Apparently things are going so well that they will use a wrecking ball.

Busch Stadium will fall to wrecking ball, not implosion

The current Busch Stadium will be demolished using conventional wrecking techniques, rather than explosives, St. Louis Cardinals President Mark Lamping announced late Friday.

Ahrens Contracting and Hunt Construction Group are the firms doing the demolition.

Contractors originally proposed a conventional wrecking ball demolition, the team said in a release, but considered faster implosion to protect the project's schedule. Lamping said in a statement that favorable weather, innovative construction techniques, skilled-trades union workers, and good luck put the project ahead of schedule, allowing a choice in demolition techniques. The team endorsed the decision, he said.

The cost to the team will be about the same, Lamping said. Contractors estimated the entire demolition process would take 90 days, he said, and demolition will begin between the last week of October and the second week of November, depending on the postseason schedule.

"We are very confident that the ballpark will be ready for the home opener next April," Lamping said.

Both methods are safe, he said, but a wrecking ball is preferable to an explosion in a central business district. City officials and neighboring property owners have been briefed on the new demolition plans, according to the release.

"I suspect that a lot of people who work at the police and fire departments will be relieved to hear of this change," Lamping said.

The team's charity raffle to select a person to begin the demolition will continue. The Cardinals will offer refunds to any raffle-ticket purchasers no longer interested, and the Cardinals will make a corresponding donation to the benefiting charities, Lamping said.

I wish IDOT had this luck with their construction jobs. Ahead of schedule? On budget? Wow, what a concept.

what about the people who bought raffle tickets to push the button?

They can get their money back if they want. Or they can stay in the raffle and push the button to release the ball. Not as cool as an explosion, still worth 10 bucks though.

My son will be most disappointed. Although he is a Cards fan, he's been asking me all season if it's time for the big explosion yet.

He's 6, so things that go "BOOM" appeal to him. :)

Any chance we can arrange for the Cardinals and their fans to be in the stadium when the wrecking ball hits?

Its not because he's 6. Its because hes male. I'm 21 and I still like things that go boom. When I leave the office after a bad/long day I always tell them not to call me unless something blows up.

I was hoping that I'd get to push the button...would have felt rather cathertic... Oh well...watching it come down piece by piece for several weeks from my office window will be its own little reward.

It's not too late to take him out to the woods and drop him off and start over.

Define 'save.' If by save you mean not allowing him to see a World Series championship in his lifetime, then by all means save him.
