Miserable Pavano wants to be traded this winter

A person who spoke with Pavano late in the 2005 season said Pavano was "miserable" with the Yankees and that he would like the team to try to trade him this winter. He has not yet asked the Yankees to trade him, and he might not make the request formal, but he might not have to.

A baseball official familiar with the Yankees' off-season plans said the team would listen to offers for Pavano and would consider dealing him if presented with a good enough trade offer. The official also said, however, that it was "not a front-burner issue."

Any interest if the Yanks eat a bunch of his contract?

If the Yankees trade Pavano my bet is it will be to either the Nationals or the Mariners. It is just a hunch though. I don't think the Cubs would have anything more than passive interest in him. It wouldn't make sense for us to go after anotehr injury prone pitcher. We need someone who will make 30-35 starts and about 220 innings.

Pavano is a 4th or 5th starter and if we do make a move in starting pitching this offseason (which I expect) it will be for a #2 or #3 type pitcher (like Zito or Burnett). We've already got a logjam near the bottom with rusch, williams, an aging maddux, and a less than 100% wood. Why add an overpriced Pavano?

Our medical staff is already busy with Wood and Prior. No thanks.

With Prior really? I guess if you anticipate freak injuries that statement would be true.

yeah, i guess coming back and finishing a season in which a line drive broke your pitching arm qualifies you as a chronic injury risk.

you mean line drives right on your pitching arm tend to injure it? I never knew!

Yeah, Prior is not injury prone, none of his problems are because his body was breaking down (see: Wood, Kerry).

Except for his Achellies and elbow that sidelined him for the beginning of 2004. Not that I think that makes him injury prone. I think it makes the manager not a good one and the pitching coach neglectfull, but I digress.

Prior's Achille's injury which supposedly flared up in late 03, lasted through 04, turned into elbow problems, and subsequently cost him most of spring training 05 would be the bigger issue. Prior did not seem to be himself after the broken elbow last year. Hopefully, rushing back from the that injury last year did not create any mechanical problems that flare up this year.
