It just seems to me that Hendry is always a day late and pays too much for past production. Who was the last Cub off the bench that was an effective sub/pinch hitter?

Randel "I never saw a pitch I didn't like" Simon.

Man I loved him. He would swing at anything...and make contact.

He was a guy Hendry traded for and he was a decent pinch hitter. I wish Hendry could figure out how to get a quality bench guy via the free agent route.

Maybe we can coax Glenallen Hill out of retirement.

Damn, but I miss him.

Me too. I saw him play here in Syracuse when he was just starting out for the Jays.

While I'm worried about Baker screwing Murton out of playing time by using Mabry, I'd much rather have Baker mis-using Mabry than Baker mis-using Macias. I guess that's progress.

If nothing else changes, we know these will be four of the bench guys:

Mabry (L)

Hairston ®

Blanco ®

Perez (S)

I wouldn't write Hairston's name in ink just yet.

I get that feeling as well. I think he'd be a good utility man. But Dusty hated him, and it's possible they would let him walk.

Any chance he gets traded rather than non-tendered?

Imagine Hairston being let go and Macias re-signed? This would peeve me off royally.

To heck with chemistry I want to field the best team possible.

I think there is a remote possibility he could be the opening day CF for the Cubs next year

I think so. But I don't know how much value he has after this past year.

I also think it is not a good idea to publically out a guy for missing signs like Dusty did last year. It all but says he will not be back. But hey, that's our Cubs.

if the cubs dont get pierre or furcal, perhaps there will be a gathright/jhjr platoon ito lead off & play cf? i dont see why baker hated (if indeed he did). he was better on the bases than alou who was another one of bakers favorites. then again, i think stevie wonder would be a better baserunner than moses.

I don't know how the Cubs really feel about Hairston, but I don't want him back next season because he's going to get $2-$2.5.

Wave goodbye to him.

Even with his crappy offensive number he still had around a .340 OBP which is about 60 points higher than Neifi, and JH just gave him 2.5 mil/yr. I would have much rather had Hairston as the main backup to second base than Perez.

Fair enough, but each move should be evaluated and considered on its own and not compared against some other foolish move.

Hairston won't be worth the money he gets.

Trade him, if you can.

I think Hairston at 2-2.5 is slightly overpaid, but not by much. And I'd keep him. I do not see the Cubs finding a better bench player. He offers solid backup ability for 2nd, as well as the ability to start a few games in the OF and get on base a little.
