My current contract with my hosting company runs out on Oct 12th and I caan't get away from this server fast enough. I am looking for alternative hosting companies but I think I've learned my lesson about going with the cheap alternatives - you get what you pay for.

I'm currently looking at a company called Rackspace. They seem to have an excellent reputation in the marketplace and they offer a lot more support service than most companies. Which is a good thing since I'm not a real webmaster and I really can't afford one for the site. For example, after all this time, I still don't know why the site gets the periodic connection error issue or how to stop it. I think these guys could help out with that.

The issue, of course, is cost. I'm looking at a minimum of $400 / month for the server with Rackspace, which is 4x the cost of a "bargain" hosting company. I need to make a decision soon, though, as I want to be able to make the transition as seemlessly as possible for everyone. So I've got a couple questions I'd like to ask everyone:

1) Has anyone had any experience with Rackspace? If so, can you relate whether or not their support is as good as their sales and marketing says it is?

2) Does anyone know of another company that offers managed, dedicated hosting that is less expensive?

3) Does anyone know someone that might want to advertise on NSBB?

I'm looking for answers by mid-day on Monday, so any feedback you can give would be appreciated as soon as possible.

Thanks!

I don't know anyone that has used Rackspace, but from browsing their website they look very professional. You aren't going to find a little mom-and-pop company that is inexpensive that can host this large of a site (which I'm sure you already know that), so I would say it's time to move on up.

Alright...

I'm going to go with the $455/month managed hosting option. I might be crazy to do so, but I hope that gives the site plenty of cushion for the future and will avoid the connection and downtime issues of the past year. I will have to schedule some downtime between now and 10/12 to get everything transferred over.

In the meantime, please support the site by subscribing or clicking!

Thx :D

Hey, Tim. Can you make links to the banners and retail sites on the Premium pages? I forget about it or I would click on it daily. Maybe a small link at the top instead of the big banners? I don't know if its possible, just a thought.

What about one text google ad all the way at the bottom of the page so it doesn't get in the way and never even has to be seen unless someone goes looking for it?

It wouldn't bother me at all, and I'd probably try to click it once a day.

I added it to the site footer code on a trial basis. If any premium members have objections, please feel free to IM me since I recognize that part of what you're paying for is to be ad-free. I'm not certain I feel completely right about this. Perhaps an option would be to set things up for premium members to select whether or not they are willing to see the ads? Or perhaps limit the scope of the ad to just the index page or some such thing?

Thanks!

I have no problem having it either but it seems like it doesn't solve the problem of premium user not having easy access to the ads. I rarely ever scroll to the bottom of the forum index page, and so I still wouldn't think of clicking the ad.

I think its great, Tim. I wouldn't care if you stuck it in between the forums and the listed members on-line. Its unobtrusive enough that it doesn't detract at all from the premium membership.

Since my suggestions are going over so well, perhaps its time for a letter to Mr. Hendry...
