Reported on ESPN 1000 [not confirmed] and found on a Prosportsdailyforum:

Bruce is reporting that a Pierre deal is very, very hot and could happen very, very soon!!! And the Cubs might not have to get rid of a CF (ie. Felix Pie) to get him, either but rather young arms.

That would be good

Did you actually hear it yourself? Forums are often bad sources for trade rumors.

I didn't hear it myself but this "WinWorldSeriesPlease" guy said that Levine sounded confident in saying it. Someone on this board might have heard it. I believe the guy who posted.

I could see Beinfest being interested in Wellemeyer,Mitre & Hill. Not sure it would take all of them to get Pierre, but 2 of them, maybe.

Well, I guess if it is true, we'll know soon. I'm not going to hold my breath though.

Why?

Looking at the link it seems that only the 1 guy heard the report. Nothing on the ESPN or (ugh) Cubs.com boards either. I'm guessing this guy misunderstood what was said.

Someone should just call the ESPN 1000 studio and ask the call screener if Levine reported this. Anyone have the number?

this is BS. i cant imagine any Pierre-to-the-Cubs deal is about to be finalized any minute. i need somebody credible to say they actually heard it. but if its true, Pierre would look great at the top of our order. I then would look hard at re-signing nomar with the idea that cedeno will get full-time responsibilites when nomar goes down. finally i would than sign giles and we'd be pretty much set. call up pie 2 months into the season to replace corey and we're good to go.

OF Pierre

2B walker

1B lee

3B ramirez

OF giles

SS garciaparra

C barrett

OF murton

now that is a sick sick lineup. speed with pierre, high OBP with walker and giles, and good power between lee and aramis.

You don't even have Corey starting. Why would we call up Pie to rot on the bench?

I tried the studio line number but no answer. It said "The Nextel custumer you are trying to reach is unavailable"...are you sure that number is right. I'm sure the office is closed and no one will ever answe the whiner line.

On the other hand, "very soon" is a relative term. It could just mean the Cubs are heavily involved in discussions with the Marlins and that a trade is likely to happen in the next week.

Imminent would imply we should expect an announcement this weekend.

If we indeed trade for Pierre we should sign Nomar for SS and Cedeno as his backup.

i agree with this. We can use the extra money that we would've spent on Furcal to pursue either Giles or one of the 3 starting pitchers.

This would also be nice because of the timing. Furcal and his agent would no longer be able to hold the leadoff hitter need over our heads, possibly bringing his contract demands down to reasonable numbers and years. Combine that with the recent reports of the Yankees not seriously considering him for CF (which always seemed pretty unlikely anyway) and we might be in business with a new top of the lineup for Lee and Aramis!

With Dusty here, don't hold your breath. Neifi will have at least 50 games this year in the 1 or 2 spot, regardless.

Im curious, if we had Pierre in CF and Fucal at SS, do you guys think Hendry (or the fans, for that matter) would let Dusty bat Neifi! in the 2 hole (assuming he's sharing time with Ronny C at 2nd base)? I realize Dusty makes some crazy decisions that make no sense, but wouldn't this just cross the line? Could he possibly get away with this?

No, Dusty would probably hit Neifi fifth.

Dusty got away with Neifi and Macias batting before DLee last season.
