Remlinger gave up a grand slam in the 10th to Craig Monroe, but the Red Sox won anyway.

11 runs in that 10th inning, and this is only the 4th time in MLB history where a team hit a grand slam in extra innings and lost.

The Cubs are responsible for one of those other times, I believe. I think it was 1991, Andre Dawson hit a grand slam in the 10th inning at Pittsburgh and our crappy relief pitching came in the bottom half of the 10th and gave up 5 runs and lost. They showed the game on ESPN a while ago. Can anyone verify this?

Didn't Dawson have another GS during that series as well?

Is that the game you were thinking of. It happened in the ninth, not extras, bu sounds heartbreaking nonetheless.

This was the game. I mean, geez. Dawson hit go-ahead grand slams in two games that series and we still lost both. Now that I'm older, I'd probably smash everything in my room if that happened today.

I was a freshman in college. My buddy and I watched the entire series. It was cold, drab and kind of rainy during every game. I remember us both being stunned following the series. I think the Cubs were, too.

Is that the game you were thinking of. It happened in the ninth, not extras, bu sounds heartbreaking nonetheless.

Damn, I remember watching that game on TV. I was 9, going on 10. I ate, breathed, slept, and ate the Cubs and Andre was my favorite player. I was jumping up and down and running all over the house screaming when Andre hit that grand slam. Then my babysitter walked in and looked at me like I was an idiot. I got sent to my room for throwing things when they blew that game in the 9th. I don't think I've ever been that pissed at the Cubs in my life up until Game 6.

My first Cubs game was somewhere in 1978-1980 against the Mets at Wrigley. The day before the game was rained out but my parents agreed to stay in Chicago overnight and go to the game the next day.

That day I believe it was rain delayed at least twice and then ended up going into extra innings (I think it was a 3-3 tie). The Mets scored 6 runs in the 11th (I think) and the Cubs came back to score 5 - including a PH grand slam by Mike Vail. I do remember also that the last two outs of the game came on balls hit to the wall in left and left center field (I think one was hit by Steve Ontiveros).

I'll have to search around and see if I can find a box score from that game.

That however was another time the Cubs hit a GS in extra innings and lost.

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE

Those games helped me develop a deep, disturbing hatred of all the Pittsburgh teams.

ditto..I was two years older than you, but I remember watching that series on WGN. At the time I was oblivious to the tremendous foreshadowing that was involved.
