i've heard from several sources that bradley, if traded to the cubs, will refuse to wear a believe bracelet. jim, don't do it! we need clubhouse guys like ned flanders and andy griffith, jim get one of those dudes, andy could bring some of aunt b's pickles to work when we're in a slump, that would cheer us up.

and i know that dusty would make a sweet fishin buddy for opie.

That would be hilarious if there weren't dopes that thought that way about the composition of the team in the front office.

Castillo worries me. Somebody convince me he is going to be a 290/370 healthy 2nd baseman.
This year was the first year in 6 years he has had less than 500 ABs. I'm not worried.

But hip issues on a guy who relies so heavily on speed, has to be a concern.

I'd say your previous point about the Wrigley grass might be more of a worry than his hip. As long as it's not degenerative or anything, hip flexors generally heal.

Small sample size but he did hit .333 (17-51) from 2002-2005 in wrigley.

Too small of a sample for me to get excited.

I totally agree but just thought I would bring some pertinent information to the discussion.

No doubt, it's just so hard to predict how a guy will do given 82 games in a park.

Just curious has Hoops been right in his trade threads in the two years since Choi/Lee?

I believe he said it was speculation and I would assume that GM's talk about different players before actually making a trade.

Perhaps a better question is to ask what rumors have been passed along by the more reliable contacts?

I just think it is worth noting how good of a CF (Offensively) Bradley could be. Take his career line of .269/.350/.426. While none of those numbers exclaim hall of fame, that OPS would have been 5th highest in the National League. I realize he has character flaws, big ones. But that is Dusty's supposed strength. I hope we land Bradley because he has tremendous offensive potential. Also, it would be a very good move for JH, who needs to have a very good offseason, and this type of "buy-low" move would be a great start.

If bradley can get his attitude straight under baker, and concentrate on being productive, then his bat alone will make a difference, add to that castillo and lowe, and the cubs come away looking alot better than we could of expected with most deals.

I fear hendry will not sign giles after this trade though, and go after a "suitable veteran RF", such as hidalgo, and pass up the chance to go after a dunn.

While I would be pleased if these trades went through, I find this scenario less than likely, and I share the concern about Castillo's hip condition. I didn't know about that.

All that said, even improving the top of the order and adding someone like Odalis Perez or Lowe wouldn't mean a whole lot without signing Giles.

These should be the Cubs' priorities. Any of Lofton, Pierre or Bradley would be fine for CF. You can let the Furcal, Cedeno, Walker, Nomar, Lugo et al. merry-go-round work out however. But the Cubs need that high OBP RF bat, they need that 200+ IP starting pitcher workhorse, and they need that shut-em-down 8th inning man. Period.

Defensively, Castillo/Furcal is an enormous upgrade

But defense is not the reason this team didn't win enough games this year.

Not saying you are wrong, but I can think of 3 games off the top of my head that the defense cost us. An improved defense should be one of our concerns, especially up the middle.

Ok, you can name 3 that D cost us. I don't doubt that you can, and I'm sure they were all legit.

However, about 10 come to mind right off the top of my head that lack of timely hitting cost us.

Okay.

Hawkins threw away the comeback line drive. That cost us one.

Macias in CF against the Mets probably cost us the Zambrano Sunday night game, since the Mets ran on his "arm" at every opportunity. And that's aside from his routes to the ball. There's 2.

Perez had a 2 error game in May, I think, that cost us a win.

Barrett's botched rundown in Philly.

There's 3. :P

I'm not racist but I thought ---- blah, blah, blah.

um

what does that even mean? :? it's probably better that i don't know.

team chemistry seems bogus to me. Bradley would be a vast improvement over CPat, and preferable to lofton, IMO. i'd rather have bradley in CF b/c it would mean keeping Pie in the minors for 1-2 years. Pie is all hype so far and has many things to work on.

No, I said you could do it. I didn't doubt that you could.

My point was that the lack of timely hitting cost us more games than lack of defense.

But I know you got my point and were just being a smart aleck. :p

What came first: The winning or the chemistry? Or the Misery or the music?

Take "team chemistry", write it on a kleenex, and blow your nose on it. That's about what it's worth.

The A's championship teams of the 70's would routinely get into fistfights in the locker room before and after games. It didn't seem to affect winning that much.
