  1. WOW. Felix Pie is doomed. 6 of those guys made it at least briefly to MLB. I bet most systems would take that ratio.
  2. He's in camp as I watched him throw a bullpen the other day and looked good. Yeah but how did Petrick look
  3. I pretty much hate most announcers but what exactly makes Bob Brenly great? His stories seem forced and take too long. His analysis is pretty milk toast which would be ok except that his partner is not Mr. excitement either. There's something about Bob Brenly's tone of voice that is completely uncompelling. The nicest thing you can say about Brenly is that he's not Jeff Brantly dumb. Still, I'd rather have an idiot like Sutcliffe than Boring Bob Brenly.* *I reserve the right to retract this statement about 2 innings into the next game Sutcliffe does.
  4. Agree with this part Bob Brenly is a bore. Since Len Kasper is so low key it would be much better to have someone *like* Steve Stone to liven things up.
  5. Do the Cubs play at Camden Yards thid year?
  6. I think it started with Tommy Herr and the 80s Cards teams.
  7. I think its more a matter of there were fewer power pitchers during the 80s than there are now. I can remember a time when 92 was really bringing it and most pitchers worked in the mid 80s. There were more people throwing a screw ball back then too. I think they had to rely more on deception than power. If they could have thrown a 95 mph fastball why would they mess around with gimmicky pitches like the knuck?
  8. Sam Fuld is so gritty, he can sand wood with his bare hands.
  9. It's a good thing a certain diminutive, gritty, former WS MVP wasn't batting or he would have willed the ball to pop out a half second later.
  10. 'cause he's the CATCHER . . . DUH!! The SS is supposed to bat 8th.
  11. Why do people think that Bush will pardon Clemens?
  12. Why? I'm guessing it has something to do with the idea half the people there are going for the experience and not for the game. I have a Wrigley Field shirt. I see what you're saying but out here nobody says stuff like that about Cub fans.
  13. How long before his pants catch fire?
  14. White vinegar on a salad would be awful. This one time a brand new waiter brought it out to a table by mistake and the woman complained that the shrimp on the salad tasted bad.
  15. I think Gibbons- when he gets back from suspension- will probably play more 1st base. Of course the O's still have markakis which crowds their OF anyway. I don't believe other teams care whether the Cubs think he is good. The fact that he doesn't fit in on the Cubs is good because it's making him available. Whether or not he's good enough to start in LF somewhere I'd say maybe 3-5 teams.
  16. Don't my Cubs history as well as I should I guess. What do you mean? Lee Smith gave up the HR to Steve Garvey that pretty much clinched the '84 playoffs. Jim Frey never forgave Smith so when he became GM he traded Smith to Boston for Calvin Schiraldi and Al Nipper. Schiraldi never recovered from the '86 playoff loss to the Mets and was very bleh as a Cub. Nipper was never any good. The club needed a closer so they traded Palmeiro and others for Mitch Williams. After a couple years they signed Dave Smith who's out pitch- the astrodome- somehow wasn't effective at Wrigley. Then they brought in Goose Gossage-as usual 5 years after he stopped being any good. Meanwhile, Lee Smith remained a pretty effective reliever. Had they kept him perhaps they could have used those resources elsewhere instead of trying to chase down a "proven closer".
  17. Larry Biittner
  18. I remember being a kid and wondering why anyone ever swung at Sutter's split finger. It was always in the dirt, no one could hit it anyway so why even swing? The Lee Smith trade was probably the worst trade in Cubs history when you take into consideration the ripple effect it had in the organization.
  19. This is nothing new. We knew this was the way it would happen ever since Lieber was signed. Why get upset about Piniella stating what should be obvious to anyone that is paying attention? The Cubs aren't going to go the whole season without a pitching injury and Gallagher would be the 1st call up. Spending a little time at AAA isn't going to hurt him. In the long run it might be better for him because he'll get regular work without the risk of getting overextended.
  20. Here's a tip: don't call Chicago Chi-town- ever. Isn't there already a thread like this stickied somewhere? If not there should be as I'm guessing this is something a lot of people want to know.
  21. I think all of you are missing the point: Why would the Muskat include this gem in her column?
  22. +1 That phrase may take on a new meaning for Clemens once he's found guilty.
  23. yeah good point, those guys definitely don't know what they're doing. it's not like FJM was just voted the best sports blog of 2007. i mean that would generally tend to indicate that people find the site funny and enjoy going back there frequently and reading it, so it's a good thing that people didn't choose it as the best sports blog, or your argument would look pretty silly. This is the first piece I have read from FJM.com and my comment still stands. Maybe they have funny posts, but out of the entries I have read (only this one), it was not good quality or even remotely funny. Ironically, the same guy who claims that the story is full of cliches' piggybacks on almost all of the comments on every Cubs board regarding Theriot. There is no originality saying "Theriot's numbers are terrible." We all know that. And the fact that they were voted best sports blog in '07 means what? Citizen Kane was voted the best movie of all time, and many people can't stand it. In the future it would be stronger if you could actually defend the site yourself, instead of relying on other people's opinions. This wasn't one of their better articles. Read their glossary and if you still don't think its funny then fair enough.
