Yes, I'm a newbie so my opinion on this will probably draw some laughs. However, the Cubs have 49 games left and currently sit 6.5 back. They also have 10 games left against Houston, with the final four games of the season in Houston.

I know the Cubs have looked dead and played like it the last week but you can't just give up on the season on August 10th when you are 6.5 back. I know the Cubs need to jump a bunch of teams as well but it can be done. If the Cubs are within 3.5 of the lead on September 1st they will most certainly be alive.

The oh whoa as me attitude that Baker keeps bringing to the park on a daily basis has found it's way into the players heads. I'm not giving up yet and I have to question the players and organizations heart if they are throwing in the towel this soon.

I'm fully aware that this team is a joke right now and have shown no ability to suggest they can turn it around but this is baseball and anything can happen. The 2004 Astros did it and they were in far worse position then the Cubs were. As a matter of fact, I think they fell 7.5 back as late as the 3rd week of August after the Cubs drubbed them in game one of a four game series at Wrigley.

The Astros looked dead and were written off by every media outlet and even their own fans. After that game, we all know what happened.

I might be on a ship by myself here and that's ok but I'm not giving up yet. I refuse to do it and someone should remind the Cubs that they can't give up as well.

I'm frustated, I'm tired of what I see and I'm sick of this team right now.

However, I'm not giving up yet.

Of course the cubs (notice no capital C) cannot give up but something like reality tells me it's all over. The only salvation is their pitching staff and it just is not deep enough. And please do not try to trade some young players to remedy the situation at this late date.

Reality also set in for the 04 Astros fans and the next thing they knew they had their TV sets on for game 7 of the NLCS. I'm not saying it's probable or even realistic to think the Cubs can do it. All I'm saying is that this season has almost 2 months left and if they get on a roll, they have a chance.

I disagree. Our pitching staff has been horrible this year. Actually, everything on the cubs has been horrible. Z, Maddux, Prior, Wood have been busts this year as far as I'm concerned. I was expecting Z, and Prior to have ERAs in the high 2s. That hasn't been the case. Wood in the mid 3s..yeah right, and of course Maddux low 4s would've been nice. That hasn't been the case. What was our strong point for 1.5 years has been avg now.

Yeah, but they made a significant move in getting Beltran and their pitching was good. Overall, their offense was stacked, and they actually had one of the best closers in Lidge.

Beltran helped them but it took nearly a month before he got them going. If Baker wises up ( not likely) he'll put Rusch back in the rotation and send Willams to the bullpen. The pitching hasn't been the problem ( for the most part) with this team, it's been the offense.

If Nomar can get hot he can carry a team. Lee, Ramirez and Burnitz are due to heat up as well. I think Corey is going to shine in the last 2 months and I expect at least one more run from this team. They have followed long losing streaks with pro-longed hot stretches all year.

It's probably too late but there is time left.

*sigh* To be an optimist again. I remember those days.

I'm coming down squarely on the "need a miracle" side of things. What's most disappointing, however, is that nobody is running away with the NL wild card in the last 10 games. Had we not been playing worse than anyone else, we'd have had a chance to make a run.

Records last ten games in the NL wildcard:

Houston 5-5

Washington 4-6

Philadelphia 6-4

Florida 5-5

NY Mets 5-5

Milwaukee 6-4

Chicago Cubs 1-9

And those Mets and Phillies wins are at our expense! A golden opportunity wasted.

Wow, imagine how bad we are.

I think that at the ASB there was a large discussion about what it would take for us to contend in the WC, and I *think* the consensus was that the Cubs would need 2 long winning streaks and no losing streaks longer than 3 games.

We're currently, as you stated, 1-9 in our last 10, including 7 straight losses. I think that our chances of coming back and legitimately contending are....remote.

This team will not make the playoffs if Dusty Baker is the manager past today.

There is simply no way. If he is fired, then I will open up to the possibility that they could turn things around.

I don't see it happening, though.

Right now this is NOT a team.

It's a bunch of players who show up and play on the same side.

Bologna. They got rid of all the malcontents...
