  1. Jon Madden analyzes baseball now? 99% of the time you score more runs than the other team, you win the game. I wonder if Fred has stats on that.
  2. What are you going to be in DR for? Sounds like an interesting trip.
  3. I bought my Nomar jersey on a trip to Wrigley in 05.
  4. I agree...Atleast we know there is no way in hell we can be as bad as last season...Im a surprised with all Hendry has done so far, and its only a day after thanksgiving..There will be plenty more to come, especially around the winter meetings...Only if Jason Schmidt accepts the 3 year/45 mil contract Hendry offered him...Id prolly cry then I dont know what.. Never say never. This is the Cubs, after all, a team that has made losing their forte. This team has found ways to lose games and piss away seasons like no other team in the history of American baseball. That being said, however, I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm glad we signed Soriano (though the jury is still out on that contract), and I'm glad we have a hard-nosed, no-nonsense manager in Piniella that we've needed so desperately for years now.
  5. another quick rule of thumb Anytime you take what a baseball GM or any high ranking corporate official says to a reporter as truth as to what he is thinking, you are the one that is dumb. I might not have said it that way, but this is definitely true. The only real evidence as to what a GM's philosophy is is the team he puts on the field. There's plenty of evidence of Hendry screwing up there without going to quotes. I wasn't necessarily referring to the article. I think Hendry's overall body of work will back me up.
  6. Quick rule of thumb: Any time the question is "Is Hendry really this dumb?", the answer is "yes".
  7. I'd take him for one year only. No incentive-based option years. Just one year period. If he'd take a $4-5 million deal, I'd say yes. Anything more in years or money and I'll pass.
  8. Well, maybe we can make it up with Meche/Wolf/Lily or a trade.
  9. Runs + RBI- HR I think.
  10. We've only improved at one of the outfield spots. Jones is still Jones(and '07 Jones is likely to be worse than '06 Jones) even if he moves to a different position. Also, DeRosa is far from a guarantee to be an upgrade over our 2B production in '06(.274/.326/.411/.737). Nope. 1B = Lee > no Lee RF = Soriano > Jones CF = Jones > Pierre 2B = Derosa > Neifi, Bynum, Walker, Cedeno P = Have already said they are getting 2 more pitchers. And the off-season is not even HALF over yet. I mean my gosh people. Jim is STILL going to go out and get some pitchers, he might even replace Izturis with Lugo. For heavens sake admit we are better and we're not even done yet! I would take Todd Walker over Mark DeRosa any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
  11. Wasn't Russ Grimm a football player? Bronco Nagurski is the best football name. Dick Butkus disagrees You had to be tough with a name like Dick Butkus.
  12. Can you explain why you feel this way? In a market where Pierre gets 10 million, why do you think Jones value at 4 or 5 a year 'isn't all that high'? The Cubs can market his mainstream numbers. He was the 3rd best producing RF in the NL last year. My point is that if you attempt to trade Jones now, you won't get as much for him as there are more desireable bats on the market right now. If you wait until those bats are signed, then Jones becomes more valuable than he is now to a team that lost out on the FA OF they wanted.
  13. While there are still other bats out there, Jones' value isn't all that high. I think we should wait till January or February and then talk with teams that were looking for an OF bat who got shut out in the FA market. I think his value will be highest then.
  14. I knew the stories that Hendry was interested in the best player on the market were too good (and out of character) to be true. Hey. I'm no fan of Hendry, but he got Soriano. That's not too bad.
  15. Hiram Bocachica.
  16. I'd welcome Walker back with open arms. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like he's coming back.
  17. Kaplan also quoted unnamed agents as saying that Hendry's presentation was the best he'd ever seen and that Hendry's rep among players (past and present) helped seal the deal. Lou was active in this recruiting process and also met with Soriano separately. Hendry says he'll be pursuing pitching. As I posted earlier, there's some speculation that they wanted to sign Soriano early to boost credibility and improve there chances with potential FAs, such as Schmidt. Wow, if this is true, who is this man and what the hell has he done with Jim Hendry? Light a fire under someone's ass and you tend to get good results.
  18. Because that worked out so well when we did it with Maddux. You know, a lot of experts would agree that Maddux and Schmidt are different pitchers. Schmidt is also on the wrong side of 30 and is nearing his inevitable career decline.
  19. Apparently all the money they made last year didn't make they play hard. I sure as hell hope Lou makes them. Dusty didn't give a rip about effort. What's Lou's record when it comes to on-field laziness and lack of fundimentals? Is he quick to fine and/or bench?
  20. Because that worked out so well when we did it with Maddux.
  21. I think there are option years somewhere in there that haven't been announced yet.
  22. In 25AB: .360 .407 .840 1.247 Not bad at all... yeah, but that was against Cubs pitching People never seem to look at that side of "Oh, well he hits well in Wrigley".
  23. I'ts been stated in numerous threads. I've done the number crunching before, and don't want to repeat it again. Soriano's splits at leadoff for his career dwarf his splits at 3, 4, or 5 in the lineup. It's not even close. It the guy had his worst years in Texas surrounded by Texiera and Blalock in a power lineup in a hitter's ballpark, but had his best year ever leading off in Washington, surrounded by a lot of duds in the worst hitter's park in baseball, I would not even consider Soriano as anything but a leadoff hitter. He defies convention and the best coaching move is to ignore convention in his case. Put him where he will produce based on a history of production, not where he is supposed to produce but has come up short in over 1000 ABs sample size for his career. Fair enough. I'll take your word for it.
  24. My cat both likes and plays with me. He loves for me to dangle one of his toys near him so he can pounce and attack it. Of course, he's a 6-month-old kitten, so he thinks everything in the house (the couch, the dog, my arm) is meant to be attacked.
