Dotel filed for free agency, and it doesn't appear that the A's are interested in re-signing him.

"I don't think Oakland is going to call,'' Dotel said by phone from Atlanta, where he is rehabbing his elbow. "They have 15 days to talk to O.D., but they don't even act like they want to call.''

Dotel's agent, Dan Horwits, confirmed that he has not spoken to A's GM Billy Beane about Dotel.

Reports are that he'll be ready by Spring Training.

Dotel said on Thursday he is throwing from a distance of 60 feet already, will move to 75 feet next week and will throw off a mound starting in December. He believes he will be completely healthy in time for spring training.

It's time to make Octavio a nice incentive-laden deal to set-up Dempster.

Wait, he just referred to himself as "O.D." Third person reference, plus stupid nickname.

We need to sign this man.

Williamson was once electric also. How's that worked out so far?

I'll pass on the project pitchers this year. People knock Hendry for taking on too many injury risks and poor management, so why repeat this mistake?

I don't think it's a mistake to take chances on guys like that with creative contracts (Dempster). It's a mistake when you rely so heavily on guys with recent injuries, and don't have a decent backup plan.

This is a contradiction to your other notion that Hendry is directly responsible for not improving the Chiacgo Cubs in 2004 and 2005 partially because of signing too many high-risk injury contracts, isn't it?

No, it's not. Guaranteeing small money is not high-risk.

It may not be high risk financially, but guaranteeing a roster spot to someone who is an injury risk at the expense of someone you can count on for a year in a position where you are currently lacking when you're hoping to compete is a big risk to take.

The bullpen is a different animal in that sense. The players that Dotel would be taking the place of aren't that spectacular, and they can wait to see if he pans out in AAA.

Do you think he'd accept as a non-roster invite?

No way, he's worth a guaranteed roster spot, and he'll get one in all likelihood.

That's why we won't be able to see if he pans out in AAA.

You misinterpreted what I said. The alternatives to Dotel are fringe prospects that can be in AAA or long relief in wait if Dotel doesn't get his stuff back.

ah, I gotcha. However, that still prevents us from possibly aquiring a solid reliever that could be on the market while we're waiting to find out if Dotel's okay. I don't think we can afford too many more risks this year. From everything Hendry has stated since the Cubs season ended, I think he has become risk-averse when it comes to the injury prone. Time will tell if that is the case.

I have no problem with getting Howry, Eyre/Sauerbeck and OD.

Yes, I will refer to him as OD henceforth.

If he pitches as well as he did in 2003-2004 for us, he could call him King Octavio I, Ruler of the Ultra-Realms, Destroyer of Dragons, Sitteth at the Right Hand of God and I wouldn't give a damn.

The Mets have some interest in Dotel.

The Mets have expressed interest in bringing Octavio Dotel back in a setup role, a person familiar with the discussion said.

The article goes on to say Dotel has begun tossing from 60 feet and expects to be ready by Spring Training. I still hope the Cubs look into him. He'd give us a formidable back-end of the bullpen.

Considering the deals we gave Williamson and DempsterI'm sure Hendry at the very least will be in touch with Dotel's agent.

The Mets are REALLY getting to be annoying.

Agreed.

To those of us who were around in '69, the Mets are a whole lot worse than just annoying. In fact, many of us watch the reruns of the movie "Fail Safe", just to see NY get nuked !!!
