I would not trade Zambrano for Abreu, at least not unless Philly eats some salary and throws in a prospect. Abreu is productive, but he's paid comensurate with his production. Zambrano is still a value for his production. I'm also not certain this team is better after that trade.

Nope, not Z. I'd trade any of the other guys on the pitching staff, including Prior (depending on the compensation.) Carlos is going to be a horse for about another 15 years

He said in a deal like that Philly would throw in plenty of compensation.

Define "plenty". I'd want them to eat a good portion of his K and give us a pitching prospect. Z is a rare commodity: a young, cheap workhouse who not only eats up 200 innings a year but does so w/ an ERA at or below 3.00. How many of those are around?

If I give up Zambrano, I'd want the Phillies to send Abreu, Padilla, Floyd, and Michaels and pick up some of Abreu's money.

Any idea what Abreu's contract looks like? I'd also be curious to see how many innings Carlos has thrown the past few years. I'd have to think he's thrown quite a few innings, and I wonder if there is more of a chance that he could break down in the future - especially with Dusty running the show. I'm not saying I'd rush off to trade the guy, but I wonder if that should maybe enter the thought process in moving him.

If I could get Michael's, Abreu, and Padilla.....that might be pretty tempting. If Wood and Prior were both completely healthy, I'd be more apt to consider it, but with health concerns on both of them moving into 06' I'd be surprised if the Cubs moved Z.

If the Cubs are trading Zambrano to the Phillies, Utley had better be involved.

Zambrano, Walker, Mitre, and Novoa for Abreu, Utley, and Madson.

I would say that's a little excessive.

I'm sure Jon just shed a tear with just the thought of Z not being on the Cubs. :D

There's no way the Cubs trade Z. Not even up for discussion.

I agree. That's why it's doubtful I'd trade him. If the Phillies would give up that deal, I'd take it.

I hope that is not the case. I would trade Z if I thought it would make the Cubs a better team, and he is my favorite Cub.

Zambrano is the only untouchable starting pitcher in my eyes. Abreu is a great player, don't get me wrong, but I would exhaust every attempt to bring in Giles instead before I even think of a trade that involves someone like Z. Much better to spend money than talent.

In fact, Utley would HAVE to be involved for me to even entertain the thought.

But anyway, i'm not convinced it will take a Zambrano to get Abreu from the Phillies. I'd wager Jerome Williams and Rich Hill would get the conversation started nicely.

That conversation would be a short one.
