Epstein could be a free agent by the end of the month. His contract is up and the Red Sox are apparently low-balling him. If he and Cashman are both looking for new teams to run come November 1 it'll be interesting to see if anybody kicks their GM to the curb to hire one of these guys.

Cashman's name has come up in connection with Washington and Philadelphia already.

hmmm It would be pretty interesting to see what Cashman could do without a 200+ million dollar payroll and an owner that isn't looking over his shoulder 100% of the time.

It's too bad that this FA class of gms isn't coming out next year, when the Trib' is more likely to be taking applications.

Cashman, Wade, Lamar, Epstein...

I'd rather take my chances With Moore of ATL or Arbuckle of Philly, over any of them.

Two things that would intrigue me about Epstein...he was hired when he was 28, didn't have much experience working in the executive world of baseball, and I'm sure that was something he had to overcome. Wherever he would end up next, I'm sure he'd be a better GM than he was at Boston simply for having had a couple of years under his belt now. The second thing that would intrigue me about the Cubs going after him is you know he would change the philosophy throughout the organization to one based on Sabermetrics. My question would be....how far back would a sudden change in philosophy set the organization, and how long would it take to get it fully ingrained throughout the whole organization?

I'll be extremely shocked if Theo isn't back with the Red Sox soon. They aren't stupid and they know where they would be without him - 2 million or so dollars a year is about the cost of a backup infielder - Boston would be insane to let him go.

Looks like the Red Sox and Epstein came to an agreement on a 3-year extension

Theo Epstein's contract expires tonight at midnight, but the 31-year-old general manager won't be looking for a new place to work for at least three more seasons. Epstein and the Red Sox have agreed to an extension of that length, keeping the Brookline native in place as the team's GM through the 2008 season, according to multiple major league sources.

No news conference was scheduled as of last night, but the deal is expected to be announced either today or tomorrow at Fenway Park.

It is believed that Epstein, who made $350,000 last season, ranking him near the bottom of baseball's GM pay scale, will have the chance to make close to what he was seeking ($1.5 million per year). That would position him among baseball's best-compensated general managers.

That was a smart decision by ownership - now it'll be very insteresting to see what Theo does with that team in the offseason. I still think something has to be done very soon with Manny (one way or the other) - He (actually his contract) is the key to all the rest of Boston's decisions and moves they will have to make.

If I was a betting man, I truly believe Manny has long worn out his welcome in Boston (not amongst the fans who for the most part love him, but amongst the ownership and management).
