With Baldeli locked up, there's rumblings that Gathright could be available.

No fewer than nine teams have expressed interest in Gathright since the end of the season. Rarely does a day go by when Rays executive vice president Andrew Friedman does not have a conversation about Gathright, whose speed makes him a potentially valuable commodity.

I wonder if the Cubs are among those teams interested in Gathright. :-k

He is very very fast.

Yes, he is. Dude got on base 68 times in 78 games and stole 20 bases in 25 attempts. He's fast.

But its not like he is 21 anymore. He'll be 25 in April and has just 95 games in the big leagues. He has yet to translate his great OBP numbers from the minors to the majors (.316 career OBP), but that number will likely improve. What won't improve is his weak arm in CF.

Unless he can be had on the cheap, I think the Cubs can do better.

The Cubs have talked about Juan Pierre, who I consider have the weakest arm in pro baseball, PERIOD. I would trade for Gauthright before Pierre, who I do like.

To quote BP:

"Pure speed unadulterated by any talent."

That being said he could be a decent fifth outfielder, but I wouldn't want him to start for the Cubs.

he's my CFer in MVP 2005, and a pretty good one, too.

That is hilarious! Baldeli is my CFer and Harvey is in right. Caberra is in LF. I traded him for Wood in 2007. Pie is my 4th OFer.

Which one is Ryan Harvey in the game?

I made him because I am God in my fantasy PS2 world. And I saw to it that he was good. :sunny:

Gathright could be a decent leadoff man with a couple years of refinement (note the key word "could"). He's got a long ways to go, and I don't want him growing up and taking his lumps under Dusty.

Vance,

Acccording to this article, the Cubs indeed have expressed interest.

"The most advanced talks apparently concern centerfielder Joey Gathright, who it is believed has drawn interest from 10 teams, including the Dodgers, Marlins, White Sox, Cubs, Angels and Giants;"

The next good scoop that Damian Cristodero has will be his first. The insight on this board is way better than any article he has written. He used to be the hockey beat writer but they moved him to baseball during the strike.

I don't see any positive effects of acquiring Joey Gathright. His only value is as a late inning steal specialist and the Cubs are not at the point now where the only championship piece missing is Dave Roberts redux.
