Apparently, dude grew up a Cards fan in Arkansas. It apprears that the Cards are hoping the mullet memories are so strong, he'll take a little less to be a hillbilly again.

The Cardinals officially have placed themselves in contention for free-agent pitcher A.J. Burnett by breaking precedent with a four-year offer worth almost $10 million per season, sources confirmed Thursday night.

 

Burnett, the centerpiece of the Cardinals' offseason planning so far, is considered the most attractive talent within a relatively thin free-agent pool. The Arkansas native is expected to decide among several offers before Major League Baseball's winter meetings convene Monday in Dallas.

 

If the Cards expect that Monday "deadline" to be a promise, they're really, really dumb. Setting a deadline the day Winter Meetings begin is a pretty obvious negotiation move.

When a native Chicagoan wants to play for the Cubs it's called "coming home." When an Arkansan wants to play for the Cards (Arkansas is historically a Cardinal state) it' called wanting to be a "hill billy."

St Louis and Arkansas also feature the lowest ratio of dentists per capita in the US. I point this out because I care about the poor little meth-addled hillbilly Cardinal fans, I really do. I don't think they've done anything so far. Cal Eldred retired and they declined the option on Larry Walker. Those are the only two things I see on their mlb transactions page.
