  1. I think Derrek would appreciate a fair offer negotiated in good faith. If we do that, I think we'll keep him.
  2. I like Hoops' ideas except for 2 things. 1) I don't think Wood is going anywhere, even if you give him an extention. I don't think teams want to take that risk. 2) My man-love for Walker doesn't want to see anyone else at 2nd next year. Soriano K's way too much and Kent is old.
  3. Question: is there enough money to sign both Burnett and Millwood next year? Not trying to be a smart@ss, I really don't know what next years' finances look like. If so, I highly endorse their signing (tho I'd rather see Penny instead of Burnett). Now, doing so means we're admitting our highly touted minor-league arms aren't as good as advertised, but I'm willing to do that. In fact, I'd go so far as to say a staff of Prior/Z/Penny/Millwood/Maddux almost guarantees us at least a Wild Card berth next year. One need look no further than those yahoos on Chicago's south side to see the value of a strong, stable rotation. Well, for one thing, the Sammy money will be off the books. And IF (that's a big if, though) Maddux retires, that's another $9 million, so at least $21 million there in total. Nomar is making 8 million this year, I think. If he takes $4 million, theres $25 to play with ($16 million if Maddux stays). We'll have some wiggle room this offseason. I think I'm missing some money somewhere as well. I'm sure one of the more intelligent people will correct me where I omitted someone or made an incorrect contract statement.
  4. Well, he won't have much of a choice. This was his "try out" year. He was auditioning for other teams. Not much of an audition though. He'll have to take what we offer unless some team is willing to take a huge gamble on him. I say offer him another 1 year deal not worth more than 3 or 3.5 mil. I'd even go as far as $4.5 with an automatically vesting option for 2007 based on 500 PA's.
  5. Yes. This is how a healthy Nomar hits. Imagine having that bat in the lineup for (hopefully) 135-145 games or so next year.
  6. Is he still in baseball anymore? Dude has a problem, and he needs help.
  7. How many teams?
  8. These are the same Cub doctors who last year said Prior would be ready for Opening day, then miss a start, then two starts, and then he came back in June. Forgive me if I don't believe much of what the Cubs docs say.
  9. BTW, this league is first-come, first-served. (mods, sorry I'm the only one replying in this thread)
  10. But he dove into the stands for a foul ball!! That should give him a Gold Glove for life!!!!
  11. I'd love to see Sammy in Wrigley one last time, as a final goodbye. People would probably boo him out of the park, but I'd give him a standing ovation.
  12. The problem is, that isn't happening at the moment. He's been getting booed on a regular basis, and you know that has got to rankle. I was talking about when he was with the Cubs, and his desire to reclaim it.
  13. I agree we can find a corner outfielder. Question is can we find two? Unless Lawton is kept or Murton starts we are stuck having to find two corner outfielders for next year. In a weak FA class and not wanting to sell the farm I really think that an outfield of Nomar/Patterson/Giles or Nomar/Patterson/(Kearns or Huff etc.) could put up some acceptable power numbers. While maybe not perfect it will be far better than what we have now. I think that Nomar can easily put up better numbers than Lawton and Murton in Left. But then we have to overpay for a SS who probably won't produce as much as a healthy Nomar. Nomars prodution would be average for a LF'er, plus you're asking him to play a position he's never played before. He could take to it quite well, but the chances are equal that he could be absolutely brutal, too. I'd rather have Nomars numbers at short and abover-average production in left than average to below average production for a LF'er and below average at short. you're not going to find anyone in this offseason better than Nomar at short.
  14. Tough call, really. I think Sammy knows his career is right at the end. He knows he'd be wise to walk away. But then again, having 35,000 people chant your name and cheer your every move on a regular basis has to be pretty addictive. I don't say I'd blame him if he tried to reclaim just a bit of that. But IMO he should retire. Hang 'em up, Sammy. You've had a great career and I look forward to seeing another Cubs hat in Cooperstown.
  15. Not everyone who has ever lost weight has stopped taking steroids. Damn, I can't wait for people to understand this.
  16. But what if you do bankrupt the farm and we don't win next year or the year after? Then we're back in a 7-year stretch of the farm being barren and the Cubs finishing in the 2nd division.
  17. Probably cuz they're black  Yeah. And when I criticize Dusty it's because I secretly hate black people.
  18. I'll say forever that Stone was one of the smartest baseball men I've ever heard. I miss him in the booth. At least when he left for 2 years, there was a chance of him coming back. Now, I very highly doubt I'll hear him in the booth for the Cubs ever again.
  19. Actually the argument does make some sense because you can't know before the fact whether you will have a productive out or a DP. Now if you know your hitters' tendencies to pull or go the other way, or groundball vs. flyball, you can try to figure it out. But at that point you're not guessing anymore. The A's are always looking to use new information. That's what makes them different. Your plan to build a winner by hitting into force outs is very novel. I never said that was a plan. I said give me a bunch of speedy, contact guys. At least with a ground ball, you put it into play. If you have a guy fast enough (like Patterson), odds are they can leg out those slow rollers to short or third. You can't outrun a strikeout. you should try to force the defense to get you out. And if you put the ball into play, if you put it in the right place, at least something came out of your out, instead of nothing.
  20. It's nice, but totally unneccessary. He should be on an operating table ASAP to get him ready for next season. A frayed labrum sounds like something that would land him on the DL to start next year. I want him ready and completely healthy for Opening Day.
  21. I'm not a fan of having 30+ year old guys move to a position they never played before (unless it's something really easy to play like 1B). Remember Walker's adventure in left last year, and Todd Hundley's adventure when he was with the Dodgers? LF can be very difficult to play for an infielder. Keep him at SS.
  22. I agree totally. You cant lose either way, assuming you lose Neifi and have Cedeno as the backup. Cedeno and Branyan as the main INF backups would be pretty good, IMO.
  23. Don't let yourself get sucked in. They'll rip your heart out and stomp on it.
  24. To do anything, the Cubs need to get hot. Oakland A's hot, and fast. But this team is far too streaky to do anything of the like.
  25. Or good coaching, something the Cubs sorely lack. Yeah, LaRussa goes and swings the bat for these scrubs. gmab TLR + Macias = All Star I'm not saying a coach plays for them, but they do have an impact. They're teachers. They teach. If they didn't have an effect nobody would have coaches, or am I wrong in that line of thinking? No need to be a smartass about it. LaRussa's the hitting instructor?? I never said "a good manager." I said good COACHING. There are more coaches on the team than just the manager. HOW much does tis have to do with todays GAME THREAD? Just carrying on a convo. If you don't like it, don't read it.
