It's still possible, of course, that Lee is a short-term supernova. The buzz in New York suggests the Yankees, who need a cornerstone first baseman, may throw $100 million at Lee after the 2006 season if the Cubs don't sign him to an extension this offseason

I quote the Mariotti article off of the Sun Times.

Um...as much as I'd hate to see Lee leave, if the Yanks throw that much money at him, they can have him. There are incredibly few players of that caliber in the game today worth that kind of money; Lee ain't one of them.

Mariotti's high. They'd throw that 100 million at Tex long before Derrek Lee.

I'd like to see the Cubs throw 100 million at Tex before deciding to keep Lee around.

The buzz in New York always surrounds the possibility of the Yankees getting whoever they want.

Also, this is Jay Mariotti we're quoting here.

Does anyone know how many Yankees came up in the Yankee farm system? I am pretty sure Jeter did, and maybe Posada and Rivera, but I really don't know. It just seems that every year instead of having a new prospect that is going to do good for them they just buy whichever FA had a good season. I know they have the money to do it, and it has been successul for them , but it just seems odd that I never hear about a new promising young player in the orginization.

Recently they have traded away a lot of prospects and spent gobs on FA's. But the cornerstone of those championship teams were all home grown. Jeter, Bernie Williams, Posada, Rivera. Recently you see them keeping their better prospects in Robinson Cano, and Melkie Cabrera

For all we have heard of the Cubs farm system they do not have one homegrown starter position player. Murton even came from the Red Sox organization so other than Cedeno the Cubs have done a poor job on developing position players. I believe that part of that is due to the strategy of drafting so many pitchers and then trading for or signing position players.

The farm serves two purposes...to create future cheap position players, and to develop value that can be used in trades to improve the team. We've done a good job at developing cheap, quality pitchers, and we've used the rest to trade for good players. We developed prospects that brought us DLee, ARam, and Nomar. I won't complain about the system. Every system has its share of busts, we've had ours, but our team is not lacking in talent right now as a result.
