I saw on the 'would you?' thread an idea of trading D Lee for Manny. I must state i am totally opposed to that deal but what could derek bring us in a trade?. Also thinking totally out the box what about moving Nomar to third and packaging Aram and D Lee? Not saying this is a great idea just wandering how much we could improve by doing this. Is this worth exploring??.

They would need at least 3 impact bats in return to justify that deal.

I have no problem selling high, but you actually have to make the team better than it was with those guys.

I think it would be far to difficult to significantly improve this team by trading Lee and Ramirez this offseason. There are two things a team can use to its advantage when making trades, money and talent. If you have a lot of talent, you can trade for a lot of talent. If you have a lot of money, you can also trade for a lot of talent. The Cubs need to use their enormous financial advantage to acquire more talent than the other teams.

I guess i was just putting it out there as we seem to have little to offer in major league ready talent when looking at trades. How opposed would you be to dealing D Lee for a couple of power bats ie Dunn and Griffey and then looking for help in free agency i'll say this very quietly ( konerko??!!). What about a 3 way with both NY teams that lands us Beltran and Matsui H in a sign and trade?.

Baseball doesn't have sign and trades. It would make no sense to even try one.

I'd be amazed if JH hasn't even considered trading D Lee. He is 1 year from free agency, he is our biggest chip in a possible trade and there is help available at first with Thome, Howard or Helton poss available.

Yeah, if you trade Ramirez or Lee, you would have to fill at least 2 holes in return. For the Cubs to be improved in 06, they would have to get much better at another position (SS, 2B, OF) and take a marginal hit at 1B or 3B. I wouldn't trade either unless I got an elite young player (at one of those positions) and had a back pocket move to fill ARam's or Lee's position (i.e. bringing Nomar back cheaply at 3B).

Derrek Lee had a great year, but you have to put his great year into perspective with the rest of his career. Will he have another year like he did last year? Hard to say. If I consider Lee in a trade, I'm going to look at his career averages, which puts him back in the middle of the pack as far as 1b's are concerned.

The other thing that has to be considered is he is only 1 year away from free agency. Would Washington trade 3 quality bats for the 1 year rights to a guy who might leave the next year via free agency? Not hardly.

Because he very well could have another season next season like the one he had this past season, I'd be hard pressed to trade him unless I got something really good in return. But, that single year of free agency will scare off many potential suitors.

A few years back, Arizona traded 6 everyday players for Richie Sexson with one year remaining on his contract. He signed to play with Seattle the next year. Lyle Overbay, Junior Spivey, Craig Counsell, Chad Moeller, Chris Capuano and Jorge De la Rosa.

Arizona got taken to the cleaners on that one. Sexson also missed most of the year with a dislocated shoulder.

I'd trade Lee to Colorado for Helton, but Colorado would have to pick up a lot of Helton's salary. That would provide some salary relief for Colorado while not losing much offensively. The Cubs then have a power lefty bat and don't give up anything defensively. That would make it easier to go after some different right handed bats for corner outfield spots.

Realistically though, all you are doing is replacing 1 productive player for another and getting a guy that's locked in for more years at possibly a cheaper price than what Lee might get in free agency if he has another year like this last one (assuming Colorado picks up much of Helton's contract). We'd probably have to throw a kid or two at 'em to make Colorado pick up salary.

If on were to trade Derrek Lee, we'd have to drop Nomar and Aramis because of their wild throws. If Nomar could throw accurately, I'd say move him to third and trade DLee, Aramis, Walker to the Marlins for Delgado, Lowell, Castillo, and Miguel Cabrera (who could go in right field or take Murton's spot as Murton goes to RF). Then we sign Furcal and pack Lowell off in the proposed dodgers trade to get Bradley. Bullpen still needs fixing, but we now have a solid offensive-defensive IF with an OF that can hit, and Patterson can sit in the minors until he becomes a zen master of the bat. A bit of a stretch, but fun to think about. One can hope, no?

Would this work??

Wash gets

D Lee 1B

C Patt CF

Cubs Get

B Wilkerson OF

J Vidro 2B

J Guillen OF

Nats would do this in a second. But, why would the Cubs want to get worse? Wilkerson is a solid player, but nothing special and coming off an awful year. Vidro is over 30 and doesn't give us much more than Walker. Guillen can self-destruct at any time.

I'm thinking that the Marlins would never move Cabrera for the same reason I do this: =P~ when thinking about him on the Cubbies.

Any deal with Cabrera in it would have to include Zambrano (or Prior) and Pie for the Marlins to consider it.

I highly doubt Lee will ever do any better than he did in 2005.

I'd love it if he proved me wrong, though.
