I'd be really surprised if Hendry doesn't up the ante enough to get him. He fills 2 big needs for this team, this is a thin year for FA's, and I think Hendry is under A LOT of pressure to produce this year. We may overspend (arguably we already are) but I think he will be here next year.

If Furcal opts out on Chicago, does Nomar enter into Hendry's Plan B options? I know Lugo has been mentioned quite often here, but I would just assume see Ronnie instead of Lugo.

Sounds like all the final offers are in.

Nah, I'm sure the agent would be apposed to getting a higher offer at the last minute. cha ching

edit: I'm sure he WOULD NOT be opposed.

Yes but lugo is also ATL's plan B.

I think it's really a two team race. I can't see him going to LA.

GO DODGERS!

Absolutely agree. Think about this folks: 5 years and $45M for a guy, who has never achieved an OPS over .795, and who's OBP has not been above .352 in the last 4 seasons. This is just not smart.

He most certianly does not fill any need.

Walker can lead off just fine

Cedeno can cover SS just fine

The Cubs current needs:

1. OBP

2. OBP

3. RF

4. OBP

5. Left handed bat

6. Someone to tell Hendry to release Macias

7. CF

There is no way anyone can convicne me that Furcal is a 10 million dollars worth of upgrade over Cedeno (who BTW, is having a fantastic season in Winter ball) or a 7.5 million dollar upgrade over Neifi.

Help me to understand, how is Furcal that good?

Yeah, but think about what happens if we don't sign him: Hendry will very likely give FL what they want in overpaying for a one year rental in Pierre.

I'd rather pay Furcal his money.

That is true, but I would almost pay the extra 2 or 3 million to keep Neifi off the field.

You know, Hendry's comments about Nomar's finding a better fit somewhere else and Nomar's injuries twice in a row might extinguish that idea. But stranger things have happened.

Ronny at shortstop.

Trade for the biggest RF bat you can possibly get, throw all the trade chips at him. I'm thinking Abreu-size.

Walker at 2B.

Plug CF. Bradley when the Dodgers non-tender would do.

Barrett, Lee, Ramirez and Murton to fill it out.

Not to Hijack the thread, but I like how Cedeno overcame his slow start in the winter league and has gone on to play well. Show's a little mental toughness and resiliancy to bounce back the way he has.

Back to subject: Is he worth $10 mil more than RonnyC? Heck no, not even close. Is he worth $7.5 more than Neifi? Sounds like you're trying to start something there...

I just Abreu-sized my lunch order and I'm regretting it.

But I don't think the Cubs would regret doing the same. So long as they don't trade Pie. He is the only guy that could make the Cubs regret trading him away for someone like Abreu.

Has anyone else reported this?

Is anyone else worried about who Hendry will pursue as a leadoff man if Furcal doesn't sign with us, whether he's overpaid or not?

I fully endorse this idea even if it means the Cubs have to trade Pinto and Pie to get Abreu. Abreu actually fills two needs for this team.

He's a SS who hits leadoff. There aren't many of those who have an OPS above .800. It's basically Derek Jeter and ... Derek Jeter.[/b]

Pie and Pinto won't get it done. They're going to want Prior or Zambrano.
