Outshined, Daytona is playing a DH today. They're making up for yesterday's postponed game in Brevard County with two in Daytona.

Probable Pitchers:

Iowa: LHP John Koronka (9-10, 4.11 ERA) vs. RHP Josh Karp (2-1, 6.53 ERA)

West Tenn: RHP Ricky Nolasco (13-3, 3.01 ERA)

Daytona (game 1): LHP JR Mathes (10-8, 4.48 ERA) vs. LHP Ryan Costello (6-5, 3.03 ERA)

Daytona (game 2): RHP Sean Gallagher (Peoria: 14-5, 2.71 ERA)

Peoria: RHP Todd Blackford (Danville: 5-3, 3.17 ERA) vs. RHP Koley Kolberg (6-6, 3.42 ERA)

Boise: LHP Jesus Yepez (4-2, 4.07 ERA) vs. RHP Chris Kemlo (4-7, 5.40 ERA)

Sean Gallagher makes his Daytona debut today, while Todd Blackford (who came over in the Todd Hollandsworth trade) makes his Cubs system debut.

Ricky Nolasco needs 11 Ks today (it's his last start of the season) to break Renyel Pinto's Jaxx record for strikeouts in a season.

Go Gallagher! I hope I can get an update in Peoria on how he does. He will end up finishing 3rd in the MWL in ERA. BTW, they're having the Taste of Daytona at the park before the doubleheader.

We'll collaborate on a Blackford report, but I might not be able to post it until Monday night.

ETA: Peoria was eliminated from playoff hopes last night with their loss. Time to just enjoy the remainder of the season. On Monday, they'll be handing out the team awards -- there are 13? of them, including MVP, best teammate ... I'm not sure what else, but some funs ones. :) The front office and the team voted on the awards.

More incentive to shut down the Bay Bears! Nolasco's had a great season .

Nolasco with 4K through 5IP, and he's at about 90 pitches already.

 "I think the only guy that could have done that (the balk call from last night, and how if he was on the rubber he would have blown out his knee) was my stretch armstrong doll from when I was a kid" - Ron

I'ts up to the DJAXX bullpen for 3.0IP with only a 1 run lead, fasten your seatbelts!!!

Peoria is ALL OVER south Bend, 7-0 score. The Chiefs chase the South Bend starter out of the game after 2.1 IP, tagging him for 7 runs

Ron with some nice comments about last night. Apparently he's been getting some e-mails from NSBB users!
I sent him an e-mail only about five minutes before he made a comment about getting several e-mails from NSBB members.

You can put Boise in the loss column as well.

Wow, could you have more divergent outcomes for the two Cubs Rule 5 draftees? Sisco gets kept and does well as a reliever in KC. Hagerty get returned and has the worst season of any Cubs minor leaguer.

Nice going, Gallagher.

Thanks, Bo:

CUBS PLAY SPOILERS IN DOUBLE-HEADER SWEEP

Daytona Took Both Ends of the Double-Dip against Brevard County, and Crushed the Manatees Chance for Post Season Play

By Bo Fulginiti

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla—As the old saying goes: “Misery loves company,” and apparently the same holds true in the Florida State League Eastern Division.

Just one day after the Daytona Cubs were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs after a Vero Beach Dodger loss on Friday night, the Cubs decided to add another friendly foe to list of the post-season deceased.

The Cubs utilized a strong performance from lefty J.R. Mathes and a collection of outstanding pitching efforts from several Daytona newcomers, as the Cubs took both ends of a double-header on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark against the Brevard County Manatees, winning by finals of 4-3 in the first contest and 2-1 in the finale.

The two victories eliminated Brevard County from the Eastern Division race as the Manatees came into the afternoon 1.5 games behind Palm Beach with three to play.

First, it was Mathes (11-8) who made the most of his final regular season start as he went 5.2 innings in the first game and held the Manatee attack to three earned runs, while he struck out three to notch his 11th win of the season.

The Daytona offensive charge was led by both third baseman Scott Moore who went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored, and Brian Dopirak who stoked a two-run homerun to left field in the first inning to set the tone.

Manatees southpaw Ryan Costello (6-6) went he distance going all six innings but was charged with the loss after surrendering four earned runs on five hits.

In the second game of the evening, the Cubs welcomed highly touted prospect Sean Gallagher to Daytona as the righty made his first start since being called up from Low-A Peoria. Gallagher went five strong innings of one-run six-hit ball as he struck out seven in the no-decision.

Gallagher then received bullpen help from two familiar arms, as newcomers Tim Layden (5-4) and Michael Phelps finished the final two innings to nail down the win and the double-header sweep.

Chris Walker stole the show—literally—as he went 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and three stolen bases to raise his league-leading total to 59 with one game left to play.

With the victories the Cubs improved to 34-33 and have gone about the .500 level in winning percentage for the first time in the second half since they were 2-1 on June 22nd.

The final game of the regular season is set for Sunday at “The Jack,” as Daytona will send righty Matt Weber (0-1, 2.70 ERA) to the hill to make his second start, as he goes toe-to-toe with Brevard County Manatee right-hander and local Ormond Beach product Bo Hall (2-3, 4.04 ERA).

First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. EST.

Hagerty get returned and has the worst season of any Cubs minor leaguer.
Hagerty's (and my) alma mater, Ball State, lost to Iowa 56-0 in football today. That score seems rather indicative of the season Hagerty had. :(
