To get ready for the post-season, I'd send up Reyes when the rosters expand and use him to spot start once for Morris and once for Carpenter.

Marquis will be the odd man out for the playoff rotation.

This is how I'd plan the month of Sept. assuming everyone stays healthy as far as the pitchers...

Sept. 9th-Carpenter starts...

2, 3, 4, 5 pitchers follow.

Sept. 14-Reyes spot starts for Carpenter...

2, 3, 4, 5 pitchers follow

Sept. 15th-Morris starts...

3, 4, 5, 1 starters follow

Sept. 20th-(Carpenter returns on 10 days rest)

Sept. 21st-Reyes spot starts for Morris...

3, 4, 5, 1 follow

Sept. 27th-(Morris returns on 11 days rest)

Sept 28th-Reyes starts and pushes Mulder start one game back.

Sept 30th-Mulder starts on 7 days rest and should be limited to 75 pitches.

Oct. 1st-Suppan starts on 6 days rest.

Oct 2nd-Marquis starts the last game of the year...

That is called preparation, LaRussa wishes he had the ability to do that. :)

My unfanness for Marquis still stands. I'm more ticked about today than anything. Pitching a shutout against the worst offensive team and all of a sudden he gets confidence in himself and starts running up those belt high sinkers. It also boosted Tony's confidence enough that he'll probably reevaluate him when all I want to see is him in the pen.

Marquis didn't pitch quite as well as his stat line would indicate. There were two balls hit to the wall off of him that would have been homeruns in pretty much every stadium other than RFK.

Very well thought out, and I agree completely that both Morris and Carpenter would be best served by a skipped start. But I listened to TLR on his call-in show last Sunday morning and he pretty much dismissed out of hand the idea of skipped starts in September due to the several off days the Cards have towards the end of the month. At the very least I hope he severely limits the pitch counts for the starters the last few weeks. The Cards will go as far as the starting pitching takes them, and there is no excuse if one or more of the starters is ineffective or injured going into the playoffs due to overuse.
