  1. By the time the Cubs give up on him- assuming he busts- he won't have many prime years to have anything more than a Meh NFL career.
  2. They might be able to do that even without him. The O's are rebuilding and the Jays are an enigma.
  3. Considering that other than HR's, those are worthless stats,...I'd be indifferent, I guess. Let's not go overboard here. Batting average is hardly worthless. Batting Average is a stat that people like Joe Morgan use to show that players like Juan Pierre are good.
  4. I'm wondering, what criteria you guys are using to rate these players? Ceiling? Likelihood of reaching that ceiling? Likelihood of contributing at the ML level? If it's a combination of all these factors which weight more heavily?
  5. Soriano Pie Lee Ramirez Fukudome Soto DeRosa Theriot or Soriano Theriot Fukudome Ramirez Lee Soto DeRosa Pie
  6. Given a choice of these 2 options, which would you rather see batting 2nd? It's not a good choice but barring a trade one of these 2 will in Piniella's eye have to bat 2nd. Pie has more speed and power. Theriot is a little more selective. Theriot is probably a better base stealer and contact hitter. Both have shown the capacity to stink on ice.
  7. To be fair there's a lot going on. A fire in a US Embassy should, I think, be bigger news than a college coping with the aftermath of a tragedy.
  8. Is anyone else struck by the paradox of easing him into the lineup by having him bat 3rd?
  9. I doubt it. They will probably be pretty good, assuming they make (some of) the necessary improvements. I doubt they're picking as high as 14 next year, barring a trade. 10 wins is a reasonable expectation. I don't expect the Green Bay Favres to be as good, the Vikings will be OK and the Lions will be the Lions. The Bears ought to be able to do better against the NFC north and win the division assuming they address O line and safety.
  10. This sends a message to all the other system guys in the org. not to give up on the dream. But that's all it is. Barring injury or a big trade, I can't see a scenario where Fuld makes the 25 man let alone starts in CF. If the Cubs go with 12 pitchers again- which they seem to prefer- that leaves 5 bench spots. Blanco, Ward, Cedeno, Fontenot and Murton probably round out the bench.
  11. Because HE personally called ME out on it. My only response to the validity of the rumor was: If you really believe that this was not a personal attack you should be banned for being the most obtuse person to ever live.
  12. Right on. I don't know why everyone here thinks the Cubs have never even considered having DeRosa play short. I'm sure they've thought of it, and they've probably decided that he'd be a disaster defensively. But if they acquired Roberts and moved DeRosa to the "supersub" role wouldn't they try to find him some PT at SS? I think yes given that he won't get much at either corner OF and they probably don't want him in CF.
  13. he's said about 1000 times that he's not running. if he changes his mind at this point he'd look really, really bad. if you deny it once and then change your mind, that's one thing, but repeatedly saying that you're not a candidate and then running? he'd get killed in the media for that. Just curious....Gore said he was 99% sure for months and months...if he'd decided in December to run, would you have thought the same thing? Maybe you would have..I'm just curious. Good thing he's still looking for manbearpig.
  14. I remember Nate Cornejo but given the depth the Cubs have at lousy pitchers, might be time to upgrade. Alphonso Soriano if he was moved to the middle of the lineup could achieve that batistaesque season. Finally, Adam Dunn. baseball is officially fun again.
  15. What exactly makes someone qualified to be president anyway? The usual measure of this is having been a governor or VP but neither of those are the same as being President. I would also argue that experience and qualified does not equal competence. Herbert Hoover, for example, was a well respected, intelligent businessman, organizer and engineer who won in a landslide. His presidency was pretty much a disaster.
  16. You mean we can actually watch games? #-o good to know.
  17. uh whatever dude, obama has the most liberal voting record in the senate!!! [/karlrove] Voting record is what keeps most senators from getting elected. But there's really no way of knowing how their perspective will change once they become President. The last senator to get elected President was JFK.
  18. Did you mean he was going to vote for Clinton? If the thinks Obama has a better chance of beating McCain, why would he vote Obama? If McCain wins he gets to run again in 2012. If Obama wins the Republicans hopefully can come up with an actual conservative to run against him. Of course that assumes that 4 years is long enough for the voters to stop blaming the Republican party for Bush's presidency. It also assumes that they'll be able to find someone that is actually interesting. McCain is far from ideal but he's probably more what this country needs ie someone that can bring the 2 sides closer together. If McCain loses however I doubt I'll mind Obama too much so long as he's more of a centrist once he gets elected.
  19. I was listening to Steve Czabn (sp?) on xm 142 and he was saying that, even though he's a Republican, he is going to vote in the Democratic primary (Va. has open primaries) for Obama. Figuring that Obama has a better chance of beating McCain than Clinton does. In other words, its 3rd and long so the Republicans are lining up in the shotgun and are going to hand off to Dennis Gentry then punt after he gets stopped for no gain.
  20. Unless they include Pie in the package to get Roberts or to get that pitcher from the Jays that's not Brad Penny. Under those conditions Patterson would be a placeholder until Colvin is deemed ready. I doubt it happens though.
  21. Unless perhaps if they traded Pie as part of a package for a serious upgrade somewhere else. Patterson brings strong defense and would be a decent placeholder until Colvin is ready. Of course there's no evidence that Hendry is even considering an upgrade at SS so the point is moot.
  22. I'm going to pretend I didn't just read that... So it's the guy from green acres. I didn't realize he had a last name.
