I think Pie would do fine in the majors, but his numbers won't count until the "get the book out on him."

Goony - do you think Pie WILL start at AA next year? Do you think he SHOULD start at AA? I had not really thought about this, but which league is really more difficult for a hitter? It seems that AAA batting statistics seem to be greatly increased over AA statistics. In reality, will a hitter such as Pie learn more at the AA level or the AAA level?

Not Goony, but I'll answer the last part: in terms of the SL and PCL, AA is harder for a hitter. The PCL is littered with hitter's parks at higher elevations. But the pitchers are smarter at AAA too - they know how to change speeds and locations better than their AA counterparts - so it's still a good test.

One positive I see is that Pie's OBP is .50 points higher than his average (or at least it was). If Pie was batting .300, everyone would be raving about the .350 OBP. Certainly, that's not the level of plate discipline I'd like to see from Pie, but it's not bad. Anyone know what Felix's BABIP is?

If he shows some continued improvement here, we could easily see him putting up an on-base percentage that is .60-.80 higher than his average. If you figure he can hit at least .280, you'll be looking at perhaps .340-.360. I'll gladly take that. I grant that he's not there yet, but a slump like this doesn't mean that all is bad for Felix. Or perhaps I'm just seeing the positives, rather than dwelling on the negatives.

Felix went 2-4 last night with a double, a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored. No strikeouts. Edited by Jon

The game isn't updating. It shows Felix 0-1 to start.

But Dusty is apparently managing for Leones del Escogido. Neifi and Enrique Wilson are batting at the top. They are 0-4 so far.

Why are they playing at Yankee stadium?

It's not that. Apparently you haven't seen Enrique's lifetime stats vs. Danny Tamayo.

EDIT: They still show the game in the 4th inning. Maybe it was rained out.

Pie did not have an AB on Saturday night, but went 0-3 with a strikeout Sunday night. Roberto Novoa went .2 IP, giving up 3 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits, a walk, and 2 strikeouts.

They did not play Monday night.

Pie note from BP:

The Cubs’ number one prospect, Felix Pié, is struggling for a second consecutive season. Pie is hitting .209/.250/.319 in 91 at bats playing for Licey. His injured left ankle seems to be OK--Pie is running smoothly and without a noticeable problem--and his range in the outfield has been fine. The main problem is that his issues with the strike zone remain unresolved (4 walks, 19 strikeouts) and his ability to make contact has been affected by this. His athleticism is fun to watch, though, and he’s still young enough to refine his tools. Cubs farm director Oneri Fleita praised Pie’s talents in a brief conversation we had with him.

Also a bit on Valdez:

For the third season in a row the Cubs’ 28 year old Cuban prospect Raul Valdez has been virtually unbeatable, baffling hitters with his curveball, slider and average fastball. Valdez is leading the league in wins and strikeous with 5 and 49, and his 2.54 ERA is the third best. Valdez went 5-2 with a 0.79 ERA last year in 57 innings for the Azucareros. As we’ve explained in previous reports, parts of those numbers are a byproduct of his home stadium, a horrendous hitting environment. But is hard to ignore that Valdez has been a good to great pitcher for three years running in the league.

Glad that Pie is at least healthy.

And I wasn't under the impression that Valdes/Valdez has pitched that much in the Dominican League. Guess I need to pay more attention.

Is Valdez a legitimate prospect? I remember when the Cubs signed him, he had some pretty good numbers during his "career" in Cuba.

His first year wasn't exactly impressive.

And I wasn't sure what they were trying to do with him. They kept on talking about how he could help reinforce the bullpen but he started until August. Then, when the I-Cubs had a major need for starting pitching, he remained in the bullpen for a while.

He was really all over the place and had a big problem with pitch counts. His 73 strikeouts to 39 walks wasn't overly impressive, either. I'd imagine he's going to be one of those players that isn't expected to contribute at all. We'll just have to see how his second season at AAA goes.

Pie hasn't seen any action for a while and is no longer on the "roster of the day." May not mean much, but it appears he might be done playing in the Dominican League.

That's not good for business.

Man, am I glad we're giving him more time with Juan Pierre.

He's done, according to Cubs.com. Not quite the performance most were hoping for. Then again, at least he'll be starting the season in the minors.
