  1. It's been made to be. A team retiring a players number is second only to a HOF induction in terms of the size of the honor. To issue the number of a former player who happened to be your franchise player and a sure-fire HOF'er to a mediocre pitcher is a slap in the face.
  2. What kind of a message does this send to other players? "Come play for the Cubs. Bust your ass for us and be the face of the franchise and be the only reason anyone is at the stadium for many, many seasons and we'll run you down every chance we get for a few indiscretions!" How do we know for certain that, say, 10 years from now the Cubs aren't doing this to DLee or Zambrano?
  3. They shouldn't rush Pie. Because, you know, rushing Patterson had such fantastic results.
  4. Do you mean in terms of talent, or terms of "probably won't get in because of steroid accusations?"
  5. And we could end up parting with some good talent just to have Boras pull the same crap with us. No thanks. Not that I wouldn't love to have him in the rotation, but not for the price the Red Sox had to pay.
  6. I LOL'ed at that when I pictured them holding hands and skipping in their superhero capes That so needs to be a photoshop in someone's sig.
  7. That's about best-case scenario. Best case scenario is that some legal-minded individual files a case contesting the contract on the grounds that Hendry is not of sound mind or body. Ok, that's best case scenario.
  8. This is what I was saying the other day about this team having far too many "ifs" for them to have any sort of a chance next year.
  9. What healthy pitcher will sign for less than 3 years these days? I hope we aren't done and that a trade for a better #2 option is still availabe (ie Brad Penny) but my fear is that it's not. And Lilly, Marquis and Cotts aren't exactly what I had in mind for strengthening our pitching staff. Sori OTOH I'm counting down the days before we can see him in Cubs pinstripes. This is what pisses me off about this signing. We could have passed on Marquis and swung a trade for Penny, using that money to get him to rework his contract or even give it to the Dodgers. Instead, we sign a guy who completely sucks for more money than I'll ever make in 10 lifetimes.
  10. This is..... it's...... I have no words. I'm speechless. That money could have easily gone toward something else. Anything else. Cripes, they're paying Marquis $7 million a year to suck? Hell, I'll do it for 1/10th that. Note to Jim: Spending money alone won't improve this team. It's spending it WISELY. You obviously haven't figured that out yet.
  11. I actually think Marshall could wind up being the better of the two. Do it, Jim!
  12. Long time no see Outshined! :D Honestly, 19 out of 20 seasons where his batting average was over .300, and that's pretty darned impressive. Let's take Ty Cobb for example here, he hit over .300 for 24 consecutive seasons. Even in the era of weak pitching we have today, no one will ever do that again. It's not like he had some inflated OBP built from intentional walks, people pitching around him, lineup protection, or places where the foul pole is 300 feet away. He worked in an era when baseball was played in cavernous places and where a high home run total was 10. I think Gywnn should be able to get in on the first try. I don't see why there is any doubt at all about Gwynn. As I stated before: 3,000 hits = HOF, no matter what era you play in.
  13. Alex made an error. A horrible error. Did it cost the Cubs the game? No. And it certainly didn't cost the playoffs. He wasn't the pitcher. If Prior had kept his cool, the Marlins wouldn't have rallied and beat them. And in Game 7, which many people seem to forget is the game that actually lost the playoffs for the Cubs, Kerry Wood sucked. Big time. When someone convinces me that the pitchers would have done better without the error, then maybe I'll concede Alex was the bad guy. Until then, ain't gonna happen. The Cubs as a team lost, not Alex, not Bartman, the Cubs as a team. Period. Look at it this way: Yes, Prior imploded. However, if Gonzo turns the DP and doesn't drop it like the spaz he was, we're out of the inning up 3-1 and Prior most likely doesn't start the 9th. So in a way, yes, you can blame AGonz more than Prior. (yes, I broke my own rule of posting more than once in this thread. I'm off to go vomit with rage over Game 6.)
  14. We could sign Huff and then trade for pitching, couldn't we? Do we still have the interest in Westbrook?
  15. Unfortunately with this team bench options do matter. Neifi, Macias, and Bynum were all supposed to be "bench options." Look how that turned out.
  16. I was holding out hope that nobody would sign him just on principle.
  17. Put me on the Liebs bandwagon.
  18. Couldn't agree more. Izturis should rot in the 8 hole. You mean the 8 hole, in Cleveland. That would be even better.
  19. absolutely, a pinchhitter, spells guys at 3 positions and DH. Makes a lot of sense to me. If this is how he's used, I'm ok with it. If he takes playing time away from Murton (aside from the rare day off), I'll want to storm Tribune Tower with a pitchfork and torch.
  20. Couldn't agree more. Izturis should rot in the 8 hole.
  21. Yeah, I really don't have issue with the signing. I just felt like being a smartass.
  22. I'll always remember the day we signed Daryl Ward. Fifty years from now I'll be telling my grandkids the story of the Cubs 2007 World Series Chamipionship season and telling them Daryl Ward was the key to it all. Their eyes will fill with wonderment as I tell them about the day of the December 7, 2006 signing of the second coming of Babe Ruth.
  23. Yes! Penny for Jacques!! Hey, I can dream, can't I?
