This isn't the first article I have read noting that Torre may be on the way out of NY.

Would the Cubs be bold enough to fire Dusty and make a play for Torre if in fact the Yankees miss the playoffs and the Cubs finish under .500 (my two prerequisite conditions for the above to happen)?

[edit - changed the title to include Torre's full name in light of the Torii Hunter threads to avoid confusion]

I'm not so sure that I would want Torre. Yes, he has had TREMENDOUS success in New York. But his managing of the Yankees bullpen in the past couple of years hasn't been very good. He wore down Gordon and Sturtze going into September since those two were the only reliable arms he had.

I'm not sure I'd like to see what he does with the Cubs bullpen.

That said, he would definitely bring an air of professionalism to the organization and a thick skin to deal with the media, unlike a certain Cubs manager who shall remain nameless.

Well, let's see. He has Randy Johnson, Gary Sheffield, Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui, Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, Jason Giambi, Jorge Posada, etc.....

and he can't even guide his team to the playoffs, and with similar talent he hasn't won a World Series since 2000?

I'm not sure if he's the answer.

Do you really think the Tribune would eat Baker's salary and then hire someone making more money?

The thing that Torre and Cahman are best at, up until recently at least, is managing Steinbrenner. Torre is the same manager who stunk in St. Louis and stunk in Atlanta. That is not to say he is a terrible manager but he has had lots and lots of talent to work with during his tenure in NY. Torre is loyal to a fault (See Tino Martinez) and has mis-handled his bull pen throughout his time in NY. However, he has had the one constant to save him and that is Mariano Rivera.

I don't think he is the right man for the Cubs. I agree with UK and others, I'd like to see Deiker given a shot.

I should be clear, I am not advocating the Cubs make this move. I am curious as whether it will loom as a legitimate possibility.

Just asking the question doesn't make you a proponent.

All things being considered, upper level management, no matter the business or industry, loves to hire "proven" guys, to the point that underlying faults, luck of the prior successes, or surrounding environmental factors get overlooked.

I don't think it is a stretch to think the Trib would look at Torre as an upgrade.

I agree. I think even Dusty could win a WS with that lineup.

I wonder how Dusty can win without a leadoff hitter, with most of his starters going down to injury, a troubled bullpen, and having to rely on a rookie (like Cano) and aging veterans.... h'mmm looking at this year's Cubs, we can definitely say Dusty would never get the Yanks where Torre has taken them. Dusty would have never trusted Cano, never have managed the bullpen properly, and never gotten the best out of his players. Dusty would have let the NY press crumble his team Steve Stone style in April, let alone through a full season of having to put up with the press and Steinbrenner.

Nevertheless, NY is Torre's last job since he is getting older and has had health issues.
