This is a different, and eye-popping situation:

Although they're powerless to stop him, the Yankees have warned Alex Rodriguez about the dangers of frequenting illegal city poker clubs , the New York Daily News reports.

It was reported a month ago that Rodriguez had frequented a Chelsea club with professional poker player Phil Hellmuth. Sources told the paper that commissioner Bud Selig was "keeping an eye" on A-Rod and would step in "if necessary." If Rodriguez wants to associate with gamblers on a regular basis, he'll have to do better than 2-for-17 in his next postseason series. Can't afford to make anyone suspicious. Nov. 2 - 4:40 am et

Now for those who don't watch Poker on ESPN, Foxsports, etc, etc.....Phil Helmuth is one of the biggest CRYBABIES in poker, or sports entertainment, period. When he lost to Anne Dukes, his lost it. So, for ARod to assoicate himself with Phil Helmuth, speaks volumes about the character of Alex Rodriguez. And for ARod sake, if he wants to play poker, he needs to do it in legitmate places, not back alley "bars", so to speak.

Lets not get carried away.

lol. arod should be allowed to do whatever he wants in his time, as long as it isn't things expressly forbidden in his contract. it's his life, let him live it.

I wonder if that includes things expressly forbidden by law? :-k

running a stop sign is against the law, but you don't see the yankees following ARod around making sure he obeys all the traffic laws.

Hey I play in a poker tourney with my friends occasionally and it has a $5 buy-in... I guess I'm a criminal as well.

Technically, you are... Congrats. So am I. :-$

ARod isn't breaking the law.

Playing at such clubs is not illegal, though it can be against the law to operate them, the Daily News reported.

And the whole questioning ARod's character because he hangs out with Phil Hellmuth is ridiculous.

He's a grown man, he can play poker if he wants to.

I think the implication is that A-rod may fall under Pete Rose - type suspicion, if he delves too deeply into gambling habits.

NorthsieAvenger,

I don't think it's reasonable at all to question his character. It's just that to some people, pro-athletes gambling is a little bit of a shady proposition. Dangerous territory.

I have no problem with MJ gambling with his golf buddies, but he sure caught a lot of flack for it. I'm guessing the Yanks and MLB don't want the PR hit, more than anything else.

BTW - ARod is a pansy!!!!!11111oneone!!

This post is too drama queen-y

It's a weak story for A-Rod bashers to latch on to and exaggerate the effects on his play from it.

And since I'm an A-Rod basher, I will say this proves him to be a self-centered crybaby loser that doesn't come through in the playoffs.

Eric Karros was commenting on ESPN radio. I thought he made a couple of good points. One was that he didn't see how ESPN talking heads could criticize poker playing since poker playing takes up a lot of ESPN airtime.

One point he made and tied to the steroid scandel well, was that often people look at baseball players and what they do outside of baseball. If a vice is found, then it's a "baseball problem". Karros' point was that no, it's a society problem. Problems in society bleed over into baseball, not the other way around.

Does anyone think that the Yankees may be giving him the "Sammy Treatment" in the press; enough to push an already unhappy fan base to the point of seeing him out the door? There clearly is the "he's not a real Yankee" sentiment among some fans. Is this possibly a way of pushing him out? Not sure what the Yanks would have to gain other than salary relief, though, and they sure can afford to keep him around.

i'd love to have ARod in Chicago. i'd have to burn my "Jeter sucks ARod" t-shirt, but we all have to make sacrifices in life.

You want sacrifices? I'd be willing to trade away Eck's "pesty\table setting\great in the club house" play to get him. Don't talk to me about sacrifices!

You should NEVER burn that shirt, no matter what happens. That's awesome.

I never assisinatned Farnsworth character, cause he doesn't have one. Jenks is a player who deserves ridicule, that will neve change. Patterson, is a kid I ridicule, but never "character assisnated", as I do Bobby Jenks. And I didn't assisinated ARod, that wasn't MY story, I just post a story about ARod. I said it was a "eye-popping" situation, nd for those who think it is "non-story", just remember where there is smoke.....

CubfanNY, I will admit I "character assisinated" ONLY Bobby Jenks. You are just putting words in my mouth with Arod/Farnsy/Patterson. And [-X for trying to make me a bad guy, cause I'm not. And I will question you integrity.
