If Manny is really on the blocks, I can see AZ being a good trading partner for Boston. They do have a lot of different options this offseason.

Manny's 10/5 rights really put Boston in a quandary. I don't think Manny wants to go to Arizona. I still think Gammons' 3-way deal rumour of Manny going to Anaheim, a bunch of prospects going from Anaheim to Arizona, and Troy Glaus and a prospect heading to Boston makes a lot of sense.

When do those 10/5 rights kick in?

Ouch. That's going to really, really hamper their efforts. I can't imagine there are too many teams that he'd accept a trade to.

There are two teams if you read between the lines of what his agent has said: Anaheim and Cleveland.

Hmm. Then that 3-way trade makes the most sense for Boston.

Cleveland basically said thanks, but no thanks to Manny. Anaheim looks like his best option.

It's interesting to read people's opinions here about Ronny. It seems like since he's not expected to perform up to his full potential in 2006, we should look elsewhere, ie to Furcal. Unless the Cubs snag Giles and keep their starting pitching healthy (which seems to be two big ifs), I don't think the team will be in a position to contend next year. Given that, I say we let Ronny play and develop and be patient with him. This will also give Murton a chance to develop in the majors and also get some PAs against right-handed pitching. We could then have two solid contributors for 2007, with Pie hopefully being polished enough by then to make a significant contribution. With three players providing offense for little money, we could make a splash in the 2007 FA market (Dunn anyone?) and make a serious run starting then.

Oh wait, our manager doesn't believe in patience and would never let Ronny or Murton develop.

There is absolutely no reason to give up on 2006. As far as mixed emotions on Cedeno, what other emotions could we have?

Neifi got all of Cedeno's playing time.

I have looked at Frucals stats over and over again since Sept and I just dont see paying 10% of our payroll to this guy. Especially since we have other options alot cheaper who will probably give us close to his production. If we had no other options I would endorse this move(like my endorsement means anything). To me SS isnt that big of a hole. CF RF should be top priorities this offseason and if we blow 10 million on a guy who didnt lead his team in runs scored, Had a defensive year out of context with the rest of his career and seems to have a drinking problem.

Actually how good of a lead-off man is he if he didnt even lead his team in runs scored. If Chipper and AJones would have had the same ABs they would have scored more runs also.

Like others this isnt an anti-Frucal post I just dont think he is worht 8-10 million when we have cheaper almost as good solutions

I think I'm with the consensus on this one. I like Furcal, quite a bit actually, but I know he's not worth 8 to 10MM/year. For a slight premium to that amount of money, you can bring in a real difference maker like Giles, or trade for someone like Abreu.

I can understand the hesitation regarding Cedeno, he showed signs of being a nice ballplayer, but the uncertainty is so high. Just like it is with Nomar, where the uncertainty comes from his fragility and likely high pay.

It's all very frustrating to be honest. I just don't see an obvious, slam dunk solution here. So if nothing looks like The Answer, maybe we shouldn't be forking over 10MM in that area.

Bottomline is that I'm really warming to the idea of trading for Lugo--he's more proven than Cedeno, he's almost as good as Furcal (not quite though), and costs half as much money. That might be the best compromise solution.

Then retain Cedeno's option value by keeping him and JHJ for the bench, allowing us to wave good riddance once and for all to Niefury and Gremlin. Wouldn't that be a decent outcome, overall??

What if Nomar cost 4 million or less than another 5 or so in incentives? With Cedeno backing up is that a slam dunk answer.

I honestly would rather take my chances on Cedeno providing good defense and occassional offense and save that $4-9m for landing Giles. I think Nomar is done as an elite player in the league. Maybe as a 3B, but I don't want him as our 3B, and I don't want him as our LF.

If signing Nomar didn't limit our ability to sign Giles, and I knew he'd be open to a sort of utility role where he'd back up SS and 3B when needed, and he cost $4m max, then I'd think otherwise.

There's plenty of money to sign both Furcal and Giles.

It depends on what Hendry decides to do with the bullpen, with the rotation, the bench, and his current players. What if he extends Lee? How much will he set aside if Aramis opts out or if we need to swing a deadline deal?

There should be enough to spend on both, but only if Hendry properly prioritizes the needs on the team. The Rusch contract may be proof that he still will overpay for bench/backup players that aren't worth it.

I don't think signing Rusch to $6 million over 2 years is overpaying. The guy has proven that he can be a decent #5 starter and long reliever. I would bet somewhere in that 2 year period Rusch may be used as trade bait and I'll bet many teams would be interested in a veteran lefty making $3 million who can start and relieve.

I am hoping for Nomar to be signed to play SS and Cedeno to backup SS, 2B, 3B (Nomar moves back to 3B) and Giles for RF. I have heard that Arizona is shopping for a starting catcher and prefer to trade Glaus.

assuming there's really one bullpen spot left up for grabs , possibly a rotation spot, there should be plenty left both for Giles and Furcal if the Cubs payroll is 105 million but I think it will be higher with the new revenue streams the Cubs are bringing in.
