I read on mlbtraderumors.com and heard mentioned for a very short time on the score this morning that the Cubs and Dodgers are talking about a swap that would bring us Milton Bradley and Derek Lowe. I think this would be a great trade for us. I dont know who we would give up but as long as its no one outstanding (which I doubt it would be) I think this would be a great deal.

Depends on what we give up, of course. But I like Lowe. And I'd love to have Bradley.

I wish it would have given a rumor on an offer or a logical offer though other than saying we have interest.

Yesterday I posted that I'd trade Hill and Patterson for those two, and I think the Dodgers might take that. They free up a bunch of money in Lowe, and get a cheap, LH, rotation replacement in Hill, whose FB tendencies will be helped some by Chavez Ravine. They also get a similar cost, talented CF to replace Bradley, who they apparently really want to get rid of.

I'd trade Hill, Patterson, and any non-Pie/Guzman prospect for those 2.

Make this deal Jim, and I up the offseason grade from D+ to A-. Of all the teams to rob, I didn't think we'd get a shot at robbing LA.

What if he traded for Lowe and Bradley and then turned around traded Zambrano for Abreu?

As I asked on the Zambrano/Abreu thread, why not turn around and trade Lowe and a prospect for Abreu?

That'd be fine too. I'm fine with taking on Lowe and keeping him or spinning him.

Ehh....

That makes sense. But I'd rather give up a package including Pie than Z. Of course I'm biased.

Oh I agree, that would be much better. But I just wonder if users around here would still be happy if we traded for Lowe as a way to make up the loss of Zambrano.

Would Gillick see Lowe as a top of the rotation guy that he is looking for?

So if the Cubs pick up Lowe and Wood can pitch this season:

Zambrano

Prior

Wood

Lowe

Maddux

Dempster

Eyre

Howry

Williamson

Rusch

Wuertz/Ohman/Wellemeyer/Novoa/Williams/Hill

Who am I forgetting?

Derek Lowe is a decent pitcher with a bad contract: he has $28.5m coming to him over the next three years. The Cubs may as a result be able to acquire him and Bradley relatively cheaply in terms of players, but they're not then going to be able to flip Lowe with a prospect for Abreu, unless they're eating a ridiculous amount of salary, or the prospect is called Felix.

I don't know about that. I'd like to get Bradley but I'm not nearly as high on Lowe. He's still got $28.5 million owed to him over the next three years and I'm not sure I like him at that price. Since becoming a starter Lowe has consistently put up FIERAs around 4.25. (Except his first year as a starter in Boston, that is, when he was able to carry over his success as a reliever.) His K rate is pathetic (5.3 K/9 over the past four years) though he has good (but not outstanding) control. He also gives up a lot of HR for a guy who is supposedly a ground ball pitcher.

I'd rather see what it would take to get Bradley and only Bradley. If the Dodgers insist on packaging Lowe, I'd insist that he come extremely cheaply. (Either by little to no prospect cost or by the Dodgers picking up a sizeable chunk of his remaining contract.)

So Pie + relatively cheap cost of acquiring Bradley/Lowe nets us Bradley and Abreu? I'd do it.

Lowe's performance is pretty dependent on the defense. His BABIP fluctuates quite a bit. Hopefully Aramis is working on his D this offseason.

Hopefully we get Furcal as well. I guess having Lowe would give Baker an excuse to platoon Neifi/Cedeno at 2nd.

This is the first time in a long time that I actually want the weekend to be over with fast. Can't wait for the winter meetings. There seems to be a lot more buzz this year than last.

Lowe's contract is not bad, in fact I would say it's avg to good.

8-9 million a year for Lowe is looking like market price or a little bit lower these days. I think if we flipped him to Philly we would not have to eat any contract because Abreu makes a lot as well

Especially compared to what the market is dictating this year. he's making 5M more than Kris Benson correct? i think it's a decent contract. Wood is goinng to make 11.5M this year.
