He got into the 7th and I knew he was done. He had no control and wasn't finishing his pitches. I think everybody in the stadium knew he was done except Garner.

Garner had that same problem in Game 7 of last year's NLCS (and he had Oswalt AND Lidge in the pen).

what if the cardinals are smart and have carpenter skip a couple starts?

it's best for the team, but that's just weak on carp's part, right? i mean, skipping starts is way worse than coming out an inning early.

any more responses to this?

I don't disagree with your thought in theory, but having played the same five starters all year, they all could use an extra day of rest here and there to be sharp for the postseason. Which is why I advocate a 6 man rotation with Reyes. I'd definitely get Carp an extra day or so when possible and pull him earlier than he has been. LaRussa did that with Morris after 70 or so pitches on Sat. so maybe he's on board.

Carp is there when his team needs him, and will be until the end of the season, barring injury.

The problem with Willis is, anyone who votes based on peripherals etc, is going to go with Clemens over him. And anyone that votes based on win totals will give the edge to Carp because his peripherals are better.

Well, there you go. Complete game for the rocket.

(And 2 Earned Runs gave him the loss).

I hate when pitchers can't hit, a real Cy Young candidate would've gone 3 for 4 and been involved w/3 runs to give his team the W. Since his team was on losing end on the road, he only went 8IP despite getting the CG. :D

Hooray for him. What is that, his first one in two years?

If trends continue, he'll give up 3 or more runs in his next start (happens every time he has to "stretch himself out" into an 8-inning marathon game).

You know, we've all counted him out already, but watch out for Dontrelle Willis. 17 wins, and a 2.67 ERA this late in the season? He could challenge for it if he stays hot.

And, lets not count this out, he has a great nickname and a cute leg-kick move. He's a shoe in for any award the Baseball Writer's of America give out.

And, he has the 5th best ERA in the league. Clemens showed us last year that that's just about where you need to be in order to win the Cy Young Award. Dontrelle has positioned himself well, it seems!

Great sig picture. I really miss "Carnivale".

Anyway, if the criteria applied in 2004 were applied for 2005, Carpenter would win the Cy Young. Clemens won it last year despite trailing Jake Peavy in ERA and Randy Johnson in just about every category, because Clemens went 18-4 and all the writers said "Wow, 18-4, that's cool!". Now in 2005 it appears that whoever wins the ERA title must automatically get the Cy, even though that has never been the determining factor before. One suspects the real rule is "The pitcher who wins the ERA title must win the Cy Young if that pitcher's name is Roger Clemens".

FYI, Carp v. Clemens is scheduled for Sun. Sept. 4th. Probably will have something to do with the CY.

Either way, that'll be one hell of a game to watch. I missed the last one, and that turned out to be a battle. This one should be even better.

It would be hard to outdo the last one. Only one earned run was given up during the game. The outcome was pretty nice as well.

Good outings for both pitchers, yet again. It's amazing that both of these guys are able to keep the pace, without a hiccup.

It looks like Carpenter will be on a pitch limitation for the rest of his starts (good idea!). It'll be interesting to see if this plays a factor, one way or another. He may be even more aggressive than he's been, since he knows that he only has 100 pitches to finish a game. Hopefully it won't have an adverse effect, and he just continues to pitch as he has.

To update:

Clemens has saved 43 runs over an avg. pitcher while Carpenter has saved 32 runs.

Based on what?

Based on PRAA (Pitching Runs Above Average)

OK. Whatever. I assume it's just another way of saying that Clemens' ERA is better than Carpenter's?
