Neifi Perez started at shortstop again Monday as Nomar Garciaparra's back continued to bother him. Manager Dusty Baker said it bothers Garciaparra more to run than it does to hit. He doubled twice Sunday in Colorado.

"You have to be really thankful we have Neifi,'' Baker said.

Chances are, the Cubs will re-sign Perez for 2006 and not Garciaparra, whose health issues make him too big of a risk.

Is there an emoticon for vomitting?

I'm real thankful for his .693 OPS.

This has been a highly unsettling and frustrating season, and comments like the one above only make it worse.

And of course, the Bears stink.

I'm sorry, but I think a 50% Nomar can be more effective than a 100% Neifi. It's well worth the risk, especially with Ronny Cedeno as a backup. All I know, is that if both Neifi AND Macias are back next year, I'm gonna.... well, I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. But it's not gonna be pretty.

Atleast he's in the top 10... Of # of swings anyway...

Haven't seen you in a while Too Tall, welcome back.

Words and emoticons can't express my disgust at that quote about Neifi.

Don't be disgusted; listen to Corey: it's just a game.

I would like to see both Neifi and Nomar gone. We sign Nomar to another 8mil and then bam he'll have another injury. He hasnt done squat for us down the stretch. He cant even play effectively for an entire season. We cut our losses let him sign to another team so we can get a 1st rounder and we sign furcal or bring Cedeno up. Done.

I agree if the going rate for Nomar is 8 million, we should pass. But given his injury history and age, I think whatever team that signs him will give him an incentive-laden one-year deal. If the Cubs can structure it correctly signing Nomar and using Cedeno as a backup (to get him some playing time and experience) might work out well for the Cubs.

Nomar isn't as injury riddled as people think. He's had I think only a year and a half of his career where he has been injured. Before last year, he played pretty much every game (except in 2001). I wouldn't dream of giving him another 8 million, but if we can get him cheap, I'd say keep him around. He's a lifetime .320 hitter. Furcal might even cost more than him next year.

Thanks CPatt, switched jobs so I can't be on here as much so I try to keep a low profile, but I keep getting sucked back in :D

Thats a pathetic thing to say but the state of affairs maybe accurate. Neifi is 7th in NL in OPS and .11 behind Eckstein. So really he is just average, not bad for a backup i suppose. No surpise Neifi is last in GIDP with 15. What sucks is where would Cedeno be on that list and not neifi?

I don't really have a problem with Neifi coming back. He's a capable backup should the need arise.

Nomar? That's an entirely different story. The guy is a physical wreck. His offense hasn't been nearly what we had hoped, and his defense is terrible.

I'd much rather see the Cubs keep Perez, dump Garciaparra, and put so much damn money on the table in front of Furcal that he can't say no.

If we want a championship it's time to stop putting our faith in fragile retreads like Garciaparra and sign quality, durable players.

This is shaping up to be a career year for Neifi, and it's not very good. Given his age and history I highly doubt he'll ever put up an OPS near this high again. Next year odds are he goes back to the .570-.600 range. I say if any team wants to gamble on Neifi for 2006 they deserve whatever they get.

Neifi sans April: .256/.281/.363/.644

Compare that to NL SS and he's in front of only Jack Wilson in OBP and only Wilson and Izturis in OPS. That's the real Neifi.

I don't care if he is a lifetime .400 hitter, he hasn't done squat for us. He has been injured his entire time with the Cubs. Enough is enough with these injury prone players.

I don't like Perez, but some of you act as if he was brought here to be an everyday player and not a backup infielder. How about at least showing some level of fairness and compare his numbers to other backup infielders. Or maybe we should've just kept Ramon Martinez, eh?

I will have real problems watching this team if Neifi is our SS again. That can only happen if we load up on high-quality offensive players in the OF, which won't happen. I'd much prefer gambling on Nomar/Cedeno than re-signing Perez.

I don't think people mind having Perez here. They do mind it when he has so many Abs as he does and will play a lot of games no matter what as long as Dusty is manager.

His .281 OBP outside of April is tied for 40th out of 44 SS with 100 PA's. He's bad compared to everyone.

I don't mind having Neifi back as long as he is on the bench where he belongs. That means Hendry has to sign a starting SS who will stay healthy throughout the year. OTOH, Jose Macias should not be anywhere near this organization come April 2006.
