Even though I don't want the Cubs to get Manny Ramirez, I've still decided to see what you guys think we'll need to give up to bring him to the North Side. I think we pick up Burnitz' option, send him, Patterson, some minor leaguers, and agree to pay about 3/4 of his contract. Feel free to propose your own deal as well. Once again, though, I don't want him. He's got a Sosa like deal, and a Sosa like attitude.

If they ever thought to trade him for so little (burnitz and patterson with some throw-ins? Come on), it'll be in return for us paying ALL of his salary.

The first step in acquiring Manny will be a willingness to take on all of his contract. Once that occurs, the players can be discussed.

I actually think he could be had for very little as far as players. My perception is that Theo would love to unload him. Jettisoning Manny would make it easier for the Red Sox to keep Damon and look to other needs, like signing Burnett or another pitcher.

Speaking of Manny. I was at a Boston Red Sox bar in Chicago last night, and I was talking to a person who just relocated to Chicago from Boston. We chatted all night, and he said Manny has no interest in playing defense. He said he's horrible! The guy can flat out rake! But he is a hack and lazy in the field. He also said that people in Boston still miss Normar.

At least Sosa tries on defense, it's just that Sosa sucks. Manny's contract is worse than Sosa's, plus he's going to get a no-trade clause when the season is over, or earlier, depending on when Varitek gets his.

Manny's contract his this: receives a NO-TRADE clause if any other Sox player should receive one

Red Sox team policy has this: Red Sox new team policy: A Red Sox player cannot be traded without his consent if he reaches eight years of uninterrupted major league service, all with the Sox. Varitek had 7.020 at the start of the season, so he'll get one soon, which will also give one to Manny. Also, will get the automatic veto as a 10-5 player after this season, his 5th w/ the Red Sox, ends.

But Manny wouldn't have a no-trade clause if he's traded before that occurs. So, if the Cubs acquire him, he doesn't come with a no trade clause. On the other hand, his contract makes him nearly untradeable.

I'd take Manny if the cost was only in dollars of the contract and very little in terms of players. We could get Manny and make very few other changes and I think this team could win next season.

Imagine this line-up:

Lofton CF (until Pie is ready. Lofton could be signed for 1.5 mil likely)

Walker 2B

Lee 1B

M. Ramirez LF

A. Ramirez 3b

Murton RF

Barrett C

Cedeno SS

I think that line-up could score. It's 2-5 is devastating and the bottom three should be solid performers.

Considering what Manny does offensively and what the Cubs need, his contract (3 and 57 mil) isn't too bad. The Cubs will have to give up something though. Jmo but they should trade Wood for Manny. Boston could offer him an extension so he waives his no-trade clause. Might as well get something for Kerry before he gets hurt again and leaves after 2006.

Tek will get his no-trade clause soon, and on Oct. 3, Manny gets his 10-5 rights. Manny will be able to block any deal this winter.

Part of the reason Manny is so good on offense is that he doesn't expend a lot of energy on defense. LF at Fenway is 310. LF at Wrigley is 353. Plus, Manny has the green monster. So on a ball over his head, he doesn't have a lot of running to do, b/c he knows he's got the wall and it wall bounce back to him. The same thing happened w/ Berkman a few years ago. He had to play CF, increasing the amount of work he did on defense, and it hurt his offense. The same thing will probably happen to Manny. He'll probably perform like our Ramirez.

Berkman put up a .290/.400/.588/.987 line during his time at CF during the 2002 season which was actually better than his overall season averages for the same stat lines.

Why let stats get in the way of an argument formed entirely on opinion?

Sorry, I should know that stats don't show the real story.
