There's an article in Strike Zone at rotoworld.com evaluating all of the free agents and possible trade prospects for the off season. Looking at the comments about OF, I think there are some good possibilities. First, this guy predicts that the Cubs will sign Preston Wilson (2yrs./$12 million) and Matt Lawton (2 yrs./$12 million). As for trade candidates, he thinks Payton, Wilkerson, Huff, Mench, Kearns, Catalanotto, Church, and Mackowiak are possible trade candidates. I realize this guy is only speculating, but I see lots of good outfielders on that list of trade candidates.

Just say no to Preston Wilson.

If Mench is available for trading, then I think a deal could be made. As a Ranger fan, I see Mitre and his ground ball stats and I'd love to see him in Arlington. I think the Cubs will have to throw in (a lot) more, but the Rangers do need pitching.

I don't think Mitre would be a problem..........it depends on how much "a lot" more is though.

Has anyone ever looked at mackowiacs numbers. He sucks. He is also the type of player that Dusty would play no matter what.

Here is my order of preference

Mench

Wilkerson

Pie

Murton

Patterson

leave the rest alone especially Preston "I cant believe we would even consider this Twit" Wilson

As a starter he sucks. As a utility player, he's awesome.

I'd love to get Mackowiak as a utility guy. I don't know how much money he would command next year.

I believe in the analysis Matt postulates he goes over 2M, which is a pretty expensive utility man.

And this is why he SHOULDN'T become a Cub. Dusty would overplay Wilson, and he would be sheer suckage. A guy like Preston Wilson is a liability to the team in the hands of Dusty Baker.

EDIT: Sorry, I just realized I not only stated the obvious, but restated what you said earlier in your post.

Millar might be intriguing on a possible 1 year, $3M deal as Rotoworld mentions. However, he's a guy you'd have to look into with possible character issues, home/away splits, etc.

But if we want a guy with a high OBP with limited power (4 HR, 40 RBI so far this season), we might have an equal option in Murton already.

Felix Pie (CF), CPatt (RF), and Matt Murton (LF). I hope that's the outfield of the Cubs next year and the team uses money on reliable relief pitchers, a solid starter, Nomar, etc.

No Damon on this list, even if its for 2-3 years?

or did he sign in the past couple of weeks and I never saw it.

Damon was on the list, but the writer thought he would resign with Boston. Also, his prediction had Damon getting more money and more years than the Cubs want to deal with.

There is no way that those 3 will be the starting OF for the Cubs next year, especially if Baker is still the manager. I'm sure they will go after 1 established OF in a trade or through free agency. Pie will probably spend one more year in the minors. As for Corey, let's hope he gets his act together. I would like to see the Cubs call in Walt Hriniak to work with Patterson and teach him patience at the plate.

Pie isn't ready. Patterson hasn't proven he can hit well enough to be a relaible centerfielder, much less a corner outfielder. If that's our outfield in 2006, we'll be missing the playoffs again.

Unless the infield is Aramis, ARod, Nomar, Lee, and the bullpen has Wagner, Wood, Ryan, Dempster, and the rotation has a healthy Prior, Zambrano, Maddux, Burnett

I think Damon will do the same thing Bernie Williams did in his free agency year...............He'll use the Yankees to get more money out of Boston. If you remember George thought Bernie wanted too much and was willing to let him leave (couldn't let him go to Boston), but when he was told Boston offered 10 Million per..........he offered 12. In my opinion, the Cubs would only be helping to pack Damon's pockets w/ extra Boston money.

I think that Patterson if worked with this summer and used properly next season could be a solid centerfielder. No more wasted time trying to make him a leadoff guy though. Let him stay at a 6-7 hole hitter and he will be fine. His defense is definantly needed. With the poor FA class it looks like we will need to keep Lawton if possible and hope to add another corner OF, Giles would be nice but I think he will command to much money and years for us to try. So we may have to find someone through trade. I dont know if we can get a top tier player Like Dunn or perhaps Huff could be considered top tier. So I wouldnt mind finding a guy like Kearns or Church from Wash. and maybe package together for a 3-4 pitcher like Armas Jr. That way we could fill two holes. Burnett, Giles, Matsui, Damon, etc are not in my opinion realistic options for us. I see all of those players recieving ridiculous contracts. So look for an outfield of Lawton, Patterson, and hopefully a steal from another team.
