So Cubs.com said Scott Moore was added to the 40-man roster but the updated roster never included him. We also know that with him on the roster we would have been at 41... It turns out the updated 40-man roster does not include Moore (so we're at 40) and minor league rosters are now frozen. I'm assuming if Moore was added and someone else released, we'd know that by now. So was it a mistake? Did they try to submit a 41-man roster and then once reviewed they had to drop someone from the list? What's the deal? Moore will apparently now be eligible for the draft but I doubt there's much concern in him being drafted.

Is Kerry Wood on the 60-day DL? If he is he doesn't count against the 40-man.

There is some question as to when the 60-day DL has to be cleared out. You can't keep players on the 60-day DL all offseason, I don't believe.

Some have suggested that last Saturday was the deadline for clearing it out (deadline for filing reserve lists - "freezing minor league rosters").

Others have suggested that the deadline for clearing it out is December 20th (deadline for tendering contracts).

Unfortunately. no one knows.

Jeff - I know all players must be activated from the DL at least before the Rule 5 draft ruling out the Dec.20th suggestion and meaning Moore isn't keeping a spot warm for Wood's return after the Rule 5. I'm pretty confident the date is the same as the 40-man roster deadline on November 19th... it seems unless there was a mistake in the reportedly updated roster, Moore will not be on the 40-man for the Rule 5 draft. Please let us know if you hear back.

A trusted source tells me that the Cubs roster currently stands at 40.

Scott Moore and Kerry Wood are both included.

Scott Eyre has not yet been officially added to the roster. Evidently, they'll have to add him to the roster within the next few days and, at that time, someone currently on will have to come off.

yeah, i had kinda wondered about that, which is why I asked you if you'd counted Eyre earlier.

So, then either there's a trade-a'comin, or someone is getting released/non tendered.

Good work, JeffH

If someone is going to be released/nontendered, why wouldn't they have been already, before the 40 man freeze for the rule 5 draft?

I think this reeks of upcoming trade.

How much can we trust this source? I mean, is this speculation or are you confident it's fact? What is the time period they have before they have to add Eyre?

I am confident that, if you knew who the source was, you would trust him.

Whoever your source is, I'm sure he's better than mine. Wait, I don't know anybody...

I've checked into this myself, and JeffH is right. All of the formalities and paperwork of adding Eyre to the 40-man should be taken care of any time now.

Then we really have to wonder who's getting non tendered.

What a nice Thanksgiving treat for us long-suffering boobs on this site if the player dumped is Macias! I KNOW I speak for everyone here in saying that this minor move, as viewed by the outside world, would be the subject of much rejoicing, clapping, and slapping of backs right here on the four-letter site.

We'll just ignore that if Macias had simply been dumped one week earlier, Hendry could have protected Brandon Sing or Billy Petrick from the Rule 5 draft.... :-(

Not if he's being replaced by Eyre.
