Barry took BP today at Dodger Stadium and did a bit of running before the game. The rumor is that Barry will be starting tomorrow for the Giants. Mike Krukow/ Duane Kuiper (SF broadcast) and Vin Scully (LA broadcast) both addressed the rumor, saying it was all the talk amongst the press folks at Dodger Stadium, but no one could find confirmation for it. Is a longshot at a division title with a .500 record and getting swept in the divisional series worth risking Bonds' health for next season?

Then again, who am I to stop them?

The flipside of that is Bonds not seeing live pitching for 1 1/2 years, then trying to come back and perform at his expected levels at age 42.

Long shot at the division title? I disagree. They're 5 back with about 10 games against the Padres upcoming (plus games against the pathetic Rockies and Dodgers). I think Barry wants to show he can still productive if he's going to the Angels or Yankees as a DH next year. Something very fishy about all of this - apparently two weeks ago, the Giants had said there was no way he'd be back this year.

The Padres' schedule isn't exactly a month worth of matchups against the NL East, either. They play the Rockies 7 times, the Dodgers 6 times, and the Diamondbacks 3 times.

But just regarding Bonds' value, it seems like a risky move. If he doesn't do that well, he all of the sudden has a "declining skills" tag to go along with his questionable health.

I don't think Bonds cares about his value or declining skills. If he wants to DH next year, I don't think you'll find a team in the AL that wouldn't want him. Deminished skills or not. I think he just wants to get back onto the field. If he doesn't come back now, he'll have to wait 6 more months. That's 6 more months that can be added on to the total of him not facing live pitching. He's not going to be the Bonds of last season. He knows that, and I'm sure most of the baseball world knows that. But even a bad Bonds will help out the team. And what happens if by some chance he comes back and manages to lead them to a miracle playoff birth? Has anyone ever gotten the MVP for less than a month of work? (For the record, I'm just joking about the MVP.)

I hope Prior brushes him back.

That was one of the funniest moments I've seen in baseball. Prior probably would've been killed by Barry if he charged the mound, but he stood his ground anyway.

Prior needs to get that swagger back.

Is there any way to get this video? I didn't get to watch it, and I've been dying to see it.

Agreed. I gained so much respect for him that day. He wasn't trying to hurt Barry, he was trying to establish his zone, and keep Barry from crowding the plate. The fact that he had the guts to do it to possibly the greatest hitter of all time, and then stand his ground about it, was awesome.

Even better was that he went up to Bonds at the all star game and explained why he did it, and said there were no hard feelings.

Bonds won't be activated tonight, but only because he hasn't been cleared to "run the bases."

Or "cleared" to run the bases

*ducks*

Can you be considered that when you call your own ball and strikes?

Why couldn't this thread say:

RUMOR OUT OF CALI: Baker to LA

:(

Unfortunately, given Hendry's tendancy to overpay, his unjustified faith in Baker, and MacPhail's apparant belief that everything is fine, this would probably just result in a contract offer sooner rather than later.

Hey, CR.....

I don't know how long it takes to "un-juice." I haven't finished Canseco's book, which I just purchased and am reading. But, judging by the diminished "neck" and "head" sizes, I would venture a guess that Bonds MIGHT be able to pass the juice test, now.

Of course, don't ask him any questions a la Palmiero. Especially, if they are asked by the DA or a so-called "congressperson."

I will "cry" if Bonds tears an ACL or meniscus or something. I would, actually, lose approximately two minutes of sleep over that.

That is how long it takes me to take a sleeping pill these days.

Notice he's going to come back *after* Zambrano pitches? :)
