"There could be further savings if Carl Pavano is moved - a distinct possibility, assuming the Yankees eat part of his contract. There are numerous clubs believed to be interested on the belief that Pavano, like so many others recently, simply couldn't pitch in New York and will thrive again in a less-pressurized situation."

He has about $31M left on his deal for 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Any interest if the Yankees eat part of the contract? Could a change in scenery bring back his 2004 season?

With or without Rusch, I still believe Hendry will address the rotation.

I think Hendry will address the starting pitching as well. Hoops, wasnt Pavano hurt at some point this season? I think he was, but can't remember to what extent.

I'm assuming he was hurt - I think he made only 17-18 starts.

I'm not a big Pavano fan myself. What other overpayed good pitchers are out there that the Cubs could take off a teams hands?

Cuse,

Livan Hernandez or Tom Glavine?

The Mets do seem to be a decent match for the Cubs when it comes to players they want to move. I could see a huge trade between these two teams. One thing I do wonder about is how well Hendry and Minya (sp) communicate. It just seems to me they don't work well with each other when it comes to making a deal....mind you not that I know it's just I feeling I have.

The Nationals seem to need the same things the Cubs do....productive hitters, do you think they could be a good match to trade with the Cubs?

Didn't he post pretty decent numbers in 04 with the fish?

That is just one season. His career numbers tell a much different story. Over his 5 most recent seasons, he has had only one season in which he allowed less than a hit per inning. The ball can bounce your way one season, just look at the White Sox. But the other 4 seasons are pretty telling. His WHIP over that period isn't good. 778 hits plus 177 walks (which isn't bad) in 703 innings over the last 5 years is a WHIP of 1.36. That's not terrible, but its not good either. When you add his injury history to the equation, I say pass.

I'm all for trading for an innings eater like Hernandez or Zito. Either that or I'd like to see Hendry take a run at Millwood.

I'd pass on Pavano. He's never struck me as that great of a pitcher and he's coming off an injury-ridden season.

Yeah, if the Cubs are going to trade/acquire pitching, I want it to be an innings-eather who has been healthy recently.

If the Cubs don't land Giles, they might have to consider taking Milton and a % of his contract to get Dunn. Of course given the winds at Wrigley, he'll have a 50/50 of being helped or hurt by the confines.

No, the Cubs have enough startingpitching.

They NEED to improve the offense and bullpen.

So you're okay with the Cubs going into 2006 with Prior, Z, Wood (if healthy), Maddux, and Rusch/Williams?

I just don't know what we're going to get from Woody and Maddux/Rusch/Williams aren't enough on the back end for me. You can never have enough starting pitching.

The offense should definitely be upgraded as well though. I just think with all the money the Cubs have to spend this offseason that they can afford to get another good starter to make our rotation one of the tops, if not tops, in the NL.

If a team wanting to trade for Dunn is forced to take Milton and any part of his salary, then the Reds better be flexible with the level of talent they expect to get back in the trade. Milton is not good. 40+ homers allowed in each of the past two seasons. Estes only gave up 30 in over 200 innings while pitching for the Rockies in 2004, if that tells you anything.

As much as I'd like for Dunn to be a Cub, I'd like just as much for Milton to not be one.

Good call. And sadly, if the Cubs got him, I could see them trying to explain to us how crucial a lefty in the starting rotation is. The White Sox had one...
