  1. If we accept that Muskat= Cubs org. this may actually be encouraging in a number of ways. It could mean that they see an upgrade in the OF as more of a priority. It could also mean that they are trying not to appear desparate and can at least try to avoid overpaying. This kind of statement really doesn't do anything to prevent them from pursuing Arod or some other obviously better SS. On the other hand, if you were part of the Cubs org. you'd neither tell Muskat anything nor would you value her opinion.
  2. Who is CubbieMan? The Cubs' version of GreenMan?
  3. SS has the greatest room for improvement and an OF would be easier to acquire at the trade deadline if needed than a good SS. Also, the Cubs can get at least avg. production out of the Jones/ Murton Platoon in RF if need be. If Pie and Soto live up to expectations the addition of an offensive SS will make the lineup strong.
  4. Some radio station did a version of Silent Night to the tune of "Exit Lights"
  5. Would they play "What's new [expletive] Cat?" every time he comes into a game?
  6. If Dempster is so bad, why hasn't anyone spray painted "sucks" under the road signs for Dempster St. ? Hah!
  7. If McGahee is playing in Mexico (again) why is he playing 3rd and not C, OF or 2nd base? It seems to me that his best chance of making the 25 man is as a corner utility guy/ 3rd catcher.
  8. At the very least he's behind Pie and (probably) Patterson. That they sent him to the AFL suggests that they'd like to get an idea as to how far.
  9. I prefer Elephant graveyard of former Cubs.
  10. If the Cubs don't upgrade from outside the organization, I'd bet that Theriot starts at SS opening day but that Piniella will not hesitate to yank him in favor of Cedeno. I base that on Piniella liking Theriot on the one hand but wanting to win trumps all else.
  11. How much did the Mulder trade undermine that notion?
  12. Suppose the Cubs had a 4th starter that was more reliable- reliable enough to go with a 4 man rotation in the playoffs. Potentially, that means that Zambrano stays in game 1 and the Cubs *could* have gone on to win. This probably changes the team's mindset going into game 2 and maybe they don't press as much against the steaming pile that is Doug Davis. How many of you can honestly say you liked the Cubs chances in the playoffs based on their pitching? The offense is certainly a priority unless you're confident that Soto and Pie can provide better production from their respective positions. Getting back to the original topic, The Cubs are going to have to get cheap production from somewhere. It therefore makes sense that they upgrade RF and SS and go with Pie and Soto knowing that at least their defense will be a plus even if they don't hit much.
  13. Right. People don't hate Michigan because of their ugly helmets but they do hate the ugly helmets. The D'Backs couldn't sell out their home playoff games. They have to be the worst 90 win team in MLB history. They somehow have owned the Cubs for their entire existence. The fact that they're an expansion team that's already won a WS is just a garnish.
  14. You could also mention the Bears stinking and Illinois losing to lowly Iowa on the dumbest penalty ever called in college football.
  15. In fairness, Fontenot also can play 3rd but on a team that has Aramis Ramirez starting that also has DeRosa that's not really saying much. The Cubs would be better off with someone that could either play SS or had more power.
  16. Trade Phillip Hughes and Bobby Abreu to the Cubs for Aramis Ramirez to replace Arod after he signs with the Cubs.
  17. 1984- It was such a fun season and the Cubs had what looked like enough to win it all 2003- for reasons previously stated 1989- I had very low expectations but I also lived with 2 Sox fans who were glued to every second of the NLCS and let me know what happened. I don't think I even watched the last 2 games of the series. 2007- same as 89 except that there are no Diamondback fans- anywhere.
  18. What? Once I built a fort out of the cushions from the couch with the idea that I would live in it. Then it collapsed as soon as I got in. Should I be mad? There's absolutely no reason why a couch cushion fort shouldn't last forever.* *A house of cards is probably a better metaphor for the 2007 Cubs but it seemed unnatural to use the words "Cards".
  19. "You've brought me an All American boy. Now go get me a juvenile delinquent that can hit"- Leo the Lip
  20. Cuban buying the Cubs would increase the value of all MLB franchises. The Cubs being a perennial contender would mean big ratings in the post season which equals more potential TV revenue.
  21. Realistically, this team had no chance of winning a 7 games series against any of the AL teams. Soto proves he's the real deal, Pie lives up to expectations and Mark prior wins comeback POTY = the Cubs win the NL Central again. That's just one scenario which gives them a much better chance than this season. The Cubs have fewer holes to fill this offseason than they have in recent memory. Hendry has shown that he can address 1 or 2 problems in an offseason. If he gets a real SS and 1 more pitcher they'd have a better chance of winning the Central than anyone else.
  22. With Pie getting a shot at CF I see the Cubs keeping Jones and platooning him with Murton in RF as insurance in case Pie flames out. Jones is by no means ideal but he is a decent complimentary player that can be moved once Pie has shown he can play. If Soto starts and continues to hit that will be a big boost to the offense and will relieve pressure on Pie. I don't believe Hendry wants to trade Marquis as he provided what he was supposed to provide. Granted, Hendry paid too much.
  23. There's already a thread in polls.
  24. 1. Cubs because they're at home against the worst team in the playoffs (other than themselves) 2. Yankees because of their ridiculous offense and because everyone wants them to lose and lose badly. 3. Phillies because the Angels are too banged up 4. Angels
  25. Doug Davis "They helped me out by swinging at some bad pitches" Alphonso Soriano "They must have had a wicked scouting report" That's the Cubs in a nutshell. Let the cap tipping begin.
