i think it's time to start hoping that the cubs offseason is so comically bad that we can enjoy it perversely, since we sure aren't going to have much fun watching things transpire on a conventional level.

Obviously not, since we are so far into the offseason and so many teams have made moves and Hendry is just screwing up left and right.

Seems to me that are always going to be some people hoping for a bad offseason because they seem to get more enjoyment from ripping mistakes (real or perceived) by Hendry, Baker, etc. than they get when the team is succesful.

Well..so far he screwed up to the left with the Rusch resigning. According to this article he is working on screwing up to the right as well. Wait to see what happens when he gives Macias a 3 year contract with an option. :(

Btw, would you actually like this move? That's what this post seems to be implying.

I think Rusch has been a useful arm for the Cubs the last couple season and that when all is said and done with FA signings around the majors the $3M will look like a reasonable deal. Therefore, I don't agree with your statement that he has "screwed up to the left with the Rusch re-signing".

I don't see Neifi signed yet of for how much so I am not going to criticize him for a move he has not made. If he does sign him and plans for him to be the starting SS or 2B then I will heartily agree that it is a bad move. However, before I get on his case I need to see the whole offseason body of work and not just make knee jerk reactions to rumors from a dubious source.

Well, he made 1 million this year and he thinks he deserves a starting job. That would probably mean that a two year deal would be something like 5-6 million dollars total.

I long for Alex S. Gonzalez.

Pfft. Not me. He can take his .220 average and his double play ball dropping, Game 6 costing ass and stay the hell away.

Aww c'mon man. The homers were nice, eh?

That's the only reason people valued him. He hit a few game-winning homers and all of a sudden he's the second coming.

Never mind the insane amount of k's and the numerous 1-40 slumps.

Come on, people, it could be worse - remember that Rich Aurilia is a FA.

Now there's a Hobson's Choice for you!

personally i would like aurillia...

but not alex s gonzalez douple play screwer( i will never forgive him!!!)

i would love neifi back for the bench!

man but if we could get luis castillo and sign furcal that would be awesome!!

aurilia? vomit.

and neifi on a dusty-managed team, even if signed to be a bench player, will NEVER be a bench player. dusty will find a way to start him 4-5 times a week.

Though I worry about having Neifi! available for Dusty to misuse, I understand Hendry's logic in considering a two-year contract. Imagine the following lineup and starting staff for Opening Day 2006:

Cedeno - 2B

Bradley - CF

Lee - 1B

Giles - RF

Ramirez - 3B

Murton - LF

Barrett - C

Neifi! - SS

Zambrano

Wood

Prior

Maddux

Lowe / Millwood

A very competitive lineup, with an opportunity for E-Patt to develop into a starter by 2008, sliding Cedeno to SS. So by having Neifi!, he's hedged at SS this offseason.

Hmm...that could be a good thing then. I'm assuming that they needed to trade walker to obtain one of those new players then?

Wow. What a thread. It reminds me of that last scene in Resevoir Dogs where everybody shoots each other over nothing because they've all got itchy trigger-fingers when there is a bag of diamonds 20 feet away.

I'll be like Steve Buschemi and will reserve comment as well. You know, until something actually happens.

If you want perez as a bench player you give the village idiot a chance to mess with ronnie so that perez ' can get his at-bats'. Put the peices in ie Furcal, Giles, burnett poss a replacement at 2nd or CF and dont let the inmate run the asylum!!!!

I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean. I don't think it is overreaction but reaction. Yes, it is a rumor. But this is a message board too. A message board's life's blood are rumors. It wouldn't be much fun to read,

"Oh well, I wait and see what happens.",

for five pages, would it?

Its one thing to speculate. Its another thing to trash our team based on stuff that hasn't been confirmed by anyone other than a guy who most agree isn't very reliable.

That said, if JH does sign him to a 2 year deal, trash away. I agree that he's a backup and should only get a one year deal.

Here's hope the Marlins sign Neifi to be their starter.

While the Marlins pursued Conine, agent Eric Goldschmidt said he hasn't heard a word from the team about free agent shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who remains intent on getting a multiyear deal.

Florida might turn to a cheap stopgap for 2006 (a free agent such as Royce Clayton or Neifi Perez) if they're not comfortable assuming Robert Andino will win the job.

Please, please, please, please...

We'll even take Castillo off their hands if they'll sign Neifi.

The fact that anyone in the Cubs organization is even considering bring Neifi back for 2 years, is cause for concern. It is one thing to give the benefit of the doubt to an organization that is known for making smart moves, but we are talking about the Cubs, and Hendry has made a slew of bonehead transactions in the past year.

Again, I haven't seen anything (yet) that leads me to believe this is a "fact".

Why is anyone surprised by this? I thought it was pretty much common knowledge that Hendry lets Dusty put together the bench.

As far as I'm concerned, Dusty can freely choose his nails and timber.

Hendry should be choosing who should wear Cubbie blue next year.

I'd say there is a good chance the Marlins could go after Garciaparra as well.

I would hate to have to root against Nomar for going to the evil, Godless, commie Marlins.

So what is the argument for Neifi Perez being a terrible bench player and having no business on anyone's 25-man roster?

A lot of fans are saying that but no one is making a clear argument as to why they feel that way. Just trying to understand.

I don't think anyone here has really any beef with Neifi being on the team. I think the beef is that he's on the team with Dusty here, therefore will be misused to the detriment of the team.

Either Neifi can be here, or Dusty can be here. He can be a good late-inning defensive backup, and has a little pop in his bat. He'd be a good 25th man on any other team in baseball except for this one.

Who said that? I believe most are saying that dusty can't be trusted to start Cedeno over Neifi, so Neifi wouldn't be just a bench player.

Neifi off the bench is a solid addition to our team (defensively and offensively with limited ABs). neifi starting is an offensive nightmare, especially when dusty throws him in front of lee and ramirez in the lineup.

Wow - a semi-positive remark about Neifi.

I agree with CubsWin; Neifi gets killed around here without basis. Its not his fault that Dusty missuses him or that Nomar's groin tore in half, making him an every day player. He's a limited offensive player who would make a good backup MIFer.

And to further back up CubsWin's point, here is a post from JR re Neifi which appeared today over in the "Neifi / Sabermetrics" thread:
