skip his spot in the order. I was disappointed that he didn't step up and do the right thing given the circumstances. I think he felt that it was better to teach the kid a lesson about commitment to a team than to let him off the hook. I suspect he also didn't want to risk losing the game.
  14. I wouldn't say that was identical at all. If he had tried and failed I would have been glad that he tried. I think the other kids would have been supportive too. They were mad that he wouldn't even try.
  15. If you were there I'd expect you to handle it and I'd be OK with whatever you decided. If he's not having fun than maybe he should try a different sport. Up until last night he seemed like he was enjoying being part of the team.
  16. Yeah, I get that. We have a league where we don't keep score and if I had to it over again I'd put him in that league. I agree that this league is about instruction and I don't really care all that much about winning or losing. At the same time though, he has to understand that he can't just do whatever he wants without it affecting other people.
  17. The managers pick the pitchers. Even MLB isn't dumb enough to use fan voting for pitchers.
  18. If they do this it will be Hart? Ascanio hasn't been down long enough has he? Even though it doesn't make a lot of sense, I see them sending Hoffpauir down before Fontenot as it gives more flexibility for the patented Piniella double switch.
  19. Mark today down as the day ESPN got something right.
  20. We might be the only team in history to have the DH bat first. Yankees with Damon, no? That guy that played for the Blue Jays and is now in the HOF
  21. You don't think Pie could put up a .750 ops?
  22. Maybe, but I couldn't think of anything else. I was trying to give him a choice and under the circumstances I did the best I could. The rest of the kids got along with him OK before this. I don't believe his mother forced him to play as it seems like a pretty big inconvenience for her to get him to games. He is a little afraid of the ball but he had already batted once in the game. By then it was a different pitcher that wasn't throwing as hard as the first one.
  23. Here's something I've never seen in 6 years coaching Little league. Last inning, bases loaded, tying run at the plate. The opposing pitcher can't find the plate. The kid who's supposed to bat is hiding behind the dugout. I yell over from 3rd base and they tell me he won't bat. I went over to talk to him I said- as nicely as I can "We need you to bat now. The worst thing that can happen, you strike out. I promise no one will get mad." He justs shakes his head, crying "if you don't bat you're automatically out and you'll be letting everyone down" starts crying even more So the umpire calls him out and we lose the game. Needless to say the rest of the kids were really pissed and it was all I could do to get them to stop letting him have it verbally. So if this kid shows up at the next game, what should I do?
  24. Watching the highlights last night- game wasn't on here- I can see why the Padres wanted someone else in CF.
