  1. 1984 is when things changed. Before 84 you could walk up and get a ticket to any game any time of the season. Before 84 the ushers almost encouraged people to trade up so the stands wouldn't look as empty on TV. The 84 team didn't barely win, they dominated. They gave Cub fans a taste of winning and things really haven't been the same since. There was nothing "loveable" about the teams of the early 90s. If you want to say that '98 was the turnaround year I could see that point too.
  2. I completely disagree. Other teams have their own scouts. Why would they care what the Cubs think? It might make them think they can get Murton on the cheap and perhaps reduce offers but Hendry doesn't seem to be willing to sell low on Murton otherwise he would have already done so.
  3. Have they said how long Soriano is likely to be out? If they expect him back in 15 days then it makes a little more sense to promote someone they don't mind never playing. Why bring up Murton only to send him down again in 2 weeks. If they aren't going to play Patterson at all, I would have preferred they call up Fox. At least he could be an emergency catcher and has some pop. Right now Cedeno is the #1 PH option from the right side. Yikes.
  4. I have a theory that very few players actually hustle. Those that do only do so because they are on the fringe of being cut or it's the playoffs and they want to leave the impression that they always play hard. You could also argue that players that hustle are being selfish- they want to pad their stats by legging out infield hits.
  5. Except for Fontenot they all play at least 1 other position. Even he played a little SS during ST. Not that this makes this move good or anything.
  6. For that to happen Crisp has to play well enough that Hendry still wants him, Pie has to play bad enough to be a legit bust and Murton has to continue to hit despite the symbollic football to the groin he just got from the org. Also everyone has to stay healthy. I don't believe Hendry will give up on Pie that soon. I also don't believe he was ever that high on Crisp. He may be a switch hitter but does he "play th game the right way?"
  7. I'm not so sure. They could always promote Kroeger as the extra OF and play Derosa in LF with Fontenot and Cedeno splitting time at 2nd depending on match ups. promoting kroeger would make no sense. If they traded Murton for someone that didn't need to be on the 40 man that would open a space for Kroeger. Promoting him makes sense if they feel that Soriano will be back soon and the call up will only be a placeholder anyway. I expect to see Derosa in LF on a regular basis with Ward maybe getting a start or 2. Maybe promoting Patterson is a sign that a trade is already in the works.
  8. I'm not so sure. They could always promote Kroeger as the extra OF and play Derosa in LF with Fontenot and Cedeno splitting time at 2nd depending on match ups.
  9. There is no earthly reason for Piniella to play Johnson in LF. Against LH he'll want him in CF. Against RH he can play Fontenot at 2nd and Derosa in LF or he could bite the bullet defensively and run Ward out there. Murton may very well sit against RH pitchers but at least he offers a better RH bat off the bench then Blnaco or Cedeno/Theriot.
  10. So if the Cubs win the WS this year it becomes OK for Pie to learn on the job next year? You don't think they'll be pressure to repeat? Someone else said that Pie was a black hole last night and he needed to be benched. Somehow the rest of the team managed to score 9 runs. If you're going to make decisions on small sample sizes then this logic should also apply. Finally, with Soriano out, Pie will be the only guy not hitting so they will be able to carry him.
  11. They only thing I worry about with Fukudome is the Japanese notions of what a player should and should not do based on where they bat in the lineup. For example, Fukudome didn't steal bases because he batted 3rd and middle of the order hitters just don't do that in Japan.
  12. Stfu you nerd to a guy with 20k posts is a poor start on this board This post makes me nostalgic for Cubs.com. "I swear I'm not a troll"! Isn't that the first thing they teach you in troll school?
  13. Without looking at the results I'm guessing that it's 99% for option 2 and that one guy- the one that voted against WWII purely on principal- picking option 1.
  14. I think Dusty will take the high road. He's employed and has good reason to be excited about his current team. I think he'll go the blah blah.. that's in the past dude.. blah blah bizarre fishing reference route.
  15. I seem to remember that George Brett had very pedestrian minor league numbers. I'd bet there are lots more pitchers. I heard some Dodgers minor league guy talking about how he advised Orel Hershieser to quit baseball unless he developed some sort of plus pitch.
  16. Pitching depth should mean that it's OK if a starter struggles because there are other effective pitchers that can bail him out if that happens. Last Night was a good example of that. Hill's control problems aren't going to get any better by pitching who knows when in mop up duty. So does "What's best for Hill" mean a trip to Iowa? Seems like he'd get at least 3 more starts before that happens.
  17. Be careful what you wish for. With Theriot seemingly in the doghouse I could see Piniella putting Pie 2nd before he goes ahead and benches him for Johnson. That's what Dusty Baker would do. Except that Baker would give him 1 game. Piniella would give him about 4.
  18. A lot of the standings are upside down right now. The O's whom practically everyone picked to finish last have only lost 1 game last time I checked. In recent years teams have been able to dig themselves out of holes.
  19. It's about 25 years too late for this idea. During the late 70s / early 80s there were guys with speed and guys that hit for power and very few were able to do both. These days there are a lot more power hitters that can run well. If they moved the fences back bunting would be an even dumber strategy than it is now. Every stadium would be like Coors field. There'd be fewer HRs but there would be more XBH and more potential for runs. There would also be more dump singles as OF would have to play deeper to try to cut off the enormous gaps.
  20. Pignatello can stink for less and be sent down if necessary.
  21. Come on. Everyone knows that Jeter can just will the Yankees to not make errors.
  22. In light of recent events with the sniper fire, making up health care stories etc. I thought it was worth bumping this thread. Any of the Clinton supporters still feel the same way now?
  23. That's 5 more words than I expected on Theriot.
  24. If only there was a way for baseball players to get their hands clean. Sadly, that technology is unavailable in Southern California. Someday...
  25. I think that would be in doubt this year. The OBP different may make up for the power difference. What if you could trade Soriano for a good young SS but still had to pay part of Soriano's contract? How much of it is too much to get rid of him? The next problem is who has an extra SS that would actually want Soriano. Soriano,Cedeno and $25 million for Khalil Greene? Soriano would still have over $100m left on his deal. I think it's safe to say that SD would laugh right in our stupid faces. That's weird. I meant to type $75 million
